Default New Shield 40 problems

I Just picked up the 40 Shield and took it to the range for its break in rounds. After about 100 rounds i got a FTE, failure to completely chamber a few rounds, then the back of the slide and the firing pin mechanism blew out on the ground! I put it back together and had to keep an eye on the plastic rig that holds the firing pin unit in place as it would tend to almost fall out every 5-6 rounds! ***, not happy. Anyone else have this mess of issues with a new shield? Is there an easy fix for the back piece? Check out the pics.

Shields may take up to 400 rounds to break in properly. FTE and FTF are not uncommon during the break in.

If I had to guess, I would say the back plate was not fully inserted. It should never come straight back out like that. Can you post a pic of how you had it before you fired/before it falls out?

Looks like time to contact Smith and get it back home. The Shields have been very good but there are exceptions with all things mechanical. Sorry it may be yours but that's why they have a lifetime warranty.

I don't have any pics but it is loose, I can feel it snap in but it just works its way back out. It causes the slide to not return to battery. I was hoping to just get a new part, I will be calling CS at S&W today. I will post outcome

You do have a problem. The pressure of the striker spring should keep the end cap in place. Could be a defective molded cap, or a defective striker nylon guide, or defective striker spring. Call S&W for a return and warranty repair. You gun will be gone about two weeks. You can't trust a gun like that. Just to let you know I have never seen a post of the cap dropping off in the last eight months. Very isolated incident.

Wow! Haven't seen that before

Now you made me go pull my Shields out to check the tension on that part! There is a tiny bit of up and down movement but doesn't feel like it is gonna fall out

Keep us updated!

When I noticed the damage on mine after some range time, it would move side to side about an eighth inch.

I think the test fire dates were 1/14 for my 40 and 1/26 for the 9

They don't have any side to side play, the tiny bit is up and down which makes sense

Kev
I see you live in central Mass. May be worth taking a ride out there, Call them first see if you can drop it off. I live in Boston and have taken the ride out there many times, They usually fix on the spot, worth a shot rather than waiting the time to be mailed.

Did you drop it off at the main plant? The one on Roosevelt? I drove by it for the first time a couple of weekends ago and was amazed at the size of the place.....looks like a prison!

This appears to be the second 40 Shield with issues in the tail end. Honestly, I've never shot a mid-size or compact 40 polymer that I thought could handle the recoil. The 40 has pressure that these guns just don't like. Glock had issues early on with their 23 as well. I picked up two 9mm Shields, then had to travel. I can't wait to shoot break these in, as I cross my fingers. They are 1/2013 dated, so we'll see...

Default Update:

Guys, thanks for the replies and sorry for the delay in getting back to this post (my notifications don't seem to be emailing me!) Anyway, i posted this on another thread.

I got the slide back a week ago after a two week wait (not to bad). Took it to the range and after 45 rds the dam end cap slid down again. I pushed it back up and ran another 100 rds thru and had to push the end cap up again. I ran a total of 200 rds thru it yesterday and 150 today with the end cap staying in place??? Also had problems with the slide fully cycling to seat the next round, in 150 rounds i had to "help" the slide close about 15 times(3 different brands of ammo, clean and lubed gun)! I have sent another email to CS and am awaiting the reply. This sux, i really like shooting this gun but having these problems has me very leary at this point to use as an EDC. I hear lots of great reviews about this gun, looks like i got a troubled one, hope they can get it straightened out this time!

I will update again when i get it back.

I have a new Shield in .40 with serial # HAD7xxx. I've put about 800 rounds through it so far. Today, at round 163 during a morning range session, I noticed that the pin which secures the locking block was 3/4 of the way out of the hole it sits in. I would've been very unhappy (or much worse off) if that pin dropped out while firing the pistol. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I took a punch and re-set the pin but as a 35 year S&W owner (with over a dozen S&W firearms today), I was not happy - that firearm will be enroute to Springfield, MA as soon as my FedEx label arrives.
