Default M&P22 vs Ruger SR22 vs Walther P22

My brother and I went to the range today to put the M&P22 and the Ruger SR22 to the test to see which one would come out victorious. It was funny because one of my brother's friend came as well and he had the Walther P22 so we was like alright we will put all three to the test.

First off we shot from 25yrd standing still shooting little round targets that you get from walmart. Winner Ruger SR22 2nd M&P22 3rd Walther P22
Second we took turns shooting each gun at 15yrds moving to hit a total of 20 targets (bowling pins) winner M&P22 was on the mark and up to the challenge no matter who was shooting it, 2nd Ruger SR22 and third WaltherP22
Third we had to pick up the gun and run while trying to hit all 20 targets without stopping which was very difficult. Each person used all three guns to make a complete comparison. Again the M&P22 came in first followed by the Ruger and then the Walther.
We shot for several hours and this is what we came up with to sum everything up. Accuracy M&P22 was by far more accurate than the rest. Reliability M&P22 won this because the Ruger had one misfire (ammo related) The Walther was having problems through out the day with jamming, stovepipe and not cycling the other round. The feel of the guns Everyone agreed the Ruger felt better in the hand and the M&P came in a close second. The Walther just didnt feel real good, it felt real cheap compared to the other pistols.

When it was all said and done I seen my Ruger lose to the more accurate, reliable and just flat out better gun the M&P22. We all agreed the Walther is real picky with ammo and you will spend more time clearing the gun than you will shooting it with certain ammo.

I was crazy about the Ruger and I really felt it would win this challenge but I was badly wrong and my hat go's to Smith & Wesson for such a great 22 pistol.

Ive got a walther (actually the old lady's gun), and so far have put a few hundred rounds of cci mini mags through it and havent had any issues whatsoever. I hear that a lot of the walther p22's are hit and miss with them being lemons... What size was the walther? I've got the 3.4 inch barrel and it is an absolute blast to shoot.. If the ruger and M&P perform that much better, i really need to go give one a try and compare. Ive thought about picking up a 22 just for playing with, because its so cheap! What ammo were you running?

Ammo used was Remington Golden bullets, Federal bulk pack, Remington Thunder bolts, Winchester WB. We all used the same type ammo in every gun on each drill.

The M&P 22 was more consistent through out the drills. Yea the Ruger won the first 25 yard standing still but the M&P 22 was so close in that drill. It was two more bulls-eye hits out of 30 shots with 3 different people that was the difference in which the M&P was in the first ring.

If the Ruger won the 25 yard standing, then I would say that it won overall. You cannot blame the gun for a lousy Winchester Golden round. Your various other drills are frankly subjective and prove little or nothing, although I am sure they were fun, meaning no offense.

Plus, the Ruger is small enough for concealed carry. The M&P 22 is too large for anything but a training and range gun -- if you are going to carry a gun that big there are better choices.

A Ruger Mark lll will out shoot them all. BTW, did Walther ever get the slide issues fixed on the P-22? They were having trouble with them breaking.

I have both the Ruger and the M&P and I love them both but we didn't do the size caparison. We wanted to see which one was more accurate and reliable in different situations. To tell you the truth I wouldn't want either gun as a carry gun (better than nothing). I have my M&P 45 for that. All I can say is your not always going to be standing still during stressful situations. The M&P was more accurate on the run and through out the drills. The Ruger was good but it didn't seem as easy to get the sites on the target as the M&P.

I love the feel and the size of the Ruger but if I had to pick only one gun to save my life it would be the M&P. M&P holds 12rds, Ruger only 10rds. If I was going to pack one as a carry gun of course it would be the Ruger but as I said above this wasn't about which one was a better carry gun.

Don't know, it was the first time shooting the Walther and I didn't know about any slide issues. I do know it was a couple of months old and yes I know the Ruger Mark III will out shoot them. I shot a friend of mines Ruger Mark III and thats one heck of a gun.

I own an M&P22, a Walther P22 and a Ruger 22/45.
CCI Mini-Mags 36gr HP shoots the tightest groups in all three guns.
Bench resting at 25 yards yielded 2 inch groups with the M&P and 22/45 and 4" with the P22. Put a 2MOA red dot on the 22/45 and shot dime sized groups with it. I didn't have a way to mount the red dot on the M&P, so based on open sights on both, they shot the same sized groups at 25 yards. I'm using both for rimfire steel challenge.

Thats awesome. I've owned the M&P for 2 weeks now, Ruger 6 months and first time shooting the Walther. It was the first time for them to ever see and shoot the M&P/ Ruger.

Thumbs up

I own the Ruger SR22 and the M&P 22. I like both guns, for much the same reasons. Both are accurate, reliable with most any ammo, easy to strip for cleaning and fun to shoot. The Ruger is more cute and cuddly, it's small size appealing to women and younger shooters. The Smith & Wesson has a more grown-up tactical feel and its bigger size fits better in larger hands.

I couldn't really choose between the two and purchased them about a month apart from each other. IMHO they're both winners!
