Shield Price
Is 550 dollars a fair price for the S@w Shield?
This is the dealer asking price.

A LGS in my town recently advertised them for $649. I contacted them and told them I would Never buy anything from them. I also had them remove me from any ads or email newsletters. Don't get me started...Ha...

Guess it depends on how bad you want it! They ARE in seemingly short supply but I have a tough time paying more than MSRP for anything. Got my first when they came out last April for $440, thought it was well worth retail price, found a GS in another state selling Shields about 3 mos ago for $379 (!), picked up the 40 at that price. Think from what I hear that was a fluke/ lucky break on my part. IMO, they are a reliable (have about 1000 rnds through mine now....no probs or issues), lightweight, easily concealable pistol. Conventional wisdom is that once S&W mfg has met demand, prices will fall back to retail....or less. Who knows, given the current climate regarding guns/politics/personalcrime, when that will be. Folks are apparently paying $550 and more for them so whether or not you should or will is entirely up to you. For some, your question is easy to answer...for others, not so much. Good luck with your decision.

Shield Price
Is that for the 9 or 40? I've seem some dealers charge more for the 9. I got my 40 for 409.99 yesterday. I may have paid 550 as I really wanted this gun. Depends how much you deem it is worth to you. They are in very short supply that is for urge

I paid $439.99 + tax back in late October. I passed on one the week before at $499.99. The MSRP listed on S&W's web site is $449.99. Sounds like the gunshop is gouging the price a bit to me

Fair price means both of you are happy with the transaction.
For me, it is not a fair price. I waited until I could buy at LE price of $335. Why I didn't buy two right away is bothering me...
So if you really want the gun and can stomach being taken for a ride, then it is a fair price.

I paid $600 for a 9MM about 2 weeks ago. I saw two of them close that same day on Gunbrokers for $700+. I'd buy another if I could find it.

I'm in Canton OH. Where did you purchase yours?
I really want a 9mm. Shot my buddies 40, and love the feel of the gun. Going to get rid of my LC9 if I can find one $500 or less.

Was at the gun show here in Des Moines today. Over 600 tables and only 1 Shield and it was tagged for $700.
Given demand and that guns under 10rd. capacity...would I be crazy to pay that? Or would another 9c make more sense?

I wanted a Shield for my wife to carry. My brother had one and she was to try it out on a Sat. The Friday before, I was at a local show and the dealer had a Shield for $447. The one freakin time I don't impulse buy! She shot the gun the next day and loved it. I've been chasing two ever since. One for me as well because I really liked it.
However, and she agrees, we have a Glock 19 and there's no way the Shield is a $500 gun. I would pay $500, but no more. Just not gonna do it. Though we both really like the Shield and the trigger is nice, the G19 is a great gun in its own right. So why pay $700, when a G19 fits the bill. Things will calm down, so unless you have no sidearm whatsoever, I would not pay that price. Heck, I have a hard time paying regular retail for any polymers, because it's not like they're a gorgeous blued S&W 41. They're just black plastic...

Great perspective. Appreciate that. Just going to add another S&W to my family and wait "just a bit longer" for a shield.

Shield
I missed the Des Moines show today but was at a LGS in Boone and the owner said he could still get Shields $399 was the price he quoted me, he also had 2 M&P 40SW/357 15rd magazines I bought them both for $38 ea, He says he's not going to jack prices up just because of the current demand.I like his attitude, next new gun I buy will be from him.

Makes me wonder if S&W will increase the MSRP from $449, perhaps at the anniversary of its introduction, in April 2013 due to the huge success of the pistol. I can see plus and minus reasons to do so. The company would risk being perceived as being opportunistic and price-gouging in the current climate, but on the other hand, demand wouldn't likely drop enough to make any immediate difference, and S&W is in business to make money.
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see a $499 MSRP, making this still an excellent value in a CC platform. Where else are you going to buy a reliable, ultra-concealable, large caliber self defense pistol for that kind of money? If the MSRP does go up, then the $550 LGS price you're seeing now wouldn't be unreasonable.
All I can say is, if you can get one for less, go for it. But prices aren't likely to drop on this pistol; if anything, they will go up. People keep talking about "when the demand levels off," and I just don't see that happening -- at least in such a way that the current MSRP will stay in place. Just my humble opinion; YMMV.

Well...the Shield is a good value at $450. Past that, I'm out. The AWB panic has effected all guns, in the sense that folks, including women, who are racing to a License to Carry a firearms. The Shield is on the tip of everyone's tonque, so it's benefitting from the fury.
You could be right that the price will increase, but I tell you I won't be paying more than $500 out the door.

I paid $590.00 and it really hurt. I waited for over 4 months for one to even be available. When, I got there the line for that item was over 40 deep of people 'on the list'. I was offered $650.00 cash as I walked out. My conscious would never allow me to do that. I spent everything I had saved, so walked out without ammo or holster.

Smith and Wesson's MSRP is only $449. They're starting to show up at dealers near Tallahassee. Unless you want it BAD, I'd wait.
I got on two waiting lists at LGS in town. Heard through a local gun forum about 10 that came into a small shop in South Georgia. Called and got an FFL to transfer for me. The NEXT DAY, one of the waiting lists called me.
Good luck in your search!

Damn, I would tell them to f*ck off. You wait in that line and all they can offer you is $60. Hats off to you to not selling it though. How long did it take you to get the holster and ammo? I would be going crazy.

Got mine today
I got my Shield today, ordered it 12/29/12 and paid $439 at G.A.T.Guns.
My problem is I enjoy our M&P 9C and Bodyguard 380 more that the Shield. If you count the Model 39 I have to many mouths to feed.
It's a nice gun however it just does not do it for me.

I searched for months. LGS said "hope to get one soon" until I gave up with him when I found he had a waiting list. But wouldn't admit he had one. One of his employees slipped and asked me if I was on it. I won't be back.
I just kept calling regional gun shops within 100 miles every day when until I finally got lucky. Got one of each for $449 a piece.
I have seen $550 at gun show in Atlanta lately. They had several. And LGS asking $659. So it's had bad do you want, how much effort are you willing to put into it.

I paid $419 plus tax and a 10 dollar background check for out the door for about $475 last year after being on a waiting list for 5 weeks, and with the way things are now if you can afford it and really want the weapon then it is a fair price just not one that I would pay, get the price up front wherever you go and in writing not by word of mouth!

$499.00 BASE PRICE for a 9mm non-Cali off roster "free world" version in early February, 2013, Central California. If you haven't yet seen the rostered Cali version, it has amongst other things a red painted cartoon like rooster comb/shark dorsal fin pop-up on top of the slide that indicates that the weapon is loaded (shaking my head in embarassment). The drills and hoops out here for ANY handgun purchase is to say the least a trying experience. Absolutely enjoy this clean and efficient handgun.
