Default 1ST SEMI AUTO

Hello,

I have had a S&W 619 (22 caliber) for a while and have enjoyed it. Now I want a semi auto. It will be used just at the range. Looking at the M&P 9mm pro. It appears to have good reviews.

Now I know this is a Smith forum, that being said, please talk me into the M&P over the Sig 226. I know the Sig is DA/SA. Other then that, convince me the M&P is the better choice.

Thanks

Larry

That's like asking someone else to pick out a wife for you. Both guns are excellent and you wouldn't go wrong with either one.

The Sig has an all steel frame and will run you a little more money. Because the Sig is an all steel frame I theorize it may have a longer life expectancy than the poly framed M&P but that would only matter if you planned on putting hundreds of thousands of rounds threw you pistol.

Best advise I can give you is try both if you can before buying and see which feels more comfortable and points more naturally for you.

I tend to like having the same trigger pull from first shot to last but that is a matter of personal preference.

IF the M&P wears out, you get a new one for free.

Its easier to find mags for Smiths then for Sigs. Most gun stores i know carry M&P, Glock and XD mags. Everything else is just random

Oh and 9mm bullets for the M&P are also easier to find!

Of the three M&P's I have, the 9mm long slide works best as target shooter, and for IDPA games (There are a large number of M&P's used in various pistol games). And of all the pistols I have tried the Springfield Armory XD(m) is the most accurate.

Getting a most accurate endorsement from me requires that I consistently hit a 5x5 inch dueling tree flag at 50 yards. The only other semi-auto pistols I can do that with are typically 1911's with 5 inch barrels.

Others may have completely different ideas, but that's my story, am I'm sticking to it.

Good luck on your quest.

S&W M&P 9c was my first auto pistol, but for me it was an easy choice since I had been carrying S&W revolvers before that.

The P226 has a long double action first shot (unless the user cocks the hammer first). That first double action stroke feels much like a S&W K-frame revolver in double action. In other words, not bad, and easy to hit the target with. However, there is always a risk of an unintended second shot with the Sig, if the user's finger bounces against the trigger in recoil when the pistol reverts to single action. I've seen that a few times at the indoor range. One needs to be aware of that risk. The single action trigger is rather light. But, holstering the Sig is fairly risk free thanks to the double action trigger. (provided the hammer is de-cocked first!!)

The S&W trigger is the same every shot. It is fairly light, with a short stroke. However, I have never had an unespected second shot when firing my Smiths.

Holstering any pistol that has a light, short stroke trigger can be risky if something catches in the trigger when pushing the pistol into the holster. Can you see the gun slide into the holster? Likely not. Holstering "blind" is not at all safe, in my view.

That is why my M&P pistols have the thumb safety option. Less risky when holstering. Then just snick the safety to fire position when securely seated in the holster. The thumb safety is also good for loading and inloading the M&P because it can be placed on during handling. The Sig does not allow that; chambering/clearing a round is done with a touchy single action trigger and the hammer cocked back.

The Sig is a tad heavier, with a thicker grip. The grip sides are rougher than the S&W's. That means less comfort in concealed carry.

Many on this forum do not agree with my opinion. But what works for me is all that I'm concerned about. My ideas may help you be safer.

I have never shot a Sig that I did not like. In fact, I do own P238 380. With that said, my favorite hand gun is my M&P 9mm. Hands down, it is the easiest to shoot and the most accurate of all my handguns. See if you can try each out on a range, and then buy your favorite. Frankly, you really can't go wrong with either.
