Default M&P9 Shield Barrel

Guns and Gear in Agawam MA has them for sale. Whether in stock is another story. Mine should be arriving today

They are hard to get ahold of sometimes though

Another thread mentioned that you may be able to order from S&W directly now for less $$

Guns and Gear was $75 plus $10 shipping. S&W was $61.00 plus $6.50 shipping.

Just a question of availability. Not always in stock at either location.

Guns & Gear 413 786-0100

S&W 800 331-0852 ext 4125

Don't tell S&W it is for a barrel swap. Make up a story that you want a backup barrel, you want to keep the stock barrel and polish the new barrel, etc. If S&W finds the barrels are being ordered for swaps, they may cut off the sales.

S&W part numbers:

Shield 9mm 42199
Shield 40 42185

Bob

I received my barrel from Guns and Gear last week...dropped it in my 40 and performed great! Only meh is the quality the feed ramp...it worked fine though

The feed ramps always seem to have some sort of blemish..that dark spot won't buff out

I have some questions regarding swapping out the barrels and mags for a different caliber, aren't there going to be ejector and extractor issues here? I know you can't do that with a Colt 1911 without having to buy a new slide at the very least.

Have you measured the width of the barrel hoods of the two barrels? A lot of folks trying this in the full size M&Ps have found that 9mm barrels and mags will work, but accuracy will suffer due to side to side play at lockup due to the 9mm barrel hood being narrower. I am one of these people. I now use a proper conversion barrel in my full size .40.

YMMV

They all work fine with no accuracy issues. The extractor and ejector are the same parts in the different calibers guns, so there is no issue with the swap. You must swap model to model: FS 40 with FS 9mm barrel; Compact 40 with Compact 9mm barrel; Shield 40 with Shield 9mm barrel. I have measured the barrels and found the outside dimensions of the barrels are the same, model to model. The only variation is the tang/tab at the top rear of the barrel (at the sight hole). The 9mm tang is slightly more narrow than the tang on the 40 barrel. With the 9mm barrel installed into the 40 slide, there is a little extra side to side play, at the rear of the barrel (very minimal extra movement). Everyone that has made this barrel swap have said this does not affect accuracy. Some have even said they felt they were more accurate with the 9mm barrel installed. It is an inexpensive way to have two different gun calibers, for the price of a barrel.

I did the swap to my Shield 40, to reduce the cost of practice ammo. I use mostly 9mm for practice and shoot a few of my high power SD 40 ammo, to keep me familiar with the higher felt recoil and flip. I always carry my Shield as a 40. I have not had any feeding issues using my 40 magazines to feed the 9mm cartridges. I would suggest using a 9mm magazine, if doing the barrel swap for carry. You don't want to take any unnecessary chances for mis-feeds while carrying. Using the 40 magazine for practice doesn't have a risk factor, only a chance of a mis-feed. I also bought a 9mm magazine, which works perfectly and turns my Shield 40 into the Shield 9.

Thank you for this information! I just back-ordered one with Smith & Wesson. For anyone else who might be placing an order - I was asked what I was going to do with the barrel? As you might suspect, the customer service representative was not very happy to hear I was going to use it for a .40 conversion and further stated "we do not endorse doing that - do not send it back here if something goes wrong."

He was not able to give an estimate on when the backorder might be filled.

Should have asked him why are they selling them then? I mean do people keep spare barrels around of the same caliber just for the hell of it?

Maybe they do..I never have

yes there is very very very minimal play in the barrel if you push on it..but then again the 9 barrel in my FS 9 has a little bit as well

Ive shot 150 rounds, accurate and no issues

Don't say to S&W you are ordering for a barrel conversion. Say you want a back up barrel, you want a barrel to polish and still keep the original, etc. If S&W feels the orders are for barrel swaps, they may put a stop to the barrel sales.

They are never going to tell you it works. They are going to advise against a barrel swap. They want to sell guns, not barrels. There is much more profit in a $450 to 600 gun than in selling a $70 barrel. Their though may be if you don't do a barrel swap, maybe you just might buy another gun.

For all of you thinking about the barrel swap, you can thank Smitty357, as he tested this back around September +/_. He owned a Shield 40 and a Shield 9mm, and he swapped the 9mm barrel into the 40 slide, and found it worked fine. He has posted several videos regarding the swap, and advised us of Guns and Gear Outlet, where we could purchase the 9mm barrels. We have teased him that he should be getting a percentage of all the 9mm barrel sales.

A number of us have made the swap with our Shields, and when we see someone asking which gun should they buy, a 40 or 9mm, the answer is easy. We say choose 40, as you can order a 9mm barrel and have both for the price of a barrel. So Smitty you have started a trend. And again I thank you for showing us all this easy, drop in conversion.

Bob

I called back on Thursday and did get a barrel put on back-order with S&W. Has anyone order via S&W and if so, how long did it take to get it?

Yes I know someone that ordered the Shield 9mm barrel from S&W. He got it delivered last week and S&W screwed up and sent him the Compact 9mm barrel. They are sending him the correct Shield 9mm barrel and a return shipper for the wrong barrel. He has not got the correct barrel as of yesterday (Friday 2/8/13).

New Shield 9MM owner, first time poster. Did not know about the barrel swap with the .40, I take it that the .40 barrel can't be swapped into the 9MM? Can anyone explain why? Just curious.

No big deal, I was looking for a reason to get another Shield (.40 this time).

Great bunch of folks here, been lurking for a few days before signing up. I'm glad I did.

The 40 barrel cannot go into the 9 unless you do a little bit of grinding to make it fit. The 9 fits fine in the 40. There is a tiny bit of movement if you push on the barrel but I don't think it is enough to cause an issue?

The 40 barrel into the 9mm slide will work. The following photos show what area on the 40 barrel needs to be reduced, so it will fit into the 9mm slide. You grind the tang, on the 40 barrel, so it will fit into the 9mm slide opening, which is narrower than the 40 slide width opening. The fit is even better than the 9mm barrel swapped into the 40 slide, since by grinding the tang, you make the 40 barrel a perfect fit. There is a little extra side to side play with the 9mm barrel in the 40 slide, as you can see by the photo dimensions. This extra play does not cause any issues in the 40 to 9mm swap, and does not affect accuracy at all. Your width should be similar to mine. The 40 barrel needs to be reduced .026 inch, .013 per side. Then the 40 barrel will drop into the 9mm slide. All else works perfect, recoil springs, extractor, and the ejector. Then all you need are the 40 magazines.

Bob

Thanks for the info on modifying the .40 barrel to fit the 9mm Shield. I still haven't found a shield but now I know I can buy either caliber and then switch barrels to have a 2 caliber pistol.

You can't go from a 9 to a .40. The bolt face is too small on a 9mm slide to accept the .40 cartridge.

Sorry Lost Lake, but the bolt face is the same for both models. There is only .035 inch (1/32 inch or 1/64 inch per side) difference between the diameter of the cartridge rims. The slides are exactly the same except that the width of the slot, where the barrel tang fits. This slot is at the top rear of the bolt face and is narrower on the 9mm slide than on the 40 slide. The slide markings are different (Shield 9 or Shield 40). Everything else is the same, extractor, ejector in the lower housing, recoil springs, etc. 40 into the 9mm will work with just a little metal removal from the tang on the 40 barrel.

The following photos show what area on the 40 barrel needs to be reduced, so it will fit into the 9mm slide. You grind the tang, on the 40 barrel, so it will fit into the 9mm slide opening, which is narrower than the 40 slide width opening. I know Midway and Brownells sells barrels and barrel conversions.

Barrels | Smith & Wesson M&P | Semi-Automatic Handguns

It's funny seeing you guys saying you buy from Guns & Gear in Agawam.

I'm local to them and they are my go to store, they are great people there and stand behind what they sell.

It's just funny seeing someone from Florida (or somewhere else) saying that they buy from them...

Right now the problem is finding anyone that has the barrels in stock. There are many gun suppliers that sell the barrels, but finding any in stock, is the problem. Guns and Gear Outlet was the first to sell Shield barrels. They do not show them on their website. Call them at 413 786-0100 and order. I also know someone that ordered and received the Shield 9mm barrel directly from S&W. The number is 800 331-0852 ext 4125. If you call Smith, don't say a conversion barrel, as they don't sell conversion barrels. Tell them you want a backup barrel or your polishing the stock barrel and want a another barrel if you decide to sell your gun, etc.

Bob

Just called S&W for a 9mm Shield barrel and they said they do not sell just the barrels. He said you have to send the gun into them so they can fit it and make sure everything is ok. Sounds like they have caught onto the .40 to 9mm barrel drop in conversions people are doing.

Default S&W want gun returned for replacement barrel

I just spoke with S&W parts and they would not accept an order for a replacement 9mm shield barrel. I wasn't trying to get a barrel under warranty and told them that. The rep insisted I had to ship the gun to them for proper fitting?!? Sounds like BS to me. In light of all the discussion here I'd say they are onto the the useage for conversions.

If anyone has other sources for 9mm SHield barrels please share.

Thanks

If anyone has other sources for 9mm SHield barrels please share.

Thanks

This has pretty much been the case with everyone who calls S&W in reference to barrel now days. They have finally caught on to what we are doing. You're best chances would be find a 3rd party dealer who may have one or may be able to get one.

Scroll up through the replies on this topis and u will find a place called Guns and Gear that most of us ordered our parts from. You can check with them from time to time and they may put their hands on one. When all of this first started, this was the only place we could find that could put their hands on the parts for us, besides S&W.

Bob, do you know of anyone who done this conversion from 9 to 40? I have a 9, and I was thinking of selling it to buy a 40, but I am having issues finding a 40 in my area.

After reading about them here I called Guns and Gear to order a 9mm barrel for my .40 shield. I was told they were sold out and not taking backorders. They did say they had more barrels coming in but couldn't say when. I was really getting frustrated but then they suggested that I "like" Guns and Gear on Facebook. That way I'd recieve notice as soon as they came in. I did as suggested and had a barrel within a week (early May). My 9mm conversion works perfectly.

Hope this helps

Click the link below to my original .40 to 9mm conversion. We discuss just about everything about the .40 and the 9mm. Page 3 shows a user who converted his 9mm to .40 after we informed him we believed it would work due to everything being the same besides the barrel and the mag. He bought the .40 barrel and converted it to fit his 9mm slide. Keep in mind he modified the .40 barrel NOT his 9mm slide. He had to do this to make the .40 barrel fit the face of the 9mm slide.

In the end the conversion both ways works flawless.

Converted my Shield .40 to 9mm

I have been looking for a 40 pro 5" slide to put on my standard 9 with no luck, like all the other post I'm sure S&W would rather just sell another pistol. I would not want to go through the trouble and expense redoing another sloppy trigger

I was considering either a Shield 9mm or XDS 9mm. This thread sold me on the Shield .40.

It's the best of both worlds. Small, slim CCW gun in both calibers.

Default S&W Not selling barrels

I called S&W customer service and they confirmed they don't sell barrels. They said if a barrel is defective they require you to send it in. I said I wanted a back up barrel. He said "we don't sell aftermarket barrels right now".

Guns and Gear were very friendly when I called. They said they haven't received any in 3 months.

Lucky dogs who got them while you could.

I would actually prefer to get the Shield 9mm barrel and modify the .40 barrel to fit it as you could get the slide to fit perfectly. I can't find anyone who has done this though. Everything I've seen has been .40 to 9mm.

A few members have already done the 9mm to .40 conversion. Look up to post #37 and u will see a link to my original video. Read over on page 3 and u will see some members do a write up on this.

The side to side is nothing to worry about. It affects it so much that my .40 converted to 9mm is actually more accurate than my ole ladies 9mm was.........But all weapons are different in the hands of different shooters.
