Default Winchester 9mm White Box

New MP9C 3 weeks ago
3 sessions
First outing 100 rds Speer Lawman-- 25 rds Remington GS
Second outing same as the first
Third 100 rds Winchester White box -- 10 rds Speer +P gold dot

Two observations
1. Noticed prominent muzzle flash with the Winchester

2. Front of the gun was really dirty compared to the first 2 sessions

Is Winchester noted for this
Still have 100 rds left but 200 rds of Fiocchi ordered
How is it for practice ammo compared to Winchesteer

Winchester white box is cheap target ammo. I buy it because it is almost as cheap as buying 100 empty brass cases. I get to shoot it and then reload it.

Winchester White Box is dirty compared to other brands, but fires reliably and has good brass cases for reloading. If it's available and cheap, shoot it!

My wife just picked up a 100 pack of the 9mm Winchester White Box stuff at Walmart for $26. Not a terrible price and shoots well.

I was leery of the Winchester white box 9mm after the less than stellar results I've had with their 22LR, but now I've shot about 500 rds of the 9mm, and it's been great for me. I haven't noticed much muzzle flash with my Shield or Springfield P9C. Federal Champion like Walmart sells gives me quite a bit of muzzle flash. None of the 9mm ammo ever seems very dirty to me. I usually shoot 50-70 rounds on an outing. Then I clean the gun and always think "hey this doesn't really need cleaning." Guess that's cause I'm comparing it to the .22 I've shot 150-175 rounds out of on the same outing.

Winchester has to keep the price down. One way to do so is to use a cheaper powder without flash suppressants. I really don't care whether or not powders are dirty. You have to clean the gun regardless.

same boat here (for both 9 and 22 as well), while some of this ammo may be "dirty" for those who shoot a lot each time; as long as it functions well i'm ok with it. And as i'm learning on my 9c and trying different brands ammo, i'll use what i can get for now.

I handload almost entirely for my firearms but in recent months had the opportunity to shoot WWB .45 ACP and 7.62 (not 9mm sorry). Quite honestly I'm in awe how well it shoots accuracy wise. I don't think a guy could go wrong using WWB for anything that FMJ works for. Might have shown to be a tad dirty but like Michigan Scott said - you have to clean the guns anyway. Good luck!

I think they pack burned up bits of used motor oil in both WWB ammo and UMC branded ammo.

Cheap range rounds = more cleanup. As an alternative you might try, I use PMC 115g FMJ I get for around 26c per round; reliable and accurate but like all cheap ammo, burns a bit dirty. Can't compare to WWB.

At one time, Winchester "white box" was of Israeli manufacture. It was considered OK ammo that left a bunch of soot in and on the weapon. Good, cheap, as a buddy used to say,"Blammo". Just to shoot.
Now, considering the cost and outlandish price of any kind of ammo, I wouldn't want to even speculate where "white box" comes from.
But if it goes bang consistently and it doesn't give function troubles, who cares.
Like MichiganScott says, you need to pull "weapons detail" after you shoot anyway. I always got a kick out of G***k owners who stated "I never clean my weapon, it doesn't need it." Sounds like those Guys never carried a M16 platform in harms way. PM is your friend, trust me. reminds me of the Parks and Wildlife officer who, upon hearing I was a LEO Armorer, asked me to look at her carry weapon. Dept. issue S&W 686 4". Completly locked up due to corrosion and lack of any PM. We drove straight to my shop where I torn it down and cleaned out the old, dried out beeswax(Don't use cleaning kit oils, Guys, it's ****!), reassembled it with CLP, and she was good to go. And when I say locked up, I mean literally locked up. You could not pull the trigger thru, it would not budge. I almost didn't get it open. So yeah, "Never clean it". See how that works for you in the long run.
Opps, sorry, off topic.
If "white box" works, shoot it, and pull PM after. Good to Go!

hopefully just a slight sidetrack here. Is there any of the 'cheaper' fmj ammo out there that would be cleaner to use? From what I've seen as a 9mm newbie lol (50-100 rounds max per my range visits) all function fine and it's not enough shooting to notice how dirty they may be. But if luck falls my way and I can score a decent qty of a given brand, wasn't sure if it would really matter or not. Again only talking basic practice ammo.
thx!

I just purchased some Winchester White box and it was $1.00 more than the Federal red box. In either case I always clean my weapon after firing no matter if it was 5 rounds or 500.

All cheap range ammo burns dirty, some more so than others, so we just live with it. Here's a few online sites I've found reliable and priced right: Home Page <-- new ammo
Ammo For Sale - Bulk Ammunition on Sale <-- new ammo
Ammunition Online at Factory Direct Prices | Freedom Munitions | Handgun Ammo & Rifle Ammo <-- factory reloads
Always wait for a sale.

thanks for info! I've been lucky to find some Fed and WWB at my local WM, as well as Herters at area Cabelas and recently some UMC from Gander Mt w/ free shipping that were all in the .28/round area for cost. Still not the .05 i pay for .22 lol but cheap enough to have some fun/practice time at the range. And all (except WWB, will try that soon but assume it will be ok) ran just fine thru my 9c.

@Ranger just watch GunBot and you will see better prices -- 9mm ammo for example is easily had nowadays for roughly 23-25 cents a round, certainly not 30+

Enjoy
