I have one of the original P290s and it's been a great gun. I've had a few light strikes but only with the Winchester white box ammo. Federal 115gr ball, 124gr hst and 135gr hydrashok all perform flawlessly. I have never had a problem with the mags or with the slide locking back and my sights are all still good. The trigger might be long but it's very smooth. I also have Ruger LCR .38 and a HK P2000 LEM and have no issues switching between them at the range.

Works for me!

I was curious about the P290 and handled one at the LGS last week. Looked like a quality firearm but the looooong trigger pull was heavy compared to my CM9 and fealt awkward. It felt a tad on the "boxy" side in the grip area. Checked out a Shield last year but just couldn't see it replacing my CM9 for pocket carry or my Sig 45 Ultra for IWB. Also have a 9C for IWB, but that little Ultra is a shooter. May still grab a shield being my LGS has a ton and they are on sale for $399, which is about $150-200 less than the P290.

Ok I gave up on the P290. I got a P938 as a bug to my Shield. Love it. Id be hard pressed to decide between the Shield and the P938. As for the P290 Im going to sell it.

Normally I am a Sig "enthusiast" and have owned several. Currently have a 228 and a 226. I have handled the 290 and have the same complaints others have voiced. Feels like a small sledge. If they put that top on a 228/229 frame, hot diggity. I think my next Sig will be a 227, 1) to complete the set and 2) 10 rds of .45acp in a 226 sized pistol is just what I need. Joe

Bumping this old thread to see if anyone's opinions have changed on the P290RS.

I just purchased one over the weekend to replace a Kel Tec PF9 for concealed carry. At first glance, I thought it was a chunky monkey. But then when comparing it side by side to other firearms, it looks wider than it really is, probably due to it being so short in both height and length.

The trigger pull is long, but smooth, much better than the Kel Tec I was carrying. I also prefer the feel of the P290RS trigger to the Shield.

I have read many say that the P290RS is too heavy for pocket carry, and that they prefer the Shield... The Shield is only 1.5 ounces lighter, and doesn't fit in my pocket nearly as well.

I have only put 100 rounds through mine so far, and I did have one fail to feed and also a light primer strike. I'm not too concerned though, as I was shooting Perfecta ammo (cheap stuff). The fail to feed was the last round in the 8 round mag. The fail to fire didn't fire even when I tried out the restrike capability. I'll run some better known ammo through it and see if I have any more issues.

Right now, Sig also has a rebate going where you get 2 extra magazines and a pistol bag.... with that and night sights already on the gun, I think it represents tremendous value.

I've been pocket carrying my Shield all week on vacation in the Smokies. If wearing something where it fits into the front pocket, it's hardly noticeable. If wearing something where I need to put it into a cargo pocket, I do feel it. Some short I have I need to carry in the cargo to avoid printing.

This was my thread from 18 mos ago so I'll chime back in: I bought both the Shield and the Sig P290. The trigger on the Shield is much better; so much so that I never even shot the Sig (but I still have it). The trigger on the Sig is long and heavy and the folks on the Sig forum don't believe it can be significantly improved. The Sig is a more attractive piece (to me) but I really prefer the Shield as a shooter.

You should go shoot that Sig. The trigger on mine is not bad. It is long, but it is smooth. Took me a couple of mags to get familiar with it, but now it doesn't bother me. Doing a lot of dry fire with mine currently.

Both the Sig and the Shield are a little too big for pocket carry for me and I have better choices for holster carry. For pocket carry I prefer my Kahr 380 or one of my LCPs. I really should sell the Sig but I just haven't gotten around to it.

Still hate the 290 trigger. IT sits in the safe. I should sell it but I never get around to it. Love the Sig P938 and my Shield. they get shot a lot and both are EDC weapons. really should sell the Sig but I have the Signess and its hard to part with any Sig. Same with S&W, just dont know the name for the need to purchase more S&W's. The "Signess" works great for naming the Sig problem.

I've bought a couple of guns to CC, but I always return to my shield. I've carried a Glock 26, 27, S&W 649 .357, but I always come back to my Shield.

I really like my P290RS...I find it a touch heavy (and big for pocket carry) but scary accurate, nice full sized night sights...mine is reliable and soft shooting...I found that after 100 trigger pulls or so that the trigger lightened up SIGnificantly (unintended pun)...

I carry mine mostly in an OWB holster and my GLOCK G26 Gen4 feels a bit better (but perhaps due to it feeling like most other GLOCKs but for the abbreviated grip and I like that it is 10+1) but I won't be selling my P290RS anytime soon...I don't really care for the 8 round extended magazines but perhaps with some shaving to the X-Grip it would fit better...I have this same issue with the X-Grip on my M&P 357c and a full sized mag...

SIG Sauer P290RS...it's a good shooter, nice sized (much smaller and thinner than a G26/M&P Compact), very accurate (I use 124GR Speer Gold Dots) at a great price, even better at the specials I see for them lately...

Wow just looking around & found this thread. I own & love the Sig p290 & S&W shield 40! Had to send the Sig back for a new restrike trigger group & dulled out front night sight. Had to get other night sight when the 2nd one went dim but it's been about 8 months & 1000 rds since then, I guess the 3rd times a charm. The Sig is quirky with the "all day long" "mushy" trigger pull, the 8rd mags that are hard to keep the 1st & sometimes 2nd round in (they pop out when pocket carrying), & the damn thing weighs about as much as a 1911! But for a "tiny" pistol it's a real sweet shooter! More accurate than the LCP it replaced. I like the "blunderbuss" looking barrel, it's weird. It carry's nicely in my Crossbread iwb.
The shield on the other hand has been flawless! No fte's, ftf's, or misfires. Got Trijicon night sights (amber-rear/green-front) & Talon grip tape for it. It took a bit to get accurate with it, it's a small "snappy" .40cal pistol after all. Was able to hit a 11 inch gong @ 50yds with it; not consistently, but did ring it a few dozen times. Plan to get an Apex trigger kit for it soon, put one in my FS M&P.45 & love it!
I've grown affectionate over the p290 but if I had to chose between the 2 I'd take the shield 40 in a heartbeat! Got a Crossbread iwb for the shield as well & it's way more comfortable than lugging around the Sig. I alternate between the 2 during the weekdays & carry my Ruger SR9c on the weekends (like the 17rd mags for it!).

The major difference between the P290RS (newer model) and the 9mm Shield is that the 290 is True DAO and the Shield is really a SAO gun(ignore the SMALL sear cock its suppsoed to do). Its really difficult for me to compare the two types of triggers. Personally I hate True DAO. I have the 290, a Sig P938 and the 9mm Shield. Love the 938 and the Shield. HATE the 290. Its all personal preference but I just can not get used to the True DAO trigger.

I own both and the Sig P290 in .380 has a slide that is very easy for an arthritic person to rack. The Shield is nearly impossible for an Arthritic person to rack. My wife is the person and she is very happy with the P290 that just takes a bit of time to get used to the trigger pull. I have the Shield which I find to be an outstanding pistol.

Perhaps you might want to look into this, to make the Shield easier for your Wife to rack: Safest way to rack your pistols Handi-Racker
One probably wouldn't want (or be able) to carry the Handi-Racker, but it would make racking that first round (at home, or at the range) easier for her.

Since there seems to be a little interest, I'll add that I am carrying the P290RS daily. It is still hot here, so I am still carrying in the front pocket of my cargo shorts. Carried all day while walking around the state fair without issues. Really like this pistol.

I also received my pistol bag and the two, six round magazines from the promotion. Very happy with the purchase.

Yes it's a neat little pistol. Know it got some bad press but what a sweet shooter! Weighs a bit for being tiny but counters recoil very well. I carry iwb & it's quick to get to & accurate.

I let my wife pick out the gun she liked best at my LGS. After handling several different guns she chose the Sig P290RS. She said it was the only one she could rack the slide without a problem and felt most comfortable with. We took it to the range and I share the same opinion of this firearm as many have already stated. It is very comfortable in the hand and is as reliable as it is accurate. My EDC is my Shield 9mm and I prefer it over the P290RS, but the Sig is still a great gun and I would feel well protected with it.

I paid about $450.00 for the one I bought for my wife, but Palmetto State Armory has them right now for $299.00.

I just ran across this thread. Do you still have the p290rs taking up space in your safe?

Where were you when I dumped my 290RS at a loss? I really wanted to like the gun but couldn't deal with the trigger creep. I even installed a RTK aluminum trigger but still hated the verrry looong creep. At the range, I asked two firearms instructors (friends) to shoot my 290RS and they both flinched when pulling the trigger and told me to sell it. They both advised me to try shooting a CCW before plunking down the cash.

It's a DAO pistol... what creep are you talking about? Do you mean the long DA pull before the hammer drops? I personally find the P290RS to be as good as any other small pistol as long as you're proficient with hammer-fired DAO guns.

The 290RS trigger breaks too far back for a man with my size hands, some smaller shooters may find it's ok. The Kahr triggers are a lot better than the 290RS. My LCP has a better trigger than the 290RS.

Kahrs are striker guns so it makes sense. I've had a couple, but their so-so reliability has bothered me.

I also agree with your assessment of where the trigger breaks on the P290RS, but I always chalked it up to being such a small gun. I don't put a whole lot of rounds through the SIG, but I have shot it enough to be comfortable that I can get solid hits out to 20+ yards if needed. I don't care for the tiny grip, but small guns have small dimensions. Concessions need to be made for the small size so I accept the shortcomings of all these little guns. It's 100% reliable, accurate, and reasonably priced so I think it's a good little pistol.

I bought one of those Palmetto specials back then and stupidly traded it off thinking I could do better with a Ruger SP101. It was great pistol with a long trigger pull but I could shoot palm sized groups at 25 yards with it. If I could find another for around 300-350, I'd get it. Especially since it came with 2 mags and holster.
I have Kahr CM9 now that shoots just as good along with a P9 and a CT380.
I'm waiting to pick up my Shield 9 next week when it comes in. Grabagun had it for $350. I'm sure I'm going to have fun with it along with a Henry Steel 357 carbine that's coming in also.
