This thread is almost three years old, and still being added to. There are a steady stream of similar threads to this one, and replacement RSA's are identical to failed ones. Call S&W CS and the response is indicative of a company decision to ignore the issue as long as its possible. Probably take lawyers representing dead clients before a fix is made.

Default M&P 9 sent back for recoil spring

We Shield owners do ourselves no favors by giving S&W an easy and cheap way to ignore this issue, by simply mailing another example of a flimsy product.

When i talked to S&W all they wanted was to send me a new spring, I felt the entire gun should be looked at to get a clean bill of health if possible. I fired approx 200 rounds and the spring fails, i am a little " concerned ".

Yeah, that figures. That's why I'd fain ignorance, and say the slide is jambed or something, if either of mine ever fails again.

In the meantime, it's cold enough here in upstate South Carolina that we can wear a jacket, and the single-stack is unnecessary.

I bought a new Ford Taurus awhile back & had a tire problem (most likely due to the poor state of Michigan roads). I took my car in & was told they didn't have the correct tire in stock, but they'd have it that afternoon. They didn't tell me that they where to busy making cars & all the tires were going on new cars, but don't worry we'll get you a new tire when we can. I have a problem with any part not being available on a currently produced item-especially a wear part that has had past failures. Glock recommends replacing the RSA's in their pistols at regular intervals depending on round count and guess what you can buy them off Amazon. I bought a Shield last summer. Right now no problem, but I am sorry I didn't purchase another brand & will be selling it. It seems that S&W may be more concerned with making a million pistols. I'd feel differently if that OEM part were readily available. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't really care.
You can thank a concept called 'Just in time' delivery for that. The factory gets what it needs, when it needs it. No inventory. They've got to keep that line running. No time for your 'spare parts'.

Bought a new 45 Shield this morning.
Upon arriving home I disassembled to clean and lubricate prior to firing......
Guess what ? when I removed the RCA there was no end cap ? or if there was I can't find it. anyway the new gun is useless as the RCA is not complete. I have another shield and 4 M&Ps so know what the assy is supposed to look like. Of course it is Saturday so everyone is closed.
I get to spend the whole weekend looking forward to trying to contact someone at S&W to get a replacement. I would not think that the whole gun has to be sent it. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam.

Not having parts available is a common problem because of JUST IN TIME MANUFACTURING.

Nobody carries inventory anymore because if you do you have thousands of dollars tied up and your books look worse for it due to the way accountants evaluate financial health.

It is a huge problem for companies. Where I work, we can't ship product sometimes because parts are delayed. When everything works your parts are delivered on time and raw material or parts come in and finished goods go out the door.

You don't keep many spares on hand to fix customer problems. We had a repair last week that will have to wait until the new year due to part availability. Parts go to NEW ORDERS first then customers with extended warranties then paid repairs.

I imagine S&W has parts for the production line but NOT for repairs.

I just had this happen today with my 9mm Shield. Waiting to hear back from S&W.

Those of you that have received replacements are they any better than the originals?

I saw no noticeable change between the original and the replacement. I'd been hoping that the problem was solved because there had been no complaints for an extended period, but the problem has resurfaced again, judging from recent posts in this forum.
I'd think the odds of the replacement assembly having a problem are the same as for the original that was installed.

The replacement I received appeared identical. However, keep in mind that was 3 2/3 years ago.

I called them 2 1/2 weeks ago and was told same thing. We will ship it but unknown when that will be because it's on back order. Brand new shield performance center. The shield has great quality control until you throw in the ****** rsa into the mix!

2 1/2 weeks and still nothing. That's ridiculous. Sure glad I have other guns to carry.

I'm thinking it's going to be a safe queen or just used for plinking. Not sure I can trust it anymore.

Oh, man. Not this problem again! Way back in 2015, I started a thread describing my frustrating-then-bizarre-then-almost-amusing experience trying to get a proper Shield RSA. Since then, I figured S&W had finally gotten control over this problem, so I'm sorry to learn that Shield owners are once again having to deal with defective RSAs. Hopefully S&W will resolve it for you quickly, so you won't to have to go through what I went through.

However, if you are perverse enough to want to know what a worst-case scenario regarding RSA replacement looks like, read this:

Shield RSA one more time

Good Luck!

They've been having heat treatment problems with their spring supplier. It shows up more commonly is Shields because of how much stress such a small spring endures. Add in the fact that due to last in first out usage a defective spring can be in the parts bins for months before being installed and there's no way to see which individual springs have been effected until they fail. If they really have run out of recoil spring assemblies maybe the problem will get better, or not.

The problem here is with the assembly coming apart. Are you saying that S&W buys the entire assembly from another company?

This is an old thread with an old problem.
Happened to me this weekend.
Bought the new gun Friday Jan 2017 and Saturday the RSA fell apart.
I'm sure S&W will make it right but as old as this gun is the problem should not be a problem.

This is kinda like a former mayor of a Capitol city saying the crime rate in his city would be low if you take out the murders.
I can't say the QC on my Shield 45 was any kinda of good if the RSA (not breaks due to stress or bad metal) falls apart.

My point was other than the RSA issues, the shield is A quality built firearms. when you outsource the RSA like S&W does you don't have control of the part/product and S&W takes for granted that they are up to par of the quality.
Either way it's an on going issue that S&W apparently doesn't want or feel the need to fix it. When you manufacture and sell I've 1 million shields I would imagine the failure rate of the RSA would have to be at least 10% before accepting there is an issue with a part.

I just purchased the M&P Shield 45 last week and took it to the range today. I fired 200 rounds and the gun performed perfectly. Got home and disassembled it for cleaning. When I took the guide rod out the main spring popped right off. I called S&W and the tech just asked for my name and address and told me he would put one in the mail for me today. So, I was happy with the response from S&W but really disappointed in the quality of the RSA. I did asked the tech if this was a common problem and he tpld me its a very infrequent problem. After reading the forum it seems that it is a bit more frequent than what they are saying. If the replacement RSA has not been redesigned I'm concerned this may be a recurring problem. For those folks that have received replacements, have you run into the same problem with the replacements failing? Anyone know of an after market replacement that foesn't fall apart?
Other than that, it was a pleasure to shoot.
