Default What If.....?

What would've happend if the the M&P Compact would've came out after the Shield? Would the demand be the same, more, or less for the Compact the way the Shield is now? I have a 9c and love it. I'm curious about the Shield. I know that the Shield and compact are two different guns. I'm just asking this question because more and more I'm seeing that people are comparing the Shield with the Compact and even a lot are choosing the compact over the Shield. When the Shield first came out, a lot of consumers chose the Shield as better than the Compact. I know there are a lot of factors to choose from when buying a firearm and it all comes down to which firearm works for that person. But what would've happend? Is the Shield more hype because everyone wants one to see why all the rage?

I just think a lot of S&W enthusiasts wanted a light, compact pistol from their favorite manufacturer. I also think the same would happen if Glock made a Shield type of firearm.

Personally i dont get the fascination with pocket pistols

The Shield is not really a pocket pistol, but is about as small as one can go and still reliably hit something beyond across the table. Beginners can actually hang on to the gun.
It is much like the Kahr P9/CW9 which cost more.

I really cringe when new shooters, especially women, show up at classes with the"little cute guns" that smacks them with the tiny grip and shoots to who-knows-where. They often have a flinch THIS BIG.

I carry a Kahr P9, but would be as confident with a Shield.
The Compact is just fine if you can handle the short fat grip, but if you're going to put on a fat grip extender, might as well get the FS, IMHO. For me, the grip is what I have trouble concealing, not another inch of barrel.

For me, I prefer having a slightly bulkier gun simply for higher capacity. It also fits my hand more comfortably than the Shield.

The CW9 nib cost $350 at my LGS!

There is magic in the Shield. Last time I did a side by side, I shot the IDPA classifier slightly better/faster with the Shield (and the stubby mag) IWB than I did with a Glock 17 OWB. To me, that's really saying something about how well the Shield shoots.

Yeah the shield is the ultimate IWB carry pistol. No matter what size frame you are, u can conceal it without problems. As for accuracy and ammo size (if that matters). Why have a 9c when my 1911 works way better, lol.

If you have a Shield, i see no point in a 9c (or 1911). And if you have a 9c, i see no point in the Shield. However, if you dont have "either" and you are looking for one. I'd wait out on the Shield, because it's more than worth the wait. No to mention, if u dont like it u can sell it for more than u bought it for, haha.

I have all the 9's from the Shield to the Pro model. All 5 were tack driver's out of the case. If it were opposite and Shield was before the "C", the "C" would be the HOT item right now. It's always the latest,greatest,newest....

I agree that the 9c would be the newest hot item but really when it all shakes out, they're just different beasts and different folks will prefer different guns for their own reasons. I'll bet I would be lured by the siren song of the 9c just as I was to the Shield. And I would think the increased ammo capacity plus the ability to use FS mags plus the same grip and manual of arms would be such a major advantage over the difference in thickness.

I suspect, however, that I'd eventually decide that it actually has very little place in my carry routine. I can pocket carry the shield and IWB it's completely invisible with just a shirt. The same is not true for the 9c or 9fs. To carry either of those I need more substantial cover garments; when faced with the fact that I generally feel like I need the same cover garments for the 9c or the 9fs, I take the fs. I really rarely carry the 9c; it tends to be the gun that friends shoot at the range and would probably be my truck gun if I were able to carry a firearm of any kind anywhere near where I work.

The "hot" guns seem to be the sub-compact guns. A few years ago the .380's sun-compacts were hot. Now the slightly larger 9mm, 40's, and even the XDs 45 acp are hot. I have the Shield 40 and actually do pocket carry, a 6 foot frame and baggy pants or cargo shorts.

The 9c is a better fit for my hand, grip wise, but it would be just a little too big to pocket carry. I have a highly modified Ruger LC9, trigger pull length half that of the stock LC9, and that was easier to pocket carry than my Shield. The stock Shield's trigger is much better than my modified LC9's trigger.

I have modified my Shield's trigger and made the grip larger (length wise from front to rear) to fit my hand size. It is a perfect carry gun, for now. I thought the LC9 was perfect, until the Shields came out.

Ten years down the road the hot weapon will be the Electron XG 300 laser.

I am debating on getting the Shield. I live up in Anchorage Alaska and all the LGS seem to rarely get the Shield in. I carry my M&P 9c IWB and it feels very comfortable to me. I am though wanting to get the Shield because of the thinner grip since its a single stack and that I can carry it more concealed. But then I'm losing carrying ammo. What to do, what to do. LOL

Sharpshooter

Stay with your 9c. If you don't have a carry problem, then stay with the larger gun. You will have a slightly better sized grip and 5+ extra rounds. The Shield was made for easier carry/concealment.

I'd say hold 'em and shoot them if you can. The shield just feels right in my hands while the C feels less comfortable than the FS.

If the C still feels good to you and you don't have any problems carrying it, I totally agree with robkarrob.

I got mine because I am collecting the (all but the 40's), M&P 9 series,45's and the AR15's from the bottom up. Also have the M&P 22,M&P 15-22, "M&P" (style) Co2. Just love shooting and I like the platform. Next are the older M&P wheel guns. I'm an M&P-ohaulic. LOVE the smell of melonite make me feel real AMERICAN.
