Is this it? Is it really happening? Is the nonsense over?
Guys & Gals,
I see 10rnd mags for compacts available on S&W's website, my LGSs tell me they're getting more stuff than in the past while...
Can it be that the nonsense is starting to dissipate?
I've never been through something like this before, too young... Can anyone else predict if we've actually bottomed-out and are looking at the beginning of the upswing back to normal?
What comes first? Firearm availability or ammo availability? What's the best indicator?
Fingers crossed...

Mags are back in stock at places like 44mag and MidwayUSA, so I'd say that's a good sign, to start.
I think next would be the firearms themselves (except AR-styles still), and then ammo (as ammo is the cheapest, and you almost always need ammo).

Things looking somewhat better, My LGS and Academy Sports have gotten some ammo and guns in. But there are still people panic buying and flipping for profit.

Agreed. Trucks arrive at the 3 wally world superstores in my area every Tuesday night and it is hit and miss on 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 ACP and .22 LR. Got lucky last week and scored 3 Win white box value packs of 9mm. Lately, they NEVER have .22 LR and forget .223 Rem.
The new assault weapons ban came out of the Senate committee last week (Approved 10-8, along party lines) and may reach the full Senate in April. IMO, this madness will not stop until this bill is dead. Even if it dies, the POTUS may chose to fuel the fire with various executive orders...

I would not bet a box of 22s on it, or a $5.00 bill. I give the current crisis at least another 6-12 months. When supplies do ever become completely available, look for everything to cost a lot more.

I hope you are right. Maybe people have run out of money and/or credit?
I was in a small gun store a couple weeks ago and they had a few AR's that were right under $900 but did not have any ammo. A larger gun store in my area has a steady supply of ammo(sells out quickly), quite a few upper end AR's and a reasonable supply of handguns. They are so busy many times there is no where to park.

When I can go on Powder Valley's web site, and find the powder, primers and bullets I want in stock, than maybe I will think it is over.

I know some of the local stores i my area are keeping ammo in the back for people who buy a gun. I have noticed on some of the local classifieds that ammo has gotten a little cheaper. 9mm for a bout 50 cents a round when before people were trying to get 35 for a box of 50

This is just a lul in the storm. Weapons will catch up because there isn't much ammo. Then ammo will catch up and go nuts again. People are still too stock crazy yet. I'm GLAD stores FINELY started putting limits on how many. That will buffer the "wave" some what.
I'll bet if the "Ammo Fairy" would fill every store over night to there old normal levels of two years ago. ...EVERYTHING would be gone before 9-10:A the next day and there would be riots, traffic jams on the national news with breaking stories...

The walmarts around here have people lining up DAILY at about 5 AM waiting for the 7 am shift guy for ammo. Its pretty sad really. I stopped in my local store at 6am two days in a row just to see it on my way to work and there was 17 people on day one and 11 on day two. Both days no ammo came off the truck.. Craziness.
I miss the days when I could walk in and drop a few hundred on ammo, not likely to ever see those days again. Folks will be a little wiser and stock up or hoard if you will in fear of the next tragedy putting them out of commission. I also fear the prices for will never be anywhere near what they used to be if/when things ever do get back to normal. We shall see

You can beat the bushes and find expensive defense ammo, but I have been unable to find cheap target ammo anywhere. I think this scare is more serious than 4 years ago. Legislation is getting passed or threatened at the state and federal levels. I think plentiful ammo in 1 year is optimistic, but one only can hope. I hate hanging on to a gun club membership and not being able to use it. I will anyway because most of the clubs in my area have closed membership or doubled their fees.

Not quite yet, at least around here.
My LGS said it's still next to impossible for him to
restock his bare shelves with any new guns from
the various manufacturers. Have'nt seen any ammo
other than 30-30, 7mm Mag, shotgun shells, etc...
I'm have hopes it will end by summer but not counting
on it yet.

I'd say not yet as well. I think things are getting better but when I see mag at 44mag for $59 and then check to see that they are still selling on eBay for $100, it tells me there is still a lot of panic buying going on. If people would stop paying a dollar a round for .223 or 60 cents to a dollar for 40 S&W, the gougers selves would fill up and they would start to lower their prices.
Here in CA Big 5 hasn't raised their prices even though they are getting limited quantities. That tells me that whole sale prices are fairly stable. It's the hoarders and gougers causing the problems.
I also picked up a Mini 14 a couple of weeks ago. There were none to be found in Dec, Jan & Feb. There are several stores around here that have them now. Things are looking up but it's going to be a while

It wasn't very long ago that the local store was selling it for $5.00 a box. 50 rounds of new factory FMJ reloadable brass cased stuff!
(Of which I'm about out, finally. But that may be a good thing, as even $13 a box still hurts my feelings.)

You talk of "nuts". Ammo unlike apples does not go bad on the shelf. Why do you not have a supply put up for a rainy day?
With the gun friendly world we live in you must look past the end of your nose.
People who purchase ammo from the scalpers are the problem. If you would not buy, they will do something else.
If you are out of ammo, it might alright to buy. But to buy and go to the range, well that fits the definition of "nuts".

It's definitely regional.
You won't find an AR on the shelf around here. And ammo is nonexistent.
But some guys down south see AR's in stock for $900??? I could drive down, buy that $900 AR and bring it back to WI and sell it for $1500.
And that's what people are doing.
The best indicator of where the frenzy is at is on the internet, where the market is nationwide. Pmags have fallen from $80 each to $21 each in the last month. That means everyone willing to pay more than $21 for a pmag already has all they want, and the prices start to come down to sell.
Something else to get mad about, the average price of gas 14 years ago was $1.20 a gallon.

I was able to pick up about 1000 rds of 22lr over the weekend at BPS, and did not over pay for it.... Although, the ammo aisle was like a shark feeding frenzy, and I am sure it was all gone within an hour or so.
Picked up a 525 Federal box for $20.95, and 9 boxes of American eagle for $2.29 per box of 50.
I think the craziness is slowing down, but it's still at a near fever pitch.

Seems like a poor indicater. I mean, were Shields readily available prior to December in upstate NY? They weren't anywhere else.
I'd say bulk 22 ammo being consistently available at walmart is the best indicator that it's over.

Fox News Nuts and Scare Tactics

I find this particularly disturbing, given the current political atmosphere and assaults on the Second Amendment. If I had a box of ammo for every person I know who voted for anti Second Amendment politicians, yet they, themselves are hoarding firearms and ammo, I'd never need to buy another box of ammo. If it were not for such individuals, there wouldn't be a shortage!
The scare and ensuing panic buying started as soon as the anti-gun politicians exploited the Newtown shooting in order to once again advance their longstanding anti Second Amendment agenda. This will never be "over" as long people subscribe to the thought that nobody is ever going to take away our guns in this country and keep re-electing those who definitely will take away our unalienable Constitutional right, given the opportunity.
As for the ammo and gun scalpers; in my opinion, they are not Capitalists, they are simply greedy individuals, lacking good judgement and morals.
I personally take offense to a person on a firearms enthusiast forum blaming his inconvenience on the only national media network which supports the Second Amendment, and calling them nuts.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way.
Thank You.

The buying started in November 2008, panic buying December 2012, and will end November 2016. Get it?
God Bless America, again.
Google: 'The Harbinger' and 'Four Blood Moons'.

I googled those references and didn't find any .22 or .223 ammo.

My local Dunham's seems to be getting "relatively" larger quantities of ammunition in, but certainly not meeting demand. Picked up a 250 UMC Mega Pack of .40S&W 180 and a couple boxes of 9mm 124 Blazer for $76.49 and $12.74 each (After a 15% coupon.) this week, so I'm not too unhappy.
Yes, they limit quantities, and only one Mega Pack per customer, otherwise I'd have gotten two. I haven't tried the 9mm Blazer before, so I just got the two boxes to test, and besides, it left more for others. They also had boxes of a slightly more expensive 9mm, and Mega Packs of .45 ACP this week.
They seem to get 5 Mega Packs of a caliber per shipment if they get them at all, but none of the popular calibers last more than a day in the stores. (Usually not for more than a few hours...)
Still no .22LR, .223 or 5.56. .22LR I'm not worried about, as I have plenty, but any outtings with my M&P15 are going to be very limited...

Lost Lake, and others who read this post:
The Google references above were not for ammo -
(see gunsamerica.com for that)...
...but the references was for what is happening to America and what is beginning starting TODAY (3/22/13)!

Well if the world is ending again... I really want to stock up on ammo.
All these end of the world predictions usually include an address where I can send my money to help me repent. I guess I'm going to wait until the earth starts burning or the lakes start on fire or something before I quit paying my taxes.
Until that time all I can do is be as good a person as I can be. That's all any of us can do.

Was able to pick up 3 100rd box's of Winchester Super X
the other day at WM. First 22 cal I've seen this year.
They had some box's of Winchester 12ga 100 rd. They
where going for $24.98. The 22 cal were $6.98
They had a 2 box limit.
Was able to talk the guy into giving me 3 box's since I
live out of the area.
I check around 4 stores per week when I'm in town.
They also had 40 cal/30-06/30-30/7mg/270/300mg
410ga.

Amen! I'm starting to see some things are becoming more available, and private party AR prices seem to be coming down. Was in a gun shop last week and they had ARs on the rack. I didn't ask for prices. Checked my local Walmart again last week. They couldn't give me an idea when they even anticipated seeing more .22LR, and said they understood that the factories had pushed .22 production aside to keep with the demand for .223 and 9 mm. Strangely, they had a number of Winchester white boxes of 7.62 x 39.

I don't think so. I was at Cabela's today in PA and there was almost no ammo at all. Zero 22lr and 40 but I was lucky to grab some 9mm - the shelf was empty but after my kids and I grabbed a snack we followed the guy who was bringing some 9mm out of the back. He had about 40 boxes and he basically just handed it out in the aisle - it never even sat on the shelf. The magazine aisle was 99% empty as well - there were 2 XD 45 mags and a single ruger 9mm mag and that was it - the rest of the aisle was completely bare. The two gun shops with ranges in my area won't even sell you ammo unless you shoot it at the range, they are that tight.

Yeah, like Fox is the only media outlet broadcasting scare tactics.

I just returned from a trip to Idaho to visit my brother. I walked into a small gun store in Grangeville Idaho which is about 75 miles from Lewiston. Not much out there in the way of big towns or people. I asked if they had any 9mm range ammo and they said they did. I respected the fact that they support their small community and I bit my tongue and asked if they had 5 boxes. I did not want to be the out of town hoarder that came in to clean them out. I don't know how much they had but they were probably limited on their stock. I picked up 5 boxes of PMC 9mm fmj and felt fortunate .

As far as seeing mags on S&W site...doesnt mean they have it. I place an order at 5 am this morning when I saw that it showed Shield mags in stock again. Ordered two with Overnight shipping. It took my order, sent me an email confirmation, but no shipping confirmation. Called S&W and the sales guy told me that they are on backorder. When I told him it said in stock on the website he said that the website is not connected to their inventory system and that there is probably a FOUR MONTH backlog still on mags. So, all he did was change my shipping to standard and said he could not give me any kind of lead time, but that I should not expect to see them any time soon....

I travel all throughout Michigan and the madness is most assuredly not over. No 9mm anything, anywhere... not even overpriced. No guns. No ammo. No nothing.
I went three places in three metro areas in the last two days and I saw 10 boxes of .38 special wad cutter and some .45 acp. That's it. Tired of this.

When I ordered bullets from Bayou Bullets, I was told 6-8 weeks at least, finally got a call today, a bit over 9 weeks, happily gave him a CC #, 2K of 124gr 9mm on their way. He is not taking any new orders for awhile till they get near caught up. Precision Delta which is my other supplier is 16 weeks out, putting an order in with them tomorrow.

If you're willing to get in line, early A.M. before store opening, you have a chance to get some.

I heard on the news that the Gum-mint has placed orders totalling over six billion (with a B) rounds of ammo, in various calibers, for "law enforcement". I'm beginning to wonder whether the gummint is just buying it up to keep it off the market. Six billion? That's alot of ammo!

I personally take offense to a person on a firearms enthusiast forum blaming his inconvenience on the only national media network which supports the Second Amendment, and calling them nuts.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Not even close.

Amen. I love it when people trash a network that they have never even watched because of the BS that their idols in Hollywood and the MSM feed them.
collins kenny35, why don't you try watching Fox a few times and then come back and tell me exactly who you think is "nuts", and why.

Supply and demand. Some say itll take 6 months to a year to recover. Ammo companies are maxed out in production. I reload and got enough stuff to hold me over a while. At least hopefully till this madness settles a bit.

It's the luck of the draw. I found a brick of .22 remington gold on cabelas website a week ago told a buddy and they were gone half hour later. Looked around tonight on line and must have looked at a dozen sites not 1 single box of .22 in. The only 9 I can find are factory reloads and they want amost 20 a box. Guns have come down but the ammo is going to be scarce for a long while I'm betting.
