You don't really need it. Many people don't use it and even remove it. You can field strip the pistol by pulling the trigger with the disassembly lever down and the slide will come off just like a Glock.

I would want to know why it happened myself. Maybe you should contact S&W even if you don't want to send it in just to see what they say.

It's not needed, but since it just fell out, I'd question the integrity of the sear block. If it's broke, there may be something else broken. If it's whole, then you may be missing a pin or something. Either way, closer inspection is needed.

thanks a ton guys. i called S&W and they said that it needs to come in. honestly a PITA. as you probably already know... I had to fill out an online deal wait up to 4 working days for a response then mail in the gun. this thing is brand new never fired by me only s&w. i have NO idea where it came loose from or what happened. Its in tact and whole. no cracks just looks like a pin might have held it in place somewhere.... of course there is no pin to be found.

you know how it is. new gun you like it.... you want to shoot it and carry it and have no issues. lately everything i deal with seems to be a PITA. sorry for the "vent." what would you all do? send it in probably....?

i already filled out the form. just waiting for the email with the shipping label. honestly i have NEVER returned a gun in my life so im wondering how this will go....

Not needed but will possibly cost you a few dollars in resale value with it missing. Since it was the pin that holds the deactivation lever, try calling them back and explain that you have mechanical ability and want them to send the pin to you. It saves them money and you keep the gun. Currently they seem to take two weeks for repairs, one week shipping and one week in the factory.

I agree with Bob, if you have any inclination to work on your gun yourself, you can disassemble the gun and account for every part via guides and pictures online. Then ask S&W for the part, get it and reassemble it. It's really a piece of cake to take one down all the way.

I'm sure it will go smoothly. I've only sent one revolver in for repair and it was back in one week. The only thing that worried me was that after a week I hadn't heard anything from them, then the revolver was delivered so no problem.

I bought a new Shield 9 that was shipped without an ejector. I too have experience working on firearms, but Smith and Wesson would not ship me an ejector. The customer service reps do not have parts lists for the Shield yet and therefore can not ship you a part. Unfortunately the pistol will have to be shipped back to Smith and Wesson. They had mine back to me within two weeks and gave me extra magazines for my trouble. Trust me, Smith and Wesson will do right by you!

If you needed a simple part, they would just send it to you. But think of the legal problems that could surface if they sent you the lever, you installed it, & somehow the gun went off by itself killing an innocent bystander. This is why they would prefer to install the lever. Can you spell LIABILITY, or LAWYER? GARY

Yeah, if you know the part number, they will ship to you a lot of the time.

More than likely, they just want to be sure there's not something else wrong with it, since the lever just fell out.

thanks for the feedback guys!! much appreciated!!!

from all the videos ive watched on youtube it appears that SW did not install the pin that holds the spring and disconnect lever in place. the spring is just laying in there and i bet with a slight pry... it will come right out. at that point... the gun would/should function fine minus a sear disconnect lever. which honestly is pointless to me since ALL my training has been with glocks. im use to pulling the trigger to get the sear to drop the slide. i have a warranty form filled out and into SW just waiting on them to send my shipping label. probably useless... and a waste of time but still up in the air as to if ill send it.

Tango - thanks for the words on your experience. i would think a magazine would be NICE of them for all my trouble and time out from my nice new Shield. I was really looking forward to using it as my primary and conceal carry.

I had the same problem, I requested the RMA, but it was a few days before they sent the email. If you can find a part number, Smith and Wesson would send you what ever you needed, but I guarantee you, you won't find a single part number anywhere for a Shield 9 or 40. Just be patient, they will send you an email with the instructions to send your gun back. Had it been any other firearm but the Shield, you could have found a part number and they would have sent it to you. Per the customer services reps that I have spoken to, they don't have access to the parts list yet because the gun is still fairly new. Again, just be patient, I know from experience that having to send your new gun back can be frustrating, but Smith and Wesson took care of me. One other piece of advice that I was told on this forum, when you send your gun in, don't send the magazines with it. When I got mine back I was pleasantly surprised with new magazines. Good luck!

i was thinking i might send a letter on letter head telling them a little more detail about the issue. (not that they wont see the lever in the accompanied ziplock baggie! ha ha) and let them know that i was switching from my glock to this and how many days i have been without the gun. maybe that might encourage them to boost and reconfirm my decision to switch to the shield... who knows cant hurt.

Update on my shield with the faulty sear deactivation pin: the gun landed at SW on the 30th of Jan. I called on the 5th to make sure the gun would be mailed back to work address per my written letter. the letter explained what had happened to the gun prior to firing it.

I was told that the gun was finished and set to be mailed out on the 5th or 6th and I should have it on the 7th or 8th.

on the 11th when i had not received the gun, customer service rep "Michael" stated he could not locate the gun. He stated they had records that it was fixed however they did not know where it was. After a call to Wayne the supervisor and Michael the customer service rep. again this same day, Wayne could still not locate any shipping information. The next day (02-12-13) I called again and spoke to Michael. Michael stated the gun should have been shipped out but for whatever reason the gun was not shipped timely and subsequently wass caught up in a SW and ATF audit. He stated the gun now should be clear to ship. When i asked him what repairs were made to the gun, he stated more issues were discovered and the entire inner parts of the gun were replaced.

As i noted in the orginal letter to SW the firearm was being used in a LE application and being wo the firearm caused some issues for me. This gun was replacing some glocks that we currently use. I have NEVER had any issues with any firearm. And i have never seen any issues from firearms that were not the cause of human error on the user end. So this has me a tad uncomfortable. I know things happen and i understand warranties are in place for this reason. When i asked Michael what he could do to restore my faith in SW he offered overnight shipping.... really? thats it? Im not super pleased with how this entire situation went down. As i type this I am still without my shield.

It's times like these that one wishes he had a V-8; oh, and kept their Glock's.

Alnamvet68 - good point. to be fair, i love the glock but i also see that the shield in certain applications can be as good or better. for deep concealment (which is what im using this for) its hard to beat the set up on the Shield. now if i can get it and run some ammo through it and use the gun for what it was intended for.

please dont anyone take my post as a flame. im just updating and pointing out my individual experience.

S&W's customer service has usually been top notch. With the factory pumping out what 400-500 M&Ps per day right now to keep up with demand I am sure their quality control department has been impacted. Add the shipping department into the mix, with them shipping all these back ordered guns I can see where your's may have dropped off the radar. Generally, duty guns get first priority on repairs and return shipping. I had one that went back for a repair, needed it before traveling out of state I called the day before leaving and the customer service person gave me the same line, "can't find it in the system". The gun arrived at my door that same afternoon. I'm sure UPS or FedEX will be at your door soon.

Unfortunately I know how you feel. I called about a shield last thursday and was told that it was fixed and waiting on the mailroom. Called back yesterday and was told that it shipped last thursday and they couldnt find a tracking number. Called back today and was told that it was sent to shipping last Thursday and should be shipped in the next few days. I'm guessing that they are shipping new and warranty repairs out of the same mailroom without giving priority to the warranty returns which is total BS! Warranty returns should have an express lane in the mailroom as they already have my money and I have no functional gun.

If I buy a new gun through a dealer and it needs to go back to the factory I let the dealer do it.

LOL. I've done the same thing. There may be a small bit of knowledge in this old thread. I bought a 40C years ago that had a similar problem. It didn't spit out its sear deactivation lever, but the sear locking block was wobbling badly in the frame making a poor trigger pull really awful. Plastic is pretty hard to machine or smooth, so I ended up shimming the little nasty till the sear block would stay put. Did wonders for the trigger pull. I have not noted this defect on any recent M&P I have picked up so maybe S&W has made progress in their quality control or selection of injection molding subcontractors.
