Default Shield Misfire

Hello, I am new here and had a quick question. I recently bought a Shield 9mm and have put 250 round through it and have been having a problem with it. I will pull the trigger and here a click - just like a misfire - and wait a few seconds, drop the mag and inspect the round. What I notice is that there is no striker hit at all, the primer will just be blank. This has happen 4 times in my 250 shots. The rest of the time the primer is hit, hard and deep and nothing looks wrong. It wasn't overly oiled or wet at all. Obviously this isn't normal, I've taken the whole thing apart and had a gun smith look at it and he couldn't find anything wrong either. Any one heard of this? Ive never had anything like this so i figured I would ask.

Louis

I have read that excessive carbon deposits in the striker channel can cause this. Many people rarely tear the gun down to removing the striker. Did you or your smith tear it down that far and clean the striker channel.

Seta-Louis,

Any consistency to the event? First round in the magazine, last round, etc. Will the round in a question fire if fed and hit again? Always the same brand/type of ammo used? New or reloads?

Sorry for all the questions, but answers might help others help you more.

Gbolings idea regarding the striker channel could be it, but it "should" not be an issue with less than 300 rounds through the gun,if it was new when you started using it.

Best of luck

I had this issue as well. But it was only in my 8 rnd. Mag. I noticed also that my slide would not lock back with the empty 8 rnd mag in. After looking the mag over I noticed that it was really hard to press down and also noticed that the spring was up against the hole that half way down. I found that there was a small plastic bur hanging off of the Grey mag plate. Cut thst off and then took the mag apart cleaned it and put it back together. Now the spring isn't covering the hole and works flawlessly. Couldn't tell you what caused it but I have filled it up twice and fired it with no more issues.

No this is not normal and it is an issue. If the above suggestions do not work and it happens sporadically, it could be your striker blocker is not rising high enough and sometimes it blocks the striker from hitting the primer. 4 times in 250 rounds is not a lot, but for a SD gun, 1 time is an issue. At a range with hearing protection on, you can not hear the striker release. Next time it happens try pulling the trigger several times to make sure the striker has released. If you still have no primer indentation, call S&W and get it fixed.

Default Shield Miss-fire

I had a Shield 40 that would intermittently misfire. I bought early last year and the very first round I tried to fire miss-fired and it went downhill from there. After trying 200 rounds(in which it happened 10 or more rounds or so) I e-mailed S&W and they said send it back. They supplied the pre-paid shipping. S&W replaced the striker and back it came...same thing. Once again, back to S&W and they replaced the striker again and polished the chamber and back it came...same thing. Before sending it back for the 3rd time I had a conversation with the service rep(don`t remember his name but very nice) and he explained that from their viewpoint the 3rd time back for the same thing put them at make or break time wise. He asked if I wanted another gun (not a Shield) and I told him that I bought the Shield for a very specific purpose and couldn`t think of anything else. My thoughts on this being that comparing a 5 shot revolver (that I already owned) to a 7 shot 40 pistol of higher energy and each of generally equal concealability that I wanted the one that gave me more. He said they would likely buy me out but would investigate more. Well, they sent me back my pistol with a new slide and barrel and it ran great. I probably shot it a 1000 rounds or more with never a problem of any type again. I don`t own it any more as I had a chance to pick up a used Shield with Apex trigger and Trijicons for a good price so I sold the original and love my used one but would have no problem carrying my old one.

One thing: I always felt the striker release...didn`t need to remove my ear muffs to listen.

So that`s my story about miss-fires. John

That's for the response! It's happened with all kinds of ammo both new and reloads. It tends to be the last round of my 8 round clip. The gun was new when I got it.

Yeah my main concern is that it's the gun I carry and need a reliable gun. I'll give that a shot

I'll have to take a look at my mag. It's been the last round of my 8 round clip too. I don't think my gun smith really looked at the mag so that might explain it.

Just the last round of the 8 round mags? No problems with the 7 round mags?

SL,

Sounds like you are getting good responses and ideas. I can't help much as both of my Shield 9's were without issues, 7 or 8 rounds magazines. Not trying to gloat, just a better experience than you are having.

Hope you find a fix.

Default shield misfire

Many times my Shield does not fire on the first round of the magazine. The trigger just clicks, and I have to pull the slide to eject the bullet, then it fires just fine. What could be the cause of this, and how can I prevent it from happening?

Same happened to me with my Shield. 100 rounds with one as you described. Cleaned the striker channel and 700 more rounds put through it with no problems.

Default shield misfire

I just bought the gun, only have put 400 rounds through it, but I am cleaning it this weekend, hopefully that will solve the problem.

This has happened to me a couple of times when I didn't let the trigger reset. If I slow down it hasn't occurred.

It may be a matter of wearing in the slide and barrel hood. Be aware of the slide and make sure it is in full battery before pressing the trigger. High feed lips on a magazine or something else dragging on the slide, which robs momentum, could also cause a slide to not return to full battery.

Thick lubricant (grease) finding it's way inside the firing pin channel can cause light firing pin strikes. When the gunsmith inspected your Shield, what was the firing pin protrusion measurement? Did he measure headspace and was it within acceptable tolerances?

Anything more complex than parts wearing in or lubricant issues would make me want to send the firearm back to the factory for warranty work.

Welcome! Note:around here the correct term is "Mag or Magazine" not clip. Keep contributing...!
