Default 147 Grain Gold Dots in 9MM Shield?

I have a large stash of 147gr Gold Dots I will probably never use. Would this be a decent carry round for a 9 Shield? I like the Gold Dot 124gr. 9+P Short Barrel for carry in the shield. How would the 147 preform?

They should be fine.

I use Golden Saber 147gr in my H&KP2000sk and in my Glock19.

From what I've seen and read, the 147gr penetrate and expand a little more than the 124gr+P and they don't put extra wear on your firearm like the +P's would.

I was wondering about the 147 in a short barrel pistol.

I had asked the same question a while back and from what I gathered they should be fine.

The barrel length in the H&KP2000sk is 3.26", 147gr should be good to go.

Per the engineers at ATK, the best round in 9mm is the 147 HST+P followed by the 124+P Gold Dot. 3rd is the 124+P HST with the 147 Gold Dot actually in 6th. The standard 124 HST or GD work better than the GD 147.

I have the 124+P Gold Dot, but I concluded that the 147+P HST would be best for me, so that is what I carry. We are splitting hairs at all these fine carry loads. I have a large assortment of ammo, but I wouldn't be unhappy carrying any of them.

I personally like to go heavy in the 9mm and the 147 grn Gold Dot is a good load. The recoil is mild and you have excellent penetration, plus good expansion. I've tried Gold Dots, HSTs and PDX1s thru my Shield and all work great with a slight accuracy edge going to the HSTs.

I use the standard pressure HST 147 gr as my carry load and love the combination of terminal performance and controllability. I agree with the others; all of the loads mentioned above will do the job.

I shoot 147gr Golden Sabres in my Glock 19 and Shield. And they both shoot great. Only thing I will carry in my guns at this time.

Someone asked Mas Ayoob on the GlockTalk GATE Self Defense forum about 147's in short barreled guns.

From what I gather he knows a lot of the working stiffs at the big ammo companies. His answer to the above question was to give a bit of history on 147 gr. 9mm ammo. (Developed for the SEALS by Winchester for use in their MP-5's, etc.) He said that the older 147's like the Black Talon stuff probably wouldn't be his choice for use in a mouse gun, but the modern bonded 147's should work just fine. As I recall the Talon bullet design was made to work at higher velocities.

He quoted an engineer from Speer stating that the 147 Gold Dots work just fine in short barreled pistols. They're designed to work over a broader velocity range than older designs.

I use the GD 147's in my G19, but the GD Short Barrel 124 gr. +P's in my Solo Carry. I'd have to agree with all the comments above about the different brands of 147's. These days the ammo companies have really done their homework.

Bill

Winchester Bonded PDX1 in 9mm+P 124gr seem to be a good choice for short barreled pistols. Muzzle velocity is 1200fps at a energy of 396. Expansion is 1.5 times original size! Not a bad choice IMO.. George

From ammoquest recent testing. The best 147s seem to be HST Ranger T and Winchester defend 147.Gold dots were not as good.Anyway my plan for the shield is stick with Ranger 147T

Most any quality 9mm JHP round is going to work for self defense, don't get hung up on all the You Tube gel tests. Now if you're talking about an offensive rather than a defensive round then there will be some difference. 9mm is deadly in 115/124/147 choose what works best for you and your gun.

I've shot 147gr Hornady in my 9c with no problems so I think you should be fine with the heavier gr.

After watching the AmmoQuest video on youtube a swapped out my 147 grain Gold Dots for 147 grain HST in my Shield.

The Gold Dots struggled to expand from a 3" pistol.

Also the new Gold Dot G2 147 grain failed with flying colors as well in the 3" pistol.

This is out of a glock 19, so a little bit longer barrel. I like the guy who runs this channel though. Pocket guns and gear is good stuff too, but he doesn't have a test for 147 grain gold dots.
