Default 9MM Shield Ammo?

I am breaking it in with FMJ ball. Once it's broken in I was thinking of using Speer 124gr+P, Short Barrel Gold Dots for carry. Is +P ok for carry in the shield?
Thanks,
Mike

The manual discourages using +P. I've read that others use it. Probably OK if you don't shoot it regularly with +P. Personally, I won't.

I also see lots of people are using +P ammo which as stated isn't recommended in the manual but doubt it would hurt the gun at all. +P+ ammo is a no no though and a steady diet of +P might make your shield ready to S&W for a tune-up earlier than not using +P. I don't us any +P ammo either and find standard Federal LE 124gr HST are all I need in a SD ammo.

The manual and the S&W website (FAQ section) states ammo manufactured under "SAAMI" specs can be used . Most major commercial ammunition is made to SAAMI specs, which includes +P ammo. Since +P ammo is higher pressure, excessive use of +P ammo could cause faster wear.

I shoot several rounds of +P in my Shield, every trip to the range, just to be used to the extra recoil. It is too expensive to shoot very much. Who knows how many hundreds of rounds would need to be fired to cause excessive wear? And some brands of ammo are much more powerful (ft lbs energy) than others. Remember that S&W stands by all their recent new guns with a lifetime warranty.

Personally, I question the value of +P ammo with a barrel length of this size. I have read more than a couple of articles that suggest very little is gained with +P ammo in the shorter barrels as opposed to the wear and tear on the firearm.

I think what Bob wrote above certainly said it best.

There's nothing wrong with shoooting +P and shooting +p regularly. The gun can handle it. If it were a 1970's Browning Hi-Power I'd so no but ANY modern pistol can handle more +P than the average shooter will ever put through it. Pick a round that hits POA and functions 100% of the time and go with it. My personal choice in my FS M&P's is Federal 9BPLE, which is +P+.
