Default First real problem with one of my M&P's!

Today at the range with my fullsize M&P 9mm after putting about 80 rounds through the gun with no flaw what so ever my slide stop felt funny, and on close observation no wonder it felt funny cause it was gone!

Fortunately the range floor in the booths is carpeted and I easily located the broken piece of my slide stop which came off the left hand side of my M&P, the one I use even though there is also one on the right hand side of the gun.

I know that a gun is a mechanical thing and mechanical things break or wear out from time to time there fore the need for gunsmiths and mechanics. Upon close looking this is not just a get a new slide stop and put it in, as it is a part of an assembly so I will probably have to return the gun to Smith & Wesson for repairs or at least the frame that contains the assembly.

Has anyone else had this to happen? Is it an easy do it yourself if the factory sends the required parts, or does it require the factory to do it to keep your warranty intact?

Actually, if you're somewhat mechanically inclined, it IS as simple as getting a replacement part from S&W. Disassembling the pistol and dropping the new one in. Of course, since it broke, S&W can take care of it, but you'll be without your pistol for a while. Just depends on what you want to do and how comfortable you are with watching YouTube videos on taking your pistol apart. It's actually very easy if you get some pin punches and watch the vids.

I do not mind sending my pistol or even just the frame back to Smith&Wesson because I EDC an M&P40 compact plus have a Model 59 plus 2 M&P45's and a Sheild40 and a Full size M&P 40 with an Apex trigger job as well as a Glock 26 subcompact, so I will not be needing it any way, and I might request they send it through the Performance Center at an additional cost to make it a better gun although the Apex trigger and USB might be a better option!

The best part about living in today's world - and there are plenty of bad parts - is that there are things called lifetime warranty, call tags and overnight shipping to Smith & Wesson instead of "railway express."

Send it back, and they will fix it "on their dime." This is a great example of why you always have two of whatever you like - so there is a back up if the first goes down.

Well, there you go. If I had looked at your signature, I'd have guessed as much! Apex trigger is nice, I love mine.

Send it in. They "might" find a cause for it and will also do any upgrades needed. If you are extra nice, they will have your handgun back in no time.

What about the .357? You have a .357 in your signature. Is that just an extra barrel? Maybe you should put .357(b.o) for barrel only.

Not that your post comes across as bragging or anything...

Oh, and you spelled Shield wrong.

No .22 pistols? You wouldn't believe how much fun a guy can have with a .22 pistol! They are the best.

Anyway if the part is replaceable I'd rather do it myself and save the shipping hassle. If it's questionable then send it in, and don't include any magazine with it. Hopefully they'll throw one or two in the return package.

Yes I do have both a compact as well as a fullsize 357 SIG the compact is a Lake Storm and the Fullsize is a Smith & Wesson full size but I do not shoot them often due to cost as far as the 22 I really do not want one of those if I went to something smaller than a 9mm then I would buy an Airsoft to save money but it seems that is not a real defensive or offensive weapon at least in my mind although it might be fun to shoot if that is all you want to do!

My aim is to be prepared with any weapon that I own and to be as accurate and fast as possible to save myself or family members not just putting holes in paper and such!

If you ever get the chance to shoot a .22 pistol give it a go. I think you'll find it can be some of the best shooting you will ever do.

I called this morning and they are sending me a mailer and I will be sending the whole gun including a magazine so they can test fire it! They offered to send me the part but starting this week I will be working 7 10 hour days so will have little time to fool with fixing my own gun, heck it is their weapon so like stated earlier in this thread they might add something of value to it, but I am not counting on it!

That's good. It only pays to get the part from them if you have the tools, time, and knowledge to do the job.

I like all the advise and such in this thread and since this is my first real problem it will be a test of Smith&Wesson Customer Service. So far I am pleased with their response so I will wait and see what happens in this case, who knows it might be quite pleasant!

Default Same thing happened to mine!

I bought my M&P 22 about 8 months ago and have taken it to the range 3-4 times, with probably 600-800 rounds fired. The last time I took it after a few rounds I noticed the slide was staying locked open every round. It was passing the stops which must have broken and flown out, and you could remove the slide from the frame with the takedown lever locked!

Not sure if it could have been a safety issue, so I returned it to the gun store where I bought it. They charged me $25 shipping so this one isn't completely on my dime, and it's still not back yet after a few weeks. I hope this doesn't happen often. As much as I love shooting this 22, I think my Beretta 22's have it beat hands down. I can run hundreds of rounds through them without any jams, this one hasn't functioned 100% even before the slide stop issue.

I think you got hosed. S&W will send you a shipping tag so you pay nothing to return the gun.

Demand your money back.
