Default Mini Red Dot on a M&P22?

I'm curious if any of you are successfully running a mini reflex sight mounted on the slide of your M&P22?

Reason I am asking is my worry that adding a few ounces to the weight of the slide would cause cycling problems? Or is there plenty of energy there that extra weight wouldn't be an issue? (I'm looking at a C-More STS, which weighs 1.2 ounces, and the Speed Shooter Specialties mount says it's about an ounce.)

I know folks mount MRDS on their 9mm and larger slides all the time, but with the lower energy of 22LR I had concerns.

You could use a mount like this:

Amazon.com: UAG Tactical Precision Machined Aluminum No Gunsmithing Weaver Picatinny Top & Bottom Rail Pistol Handgun Scope Mount for Sights , Lasers , Lights and Accessories Fits Hi - Point Hipoint & FNH USA FNX FNP FNP-45 Five Seven Pistols with Fr

Which won't add weight to the slide. I'd also be concerned about cycling issues with the extra weight.

I've also been researching on how to do this. This is what I have found. Just got an answer back from Grams Engineering who mills the slide for a red dot. They have done M&P's, but not a 22. Should work with a lightweight red dot. Cost quoted was around $250 for the milling. Also got an answer from Bowie Tactical
Concepts', they also mill slides for a red dot. He said not sure if it would work. I'm think this option is out, because of the cost and not sure if it would work. The alternative that I think I will try is a bridge mount, which have been proven to work. These are the two that have been known to fit on the M&P22.
Sig Sauer Bridge Mount - For Railed Pistols
Amazon.com: Mako Universal Picatinny Rail Mount for Pistols: Sports & Outdoors
The reviews for this one look bad until you read them, they say it will not fit most of there guns, except for the M&P22 which it fits like a glove. With these you can put any red dot sight you want. Here is a link to a picture of the sig mount and the Amazon link has a picture of the other one. Just to give you an idea of what it would look like. Any red dot of your choice would work. I am personally looking at the Bushnell trs-25 and the Primary Arms sights, links at bottom.

out of stock right now, but I am on the wait list. Hope some of this info will help you.

Hmm. There is another option less expensive than milling. Speed Shooter Specialties makes a collection of aluminum adapters that fit lots of different sights:
S&W M&P : Welcome to Speed Shooter Specialties

Again though, this option adds even more weight (about an ounce). I'm going to try writing S&W directly to see if they will weigh in.

Good find, I was looking for mounts like these, but couldn't find any for the M&P. The lightweight reflex sights that I found are between 1-3 ounces plus the 1oz for the mount. I curious to hear what S&W has to say. Thanks for the link. I forgot to mention that you could have you slide drilled and tapped for the sight and leave off the mount. The dovetail mount is a better option because if it doesn't work, you are just out the price the mount, which you could easily sell.

I emailed S&W this morning, so we'll see what they say.

I am pretty skeptical that it would cycle well with the added reciprocating mass, especially given that I already have enough ammo-picky issues with this pistol. But, that's totally a guess.

I'm not running one yet, but....I have seen one at my steel league shoot and it ran great! It WILL be my new set up for the 22 class next year. Now for some of what I have learned. You can NOT use a mount for the m&p 9 the dove tail is cut different the mount must be modified or have the slide cut. The guy at the match made his own custom mount and I will be getting one made for my m&p. another thing he did was cut a window in the top of the slide, he said that it will speed the slide up for a faster cycle time. I handled his gun and it is sweet. But I don't think I'll be cutting my slide. He said his ran fine without the window cut but liked the looks of it. One more word of caution do not try to force the m&p 9 mount into the 22 slide its made of aluminum and you will booger it up, better to take your time so a new slide won't be needed! I don't think it will be long till someone comes out with a mount for the 22. In our steel leauge the 22 class is the biggest class and still growing. So much that for next year we will be splitting the class to open and limited. This year the 22 class was if its a 22 pistol no matter the mods you all shot in the same class.

Thanks for the info, sounds like a great gun, do you or can you get any pictures of the gun. Would like to see what the custom mount looks like and what kind of sight he is using. What kind of mount do you plan on using when you build you gun.

Hmm, I am surprised to hear this. I have read of multiple people taking stock rear sights from their higher-caliber M&Ps and putting them on their M&P22. (Note that the stock 9mm rears don't match the stock 22 front blade height, so the elevation will be off.) But, per what I've read they do fit.

I will contact Speed Shooter Specialties to inquire. I also already have an email in to S&W.

One of my local clubs has just started up a monthly 22 action pistol night - really looking forward to trying out this format. (The reflex sight isn't necessary, but I'm very curious.)

I'm going to have my mount made by Jerry Mismer out of reading pa. It's his gun that I saw at the match. My gun won't be ready until the new year. The delta point costs more then the gun and the mount is about 100.00 and change. I also spoke to a S&W tec. Rep. And he said that the dovetail is cut at a different angle. You can make it fit with soma carefull fileing. Oh ya the site is a delta point !

Oh man, I didn't notice that you were in Allentown - I live in Bethlehem. The Hellertown Sportsmen's Assn is the club that is hosting the 22 action pistol league. Second Tuesday of every month (which is this coming Tues).

Let me know what you learn from Mr. Mismer, and I will keep everyone posted on S&W and Speed Shooter Specialties' replies.

I also talked to speed shooters about 4 months ago and their reply was that no one has tried it yet. I'll keep you posted!

Small place ... I'm in Northampton just north of the airport.

I'll be getting an m&p22 for steel plate next year. Shot the last event at guthville this year with my gsg 1911-22. My wife will use that next year since I shoot an m&p9 in idpa and want to be consistent

I checked with Sight Mount and the mount weighs 1/2 ounce. I bought a Browning halo sight to put on a Buck Mark Micro and it a nice lightweight and inexpensive sight. Going to order a mount from Sight Mount and put it on my M&P22. Hope it works.

I have a Fastfire II that I want to mount on M&P 22 but could not find a mount until I read this thread...
Looks like Speed Shooter Specialties has just what I need...

Here's a video I found on Youtube with the setup I want...

I put a C-More STS sight on my M&P 22 using a Mako bridge mount. It works very well. Just the thing for .22 class in steel plates and mini-bowling pins.

I mounted a Sight Mount on my Beretta with a 22 conversion upper and a FF III and it works perfectly. I also have customers running them on 22's with no reported issues what so ever. The biggest advantage is you still have open sights if you want. Sight Mount Home

I was going to install a red dot on my M&P22 for steel challenge, but installed fiber optic sights instead. Let a friend who is the state champ borrow it and he shot the "Smoke and Hope" in the low 1.70's a few times, which he said is almost as fast as his Ruger Paclite with optic. He then went on to shoot the longer distance stages, just as accurately and as fast as with his optic gun. At that point, I decided to train harder to do the same and forget the optic.

On another note, for those who are concerned about optic weight affecting slide function: Would Stingers work better, giving more oomph to the slide? I know from experience that Federal Champion won't reliably push my slide all the way back sometimes, due to what seems to be underpowered rounds and I end up with an empty chamber.

It seems to be a weight to velocity thing... Maybe if you can find the velociters or the segmented hollow points it would run ok...

Hi guys,

I wanted to report the mount from Speed Shooter Specialties worked perfectly. I added a Burris Fastfire mini red dot in addition to my Tactical Solutions suppressor. It's fun!
Ammo is somewhat finicky but with experimentation found CCI to be the most successful.
Still trying to find a reliable subsonic.
Here's a link to me firing it days before I mounted the dot.

Default Milled M&P 22 Slide

I too tried the SSS Burris adaptor with rear dovetail attachment to the M&P 22. It functioned really well after I skeletonized it.

However; the sight height is well above my M&P CORE so, as you can imagine, I struggled finding the dot when switching between guns.

Lucky for us CORE owners the kit comes with multiple Burris adaptors. So I set out to fit the "Type 5" adaptor to the slide of my M&P 22 by milling similar features as the CORE pocket. After some very close measuring and review of critical to function features on the slide I was confident I could make it work. The adaptor hangs halfway over the rear sight dovetail slot ... but I'm okay with that.

My CNC has an 'island' feature that made life easier milling the two CORE posts. The 'Type 5' adaptor is 40 thou thick and I decided to only mill out 30 thou because there is a spring blind hole (part of the absent mag hammer inhibit function I believe) in the 'work zone' on the underside of the slide. Also; I wanted the #6-48 threaded holes to be located in the thick zone of the bolt encapsulation feature. Finally; the new #6-48 threaded holes can't cross the bolt fixing pin.

In summary; The milling work came out perfect. The 'Type 5' adaptor fit just like on the CORE. The blind spring hole did get exposed (only the drill point and it still holds the spring) but that's okay because the adaptor covers the hole anyway. The finished sight height is only 0.1" higher than my CORE 9.
I did call Burris and order longer #6-48 screws because the stock screws only engaged 3 threads.

I finally figured out how to upload my pix.
