Default Have the 40 Shield with the 9mm barrel....chance to buy a Shield 9

I picked up a Shield 40 last week with the intention of getting a 9mm barrel in order to have 2 guns for basically the price of an extra mag and barrel. My barrel should be here tomorrow

I shot the 40 this weekend and to be honest I didn't care much for the snappiness and recoil of the round. I think that the 9mm barrel will be fine to use at the range for practice but not to carry

I have a chance to perhaps get a Shield 9. Would I be better off parting ways with the 40 and just getting the 9 so I can also use that as my main EDC?

Or man up and get used to the 40 lol

Depends what you want for it. Lol, I might be interested . I have the shield 9 and I would like to have a 40. I have a 40 sigma but I don't use it for conceal carry. Iv never shot the Shield 40 cal so I can't really comment on what you should do or which you would like better

I suggest trying the 40 a while longer. If you're like me, you'll start to appreciate the "bulldog" in that little pistol and you'll be grateful to have it if the situation ever arises when you will need it. Not that the 9mm isn't a perfectly adequate self-defense round, but the 40 is a notch better IMHO. You have the best of both worlds now, with 9mm for the range, and 40 for S/D, both on the same platform.

If you decide to part ways with the 40, though, and you want to let go of the 9mm barrel separately, let me know.

My 9 barrel should be here today I hope. Plan on Frog lubing it and then hitting the range I really want to like the .40....maybe some more range time will help in taming it down a bit. I do like it for the reasons you mentioned

Tango,
Please let me know if you decide to sell the .40. But if you want my opinion, the first shot is the most important and accurate. Make it count with the bigger round.

Trade ur .40 to someone with the 9mm. There are plenty of 9mm owners who wish they would have gotten a .40 now that they know the conversion works so easily. My 2 cents.

I like simplicity. However, over simplicity can be a problem at times. Yes, in a perfect world, you'd never need a follow up shot. Nothing wrong with either the 9 or the 40 though.

I got on the waiting list for both the 40 and 9....the 40 came in first, after only a month and a half. So, Now I'm in search of the 9mm barrel, as I already have the M&P FS and would like to stay with a single caliber, due to reloading. Any idea's beside "Guns and Gear" who is out of stock, or S&W, who is backordered to get the barrel?

Stimpy, you might try posting on the Wanted to Buy thread on this Forum, for one...

I'd been looking for a 9mm barrel as well, and happened across one on here that's on its way to me as we speak. Just dumb luck, but I realize I could have increased my odds and also reduced my wait time if I'd posted an ad...

Give my best to Ren!

My barrel and an 8 round magazine came today from Guns and Gear. Frog Lubed it and hit the range. 150 rounds of Federal Champion and WWB 115grn down range without the slightest hint of a hiccup. Man is the Shield a nice shooter in 9. It is great to have 2 guns basically for the price of a barrel

They don't have it on their website. You have to call and ask. 413-786-0100

Last check they were out of stock. They are pretty active on Facebook so they may answer a question there. They are closed Mondays and even when open it is hit or miss if they will answer the phone

I drove by the place a week ago and it is sort of a run down..well looks like a garage....but you know something...the service is outstanding once you are able to get a hold of them. I went to a gun show that they were at and the people were standing 3 deep at their table. Obviously they are doing something right

Does it take a special mag to run 9mm in the 40, or will the standard 9mm Shield mag work?

Actually u can run the 9mm's in the Shield .40 mag, but I have personally had feeding issues a few times. This could very well be the ammo i was using, so take that with a grain of salt. Others seem to have no problems at all. Either way u look at it, u need a SHIELD mag

I just bought a Shield 9mm mag just because I had the chance to. So its a personal preference for me.

I carried a Glock 19 for six years, then my son talked me into buying an XD40 subcompact--hence my signature. I loved the XD and preferred the .40 cal round over the 9 mm, but as I got older (I'm now 70) I found the XD a little heavy and bulky to carry. I ordered a Shield 40 and was just notified yesterday that it was being shipped.

Caliber is a matter of personal preference. My wife also has a concealed-carry permit. When she got it I tried to put her into a 9 mm but she preferred the XD40 to any 9 mm she tried. She still carries it. I have friends who swear by their 9 mm pistols. Diff'rnt strokes.

I just bought the 40 .. does installing the 9mm barrel make the gun shoot just like the 9mm in regards to recoil?

Yep, 9mm is 9mm no matter how u look at it. of course the GR will play a minor part but it still shoots as if it were a 9mm to begin with.

I can take mine converted and then take my ole ladies original 9mm shoot both at the same time, and recoil is pretty much the same. Obvious recoil feels a tiny bit more in ur off hand, but what would u expect.

My suggestion to you is get in line with the rest of the guys. Back in October/September I released the info on the .40 to 9mm conversion showing it could be done just by simply dropping in the 9mm barrel. Many people bought them and they have since then went onto backorder. They can be had, but ur either going to pay a premium or ur going to have to wait. I use 9mm at the range for cheap plinking and i use 9mm for my CW. I train from time to time with my SD ammo, just to remain fresh on my .40cal. But for tinking around, its the 9mm.

Just wondering why wouldn't you use the 40 barrel in your CW or did you really mean 40?

Keep the .40 & develop the appropriate grip strength.

Proper Shooting is not grip strength, its forward push on the strong hand and rearward pull on the weak. That is the proper way to shoot and shoot all day without hand fatigue

Practice what you carry. Train that muscle memory. Count those shots. Develop a cadence.
If you value "manning up with 40cal" over being as effective and proficient as you can be via the 9mm, then stick with the 40.
If you want to shoot 8 round strings of 9mm at the range and carry 7 of 40, also your prerogative. I just don't think the extra cost of a barrel and disparity in training to carry is worth the bit of ammo cost saving.

I agree with this. Muscle memory is everything. I remember a post on this forum that said, "anyone that says they shoot better with a .40cal than a 9mm is a liar." I shot mainly .40cal for 4 years straight. There is a point where you aren't even aware of recoil. When I occasionally shot 9mm I was not better! I shoot both now and enjoy both.

In my experience, there is a night and day difference in the shooting experience of the M&P compacts and the Shields. If you want a 40, get the M&P40c.
