Default New 40C...Suggestions???

I'm going to pick up my 1'st pistol on Wednesday. I've been trying to find a Shield for a while now but after much research I decided on the M&P 40C. It seems to be extremely versatile in that I can swap barrels to 9mm or 357, I can also use the FS 40 mag for a longer grip and I would assume a nicer feel (especially when firing rounds off at the range) to name a couple. I was hoping on getting some ideas from you more experienced folk on what add-ons may be a good idea to also buy if available when I go to purchase my new friend. Any input would be most helpful. Thanks in advance and I look forward to reading your thoughts.

The only add-on I have on my M&P's is night sights, and I have a Streamlight on my bedside .40.

You should have a couple mags, some say 3 some say a dozen, and I like to keep 500 rounds of ammo for every caliber I have.

Thanks for the input. Forgive my ignorance, I'm new to all of this, what's the difference between the sights already on the pistol and the night sights everyone seems to be talking about?

I would second the vote for night sights. I have the truglo tfo's and really like them. Also an Upula loader is very helpful, and makes getting that last round or two in a bit easier, especially if you grab some full size magazines. If you grab a full size mag don't forget you will need a grip adapter, xgrip makes them and can be had for about $12. Also if its your first handgun, get some cleaning supplies, like Hoppes#9 or my favorite frog lube, also consider where you will safe keep the weapon, and if you have kids etc a good safe is a must

Night sights typically use tritium to glow in the dark so you can see them either in the dark or very low light situations. Usually used on guns for defensive purposes rather than daytime or most competition shooting.

Two main variations use just the tritium capsules embedded in the sight, or a combination of tritium and fiber optics (TFO) to also give you enhanced viewing in the daylight. (Like the TruGlo TFOs mentioned above.)

D80 (I can't bring myself to type 'nizzle'),

Great buy! I just picked mine up on Saturday; it's a remarkable piece of engineering and craftsmanship. All your reasoning and logic for choosing this pistol makes perfect sense to me; it's exactly the same reasons why I opted for the compact versus a Shield. I even had a Shield in-hand at one point in my search for a 40c, but my better judgement prevailed and I stayed the course. The 40c is just a little chubbier than the Shield which is what gives you a higher double stack capacity of course, but it's not so much bigger that I found it to be so much less comfortable carrying IWB. I think if anything the weight of it might be a bigger factor; a few more rounds and a fatter slide equates to a noticeable difference, albeit small, if you carry all day.

Anyhow, I think it's great just as God made it. Granted I haven't shot mine yet, but I have other M&Ps and the stock sights aren't bad. I might opt for a set of TFOs before too long, but only if I can figure out how to move the stock sights to my M&P22 as an upgrade to it. The 22s come with a all-black rear sight, makes it look a little mushy downrange to me...

Anyhow, great buy and consider what the experienced guys tell you; they're smart and have good advice. Step one is definitely securing it and using it safely. It's a pretty aggressive toy, so definitely regard it..

Be safe...

Oh, and I know a place where you can get 15rnd mags for it, brand-new. PM me if you want the contact... I know a guy with a few if them he's trying to sell, I'll see if he'll ship to wherever you live...as long as its legal of course. We're from PA, pretty loosey-goosey here compared to most places...

Thanks for all the feedback so far everyone and I certainly appreciate the explanation of the sights. That helped clarify a few things.

I like having "clean" mags for SD and "dirty" mags that I can drop and not care for the range (shoot thru all of them at the range to make sure they work fine). A range holster and/or one to carry with. Light for night SD.

Just remember to read the manual inside and out. Clean it before you shoot it (saves most problems that "could/can" come up). I highly recommend using Frog Lube as per it's instructions. Keep any lube away from the fireing pin. It sounds like you are good to go. Stay Safe and get some training to aid in your safe shooting. Hard to get bad habbits,if you learn the right way first.

I just picked up a 40c too from a private sale for the same reason. I'm super excited. I love the look and feel. Now, the hunt for ammo begins.

Just got back home with my new .40C!!! Bought it from a fairly LGS. Can't wait to get it all cleaned and lubed, then off to the range.

At this time I'd go for the night sites. Magazines from S&W are rarer than hen's teeth.

I have a 40C on order & when I paid for it I figured I could save enough money to get a .357sig barrel, a 9MM barrel, a couple of 9MM mags & a 40 FS magazine or two while waiting the 3 months they said it would take to get here. It's been over 3 months by a few days & I've heard that the wait for the mags would be even longer. What hurts is I've got the money for everything I want. I'll be happy to just get the gun. Maybe I'll buy a few holsters for it.

Geez...the wait time for just the add-ons is crazy!! I'm glad I found my Compact in stock. If you haven't already, you should look into the IWB holsters by N82. They look pretty sick and have amazing reviews by everyone that owns one.

I have the TFO sights and a crimson trace grip laser on mine and carry it every day in a crossbreed supertuck deluxe IWB holster. I like the sights because I can find the gun in the dark and know how it is laying on the nightstand and the ct laser has performed perfect. I also bought a single Blackhawk mag holder and put it on my belt sideways and have a full size mag in it. My gun has a safety and I cut off one side to make room for the grip laser

That's a really good point about being able to see the TFO sights at night. I didn't think about that.

They are brighter than I ever would have believed. Something I learned the hard way though is to check the lamps and make sure all three are lit before having someone beat them on with a hammer and drift.I think a gunsmith may have damaged my front but I got it replaced free. If you show the installer all three are lit then they will know that they damaged the sight.
This is the mag case I like ..I do wear it horizontal and don't even know it is there .I carry a full size 40 mag without a rubber sleeve. The sleeve just adds bulk and after I shoot 11 rounds and put the extra mag in I doubt I will even notice.
