Default Shield Recoil Spring Fell Apart

Ok, so I took my Shield (40) to the range this weekend for the first time. When I got home I took it apart to clean it, and when I tried to reassemble it (like I did when I first got it). The Recoil spring wouldn't seat on the barrel properly. It was like it was about 1/4" too long. I pressed on the end of the spring (the part that rests against the barrel) a bit, and it would not budge. I took it out to make sure I had inserted it correctly, and the cap on the forward end of the spring broke off.

I called Smith and Wesson this morning, and they are shipping me out a new recoil spring assembly, I was just curious if anyone else has had this same problem.

Does anyone know how to track an order from Smith and Wesson. They gave me an order number, but I can't find any place on their website to check the status?

That may be coming by USPS. In that case, the part will be there before you can track it. UPS or Fed-X you should get or already have a tracking code. Look in your junk mail.

I had a similar problem, but not exactly the same. My recoil spring came apart as well, but it was the exterior spring. Just popped right off. I had taken the gun apart to clean it, set the recoil spring aside and a few minutes into cleaning the gun I hear a "pop" from where I put the spring down. It wasn't moving, nobody was touching it and it had been sitting in the same spot for a few minutes. Very weird. But, Smith and Wesson sent me a new one. It was shipped USPS and arrived in a few days.

I have not gotten a tracking number (only the order number) so perhaps it is comming USPS. I will check my spam folder just in case. It was kinda strange when I called. I had previously completed the warrante registration for my pistol on the S&W website. When I called in I gave them the serial number (which I would have thought would have brought up all my information), but they still asked me for my address. The rep initally came back and told me it was an invalid address. The first letter of our street is a "D" and he was entering it as a "V". Easy mistake to make over the phone, but still if the address was sitting right in front of him that shouldn't have been a problem.

How long ago was that. When I called on Monday, they indicated that they were running behind and it might be as long as 2-3 weeks.

I had the same problem. There seems to be no way to link an account you set up on the website to a phoned-in order number.

The only way I was able to check was to call in again and have the service person look up the order number. In both cases, my parts had finally shipped a day or three before, and arrived a day or so later.

I don't really mind calling them, even if there may be a bit of a wait, as I've always found them friendly and helpful.

I never got a tracking number either. I was actually told over the phone that they won't get a tracking number because it's sent USPS. But, it arrived quickly.

And I had my issue almost a month ago. They didn't mention anything about a shipping delay at the time, but did say that if I were to send the gun in for repair it would be up to 3 weeks.

I was disassembling my Shield today prior to cleaning it when, to my complete surprise, the recoil spring shot out and landed in front of me.

I'm guessing that I'm missing a part of a part of a part that broke off. I'll call S&W on Monday.

Yeah, your missing the little black button end that you can see from the front of the gun when the spring is properly seated in the gun.

The exact same thing happened to my Shield 9 after approximately 600 rounds.

I sent an email to Smith with pictures of the spring. They replied the next day stating they would mail a replacement. The replacement arrived in about a week via USPS.

Had the same thing happen to my Shield 40.

Outer recoil spring came off the guide rod.

I hadn't even shot the gun yet. Just disassembled it after bringing it home from the local FFL.

After the recoil spring broke, I was a bit disappointed. This gun has never been shot. Brand new, just out of the box.

So, my initial impressions are mixed. I think I'm going to really like the trigger feel. The size, style, and overall feel of the gun is just what I was hoping for after reading many reviews.

BUT, the slide release is very very stiff. I mean so stiff I can't drop it with my thumb. I have stong hands. I'm talking "REALLY? They shouldn't let them out of the factory like this stiff." I realize this should remedy itself after breaking in. S&W claims this is due to the melonite coating on the slide. I see on youtube some guys recommend polishing the slide release tab edge with 1000 grit sand paper.

I will say, S&W customer service was very nice to deal with. I told them my recoil spring / guide rod assembly broke. They asked for my address and are sending me out a new one. They estimate 1.5 weeks to arrive?

When you guys got the replacement back did you notice any improvements to the recoil spring assembly to stop the breaking of them?

This problem doesn't render the gun immediately inoperable, right?
Like if the Glock plastic guide rod breaks, you can still shoot the gun.

My Shield didn't come with a slide release.

Neither did my other M&P's.

Are you sure yours has a slide release?

I bet yours has a slide lock, a little lever on the left side that you can push up to catch the slide when you don't have a mag in it, or you can use it to drop the slide lock when it has an empty mag and you pull back on the slide.

Ahhh, the great slide lock, or slide release debate?

I'm assuming S&W refers to it as a slide stop?

Thanks for your help with that.

If your Shield recoil assy. breaks...is the gun still shootable? Or is it immediately rendered inoperable?

Personally, I don't mess with slide releases unless I'm manually locking back the slide. If I just want to release the slide after inserting a magazine, I just pull back on the slide and release. This way I don't have to learn the exact finger reach of all the different pistol slide releases.

When I pulled off my slide everything still appeared captured. It came apart when I started to remove it.

Glad to know if your Shield recoil assembly breaks while firing, you can continue shooting.
There are some pistols out there where the end of the spring can pop out the front leaving you with a non-functional gun (and possibly dead)

Exactly the same problem when cleaning my gun today. I believe the screw came out at the range. The gun was still completely functional until I disassembled it for cleaning. Missing screw on the muzzle end.

I am hoping I can get this resolved this coming week as I am heading out on Oct 7 for a motorcycle trip and I want my Shield with me.

Was thinking about picking one up. But RSA's falling apart, I think I'll pass. Not a confidence builder. Good luck.

You oughta see a Glock RSA fly apart when you reassemble it incorrectly. It'll put an eye out. After reading this forum for several years, and being a member for a couple, I am firmly convinced that a significant number of the problems described are user induced. I don't have a Shield, but after I get my Glock 43 and my Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle, it's next. . . .

Let's see... How many different individuals (not the same 'me too' people who post in every thread) have posted about having a Shield RSA problem (of ANY kind)? 2 Dozen maybe?
How many different individuals have posted about it actually coming apart? A Handful?
(Of the 4 different S&W based Foums out here, This S&W Forum has the most threads about the Shield RSA)

When you consider the the Shield has just passed the 1 Million units mark, 24 units having RSA problems comes to 0.0024% (1/4 of 1%?).

Yeah... Quite an epidemic... You shouldn't take a gamble on getting one.

Like Rob said not that many issues, I got my RSA because I wanted a spare to have on hand! 600+ rounds no problems! I would buy another Shield and I also carry it as my CCW

The same here...over 3,500 rounds through my 6-month old 9mm Shield with original RSA. No problem, no bends, no issues. Never rotated the RSA a "certain way" during reassembly. Just always made sure it was installed per the manual, aligning it properly and assuring it was fully seated all the way down on the barrel notch and centered--from day 1.

Default Shield 9mm Recoil Spring assemble ROD

I am deeply disappointed in this Firearm.. All the adds makes it look so good once you buy it, it starts breaking apart . I just bought mine in 10/2015 only used it twice 165 rounds and the recoil spring assembly broke off.

I called S&M and they told me the item is in backorder. I looked all over the place and internet no one carries it.

What good of concealed firearm if they don't have spare parts.

My rating for this product is 2/10

So, S&W posts a pic boasting about the 1M made, but they don't have any RSA available to replace broken ones. Nice.

If you look on this forum you will find a source for an after market RSA. I believe it is a solid, stainless rod and you either send in your RSA and they reuse the spring or you put your spring on it.

I have had no love for the RSA but I don't categorize the Shield as a poor firearm. With a good RSA (and there are more of these than bad ones) the Shield is an amazing firearm.

Just as an aside, after I read about people's RSAs flying apart I check mine before tearing down. From what I heard, the black cap on the end will spin or be loose just before it fails. Before I field strip I lock the slide back and test that cap to see if it's tight. I know, I shouldn't have to do that but I do. I've had a replacement RSA, a new Shield 9 and my son's Shield 9 with good RSA's and there's no problems at all.

Not trying to convince people that there aren't issues out there but new owners or folks considering buying a Shield shouldn't judge the entire platform on one, replaceable part. Just my $.02

Seriously? Okay... The recoil spring assembly is exactly that, an assembled part. There's a solid rod, milled or cast, doesn't make much difference, double springs are then installed on the rod, and then a plate on the end that holds the springs captive. That plate is, I presume, welded to the end of the rod in the final phase of assembly.

I've looked at mine and can't really see how it's done, but I'm not a machinist or mechanical engineer. Welds fail sometimes, and I'm sure that sometimes they just aren't really applied right for some reason. If the plate is holding, I'm not sure how S&W QC can spot the problem. But there's a million Shields running around out there and a handful of reports of this sort of failure. You'll never find a gun that doesn't have some horror stories posted about it. It's a little machine. Machines break sometimes.

This thread citing this issue is from 2013. As PirateJim said, there are now more than 1,000,000 Shields manufactured. Problems with the RSA are VERY uncommon, and mostly from the past.

Maybe so... but it IS STILL happening. It happened to me. It's not a problem of the past.

My first Shield from 2013 = No RSA problems.
New Shield in 2015 = Bent RSA disc.

Waiting on a backorder replacement from S&W.

With all due respect, the bent RSA disk is a different issue from the RSA "falling apart" issue. Since you have had a Shield for a few years I won't suggest the bent disk is an issue of incorrect assembly, but that is a suspected cause in some cases.

and... the Bent Disk does not (seem to) impair the function of the RSA. There are a few here that continued to put several Hundred flawless rounds through their Shields, while waiting for their new RSA to ship.

Took the words right outa my mouth. Yeah, yeah, I know, it's supposedly just a microscopically small percentage, but we can't be sure of that,at all, since a very small percentage of M&P owners are actually involved in this thread.
This could easily be a MUCH more wide spread problem, only S&W knows for sure.
And all I know is that I'm reading post after post of, "yep, happened to me too".
And, the fact that the part is back-ordered is also curious. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear that there's a recall on this part somewhere down the line.
I'm in the middle of selling another toy to get a Shield as we speak, but I'm thinking I'm gonna put that on hold for a minute.

Yeah, mine fell apart as I tried to clean for the first time after one shooting session. Brand new, 2 days old. Called on 12/11 and stated they had some in stock but no receipt yet.

Has anyone tried a stainless steel guide rod assembly like this?

Regardless of what anyone says here there's a problem. Not so much with the RSA failing but the fact that there doesn't seem to be any readily available. I get the fact that things aren't perfect & sometimes there might be a part failure on anything. I bought a new Ford Taurus awhile back & had a tire problem (most likely due to the poor state of Michigan roads). I took my car in & was told they didn't have the correct tire in stock, but they'd have it that afternoon. They didn't tell me that they where to busy making cars & all the tires were going on new cars, but don't worry we'll get you a new tire when we can. I have a problem with any part not being available on a currently produced item-especially a wear part that has had past failures. Glock recommends replacing the RSA's in their pistols at regular intervals depending on round count and guess what you can buy them off Amazon. I bought a Shield last summer. Right now no problem, but I am sorry I didn't purchase another brand & will be selling it. It seems that S&W may be more concerned with making a million pistols. I'd feel differently if that OEM part were readily available. I'll probably get flamed for this, but I don't really care.

Discussions like this always happen on handgun forums. On this RSA or Guide Rod assembly issue, there was a post from September of 2013, then 2 years and 3 months passed before Gonerydin posted that the same thing happened to him. With complete respect to all who are having problems it just seems to me that the more than 2 years with no one posting about it suggests that the problem is rare. How many of you who have the problem came here after googling "Shield problems"? just wondering.....no disrespect intended, but it's a fine firearm.

+1 BigDog.
You have to read these threads with some sense of context. Hundreds of thousands of Shields have been produced since the original posting, and S&W (like any decent manufacturer) rolls product improvements into the line if they want to stay in business. Occurrences of this problem today are highly unusual.

I have a 9mm NTS Shield I bought Thanksgiving weekend, build date of April 2015. It is now my EDC.

I am 67 and stopped bragging on hand strength long ago, but, I can rack the slide and lock it back normally AND just a few minutes ago loaded the 8th round into the 8 round magazine with bare hands !?!

The pistols has about 600 rounds of mostly cheap, but name brand ammo through it with ZERO problems of any kind. Also ate my EDC ammo which is Hornady Critical Defense 115g.

I'm happy (and honest)....wish everyone was.

By the way, anyone who has trouble racking a Shield should try the Ruger SR9c. They won't be able to move the slide, let alone lock it back.

So... Their have been a couple Dozen RSA problems over several years, but you have a problem with RSAs being back ordered, due to everyone getting spooked over those few RSA posts and buying spares (even though they probably wouldn't need them for thousands of round down the road).

YOURS has been problem free (like the 900K+ others out there), but because a part is back ordered, you're sorry you didn't buy something else and are planning on selling yours?
Would you feel better if several Hundred RSAs, or several Thousand RSAs had failed, but there were plenty of Spare RSAs in stock to be had?
Seems kinda Bass Ackwards, but to each his own, I guess.

Default M&P recoil spring failure

After returning from the range and cleaning the gum the cap at the end of the spring was gone completely.
The dealer felt there might something more than just the recoil spring and suggested I send the gun to be checked out.
Will post what they tell me when the gun is returned.

Even if it is "just the recoil spring", I would send my entire Shield back, so that the monetary impact to the company hopefully increases to the point that they stop ignoring it, and redesign the RSA.

We Shield owners do ourselves no favors by giving S&W an easy and cheap way to ignore this issue, by simply mailing another example of a flimsy product.

It would be interesting to start a serial number list on RSA failures. I wonder if the problem could be from one lot of RSAs with a QC problem.
