Default Shield 9mm & +P

Hey guys, got a question for ya. I have a Shield 9mm, I was looking for carry rounds at my local gun shop and the guy recommended Corbon 115gr JHP. I know the manual says to not shoot +P out of the gun, and I told him that but he said as long as it's not 135gr +P the gun is fine shooting those rounds. So I bought them. Is he right? The box was $25 for 20 rounds, expensive in my eyes. But I'm just worried if I have to use it for defensive purposes, it might damage the gun, but he was so sure that it would be ok. Any thoughts into this? The place I bought them from is pretty reputable, so I took his word for it.

You should be fine. I carry Ranger 124 gr +p in mine. I've run a couple boxes thru it to check function. I shoot fmj at the range.

The manual will say a lot of things, 1/2 of it has to do with lawsuits and cya. You can shoot ANY +p in it, just dont make it a daily habit. Try several boxes....if they work great carry them and shoot the avg fmj, if not find another +p

sorry i didn't get back to my own thread. i had it set up to notify if someone responds and it never did. thanks for your responses. makes me feel a bit more comfortable with it. the only problem is, that darn ammo is soo expensive, makes it hard for me to want to even try to shoot +p at the range. what are your thoughts on using Hornady Critical Duty 135gr flexlock +p out of it? i have a 50 box of those for my Kahr i could afford to shoot some of those since i have more than i need.

Doesn't the manual just say to avoid PROLONGED use of +p ammo? In other words, just don't run it through the gun at every range session. Disclaimer: I don't own a shield, but do own a nano.....that is what my manual says. I can't imagine them being much different in that aspect.

Myself. I don't use +P. Do to the fact most of the powder is waisted in shooting it in that short of a barrel. It just doesn't have enough burn time. I stick to the 115gr ball and it works just fine in the range of the Shield.

yes, i just re-read the manual and it says it may cause quicker wear on the parts, and +p+ must not be used. but back to my last question, is 135gr +p not going to bother the gun shooting say 10-20 rounds? and would you carry 115gr +p or the 135gr +p?

It will be fine shooting that amount, and probably much more. Like what was said above though, in this size of gun,I don't see the minuscule power advantage of +p to be worth it. A load like 135gr Hornady critical duty will plenty stopping power.

It won't bother the handgun all that much shooting those few rounds. Myself,I'd drop the +P and stick with the 115gr or 235's.

There shouldn't be any problem shooting +P in your Shield in moderation. I would shoot enough to verify reliability and then carry a good +P round. I wouldn't have any problem carrying standard 9mm SD rounds either. I also don't think there is a significant difference out of the short barrel.

thank you all for your replies. puts my mind at ease. next trip to the range, i'll try a couple just to see how it goes. i already have the +p ammo, so that's what i'll be carrying unless the gun doesn't like them, but from what you guys are saying i'm sure it will be fine. this is the nicest gun i've owned next to my sig 229, and this thing might actually top that. the best trigger of any weapon i've had, very controllable recoil, and i love having a finish on a gun that doesn't rust from sweat finally. i had a lovely time shooting this gun, probably did some of the best shooting i've ever done in my 13+ years of using firearms. thanks everyone.

I bought a box of Critical Duty a few weeks ago. After getting home I pulled up their website and discovered the Critical Duty is better suited for long barrel 9's. The Critical Defense is for short barrel 9's. So I'm not using them right now.

are they the 135gr? i wonder if that's the reason, the heavier the grain the more it's suited for longer barrel weapons?

+P is just fine.

The price will seem quite cheap when you have to depend your life on it.

You NEED to cycle it through your firearm though, to make sure that it shoots accurately, and that the firearm (and mags) will feed it properly. I wouldn't carry anything if I hadn't shot at *least* one box through the pistol.

Then, after carrying it around for a couple of months, I fire it out at a range session and load up fresh (what's in the pistol and the spare mag). Lastly, I never carry a round that has been chambered more than once....but that may be going a tad overboard for some. (just keep a little pile and use it when I go to the range)

Don't skimp on your defensive ammo.

Tracy

i have no problem spending money on good defensive ammo. i just gotta find the time to go shoot it. i don't have a range close to me that lets me shoot my ammo and not theirs and it's outdoors so until it warms up a bit, i'm holding off.

Clark Brothers in Warrenton VA?
I know it's a big country, but as it is kind of unusual, thought I would take a stab at it. LOL

The manuals states more maintenance. It does not say you should not. It says you must not shoot +p+.

If you're asking about the outdoor range, no, it's Wexford, PA. State Gamelands. And to Chris, yeah, i re-read the manual and seen that. supposed to be somewhat nice this weekend but i got stuff to do and don't know if i'll be able to find some range ammo locally to take with me also, so until another day unfortunately.
