Default Shield and XS Big Dots

Why does the rear sight of XS big dots not have the tritium (night sight) for the M&P shields?

Hell of a good question. One of the main reasons I went with AmeriGlo. Med large front and U notch rear. Easy to pick up. Especially in the dark.

I have XS Big Dot on my Shield.

I called XS and spoke with customer service.

XS informed me they are required to have more steal than currently on rear sight to encase the tritium vial and if they built up the rear sight they would also need to build up the front sight and per XS you would run into holster fit issues.

I went XS Big Dot for my Shield for the low profile rear sight because I pocket pack and with the height of the Shield the stock 3 dot would catch on my pocket.

I have no problem in low light with my XS Big Dot. The only time a tritium rear sight would be useful would be in complete darkness and in that scenario you are going to be belly to belly with the bad guy making sights useless.

RussC:

I asked Bo the same thing.... I have XS "Small Dot" sights on one of my EDC rotation guns, and had another gun (S&W CS45) with 'em, too. So finding that the M&P version was a tad cheaper got my attention .

Same answer from Bo - no place to put the vial.... You'd think they'd put a round vial into the thing, towards the front sight, instead of trying to use the vertical style, but.... IAC, it shoots fine. Not a paper puncher, but quite good enough for SD use. (The "Small Dot" version is only slightly worse - for me - for paper punching than the stock sights on the 1911. Doesn't seem to muck up SD-style shooting.)

I keep flip-flopping about night sights and lasers.... Both of my EDC 1911's have 'em, and my M&P9C ("around the house gun") has night sights, but I'm not sure....

(I love the laser for training, but it is kind of expensive.)

Regards,

The XS Big Dots I bought for my Shield do not fit right in the gun, the fs is too tight(even after much fitting) and the rs is too loose. Plus, I was not at all happy when I realized they were not "full" night sights. The sights were purchased through Amazon, I checked the description several times and it said nothing about the rs not being "lit". The company that sold them actually started giving me some difficulty about returning them
After some back & forth they finally did give an RMA and refund.
I'm waiting on TruGlo TFOs as a replacement.

I paid a gunsmith to install my XS Big Dot on my Shield and fortunately I have not needed adjusting so I can't speak from experience if the sights are too tight to adjust.

I can speak from experience that in the 6 months I have been pocket packing with the sights every range trip has been consistent with regard to the aim.

The design of the rear sight does open up your field of view with the shallow "v" shape over a square shape notch and post however alignment of front and rear sight is not as precise with a shallow "v" shape but for 7 yard shots I can group my shots in the black (7,8,9,10) of a 50 ft rated target.

I figure for increased speed to acquire target XS design provides over notch and post I gave up one inch in my 7 round groups at 7 yards. (1 1/2" notch & post vs 2 1/2" for XS)

I do like XS sights, they were great on my Glock but I don't like the idea of having only the front sight illuminated and would never have purchased these if I had known.
I am considering bringing the TFOs to be installed by a local shop.
