Default M&P 40 S&W to 9mm Conversion w/ KKM Barrel

I have a new full-size M&P .40 S&W. I like the idea of having the option of two calibers in one pistol, so I bought a 40-9 conversion barrel from KKM Precision.

The conversion barrel did not work reliably with the .40 S&W magazines. The magazine wouldn't hold the 9mm rounds securely. Inserting the magazine was more difficult, cases ejected erratically and the slide wouldn't lock back after the last round.

I miraculously bought 2 new 9mm magazines at a reasonable price from a local individual. The conversion barrel works perfectly with 9mm magazines. Ejection of cases was consistent and out of the way.

It seems the M&P series is particularly well suited for a 40-9 conversion barrel since the extractor and ejector are the same for both calibers. The fit and finish of the KKM barrel is excellent. Easy drop in fit. Well worth the money. I'm pleased.

Where did you find the KKM barrel?

Thanks!

I ordered it direct from KKM Precision. Look under the .40 barrel options for 9mm conversion.

FYI, you can just order a factory barrel from S&W for half the price of the KKM. Just drop it in, get a magazine or two when you can.

I've heard of alot of people using the 40 S&W mags with the 9mm barrel. My experience is the same... bad feeding, ejecting, etc.

You very definitely need 9MM mags for a 9MM conversion of a .40 cal M&P. If you convert a .40 to .357sig you can use the same .40 cal mags. The same mags are used in M&P .40 cal & .357sig.

Some have used .40 cal mags with a 9MM conversion with mixed results. Use it only at the range & expect feed problems. Never use them for SD carry unless you have 9MM mags.

I shot 25 rounds of factory 9mm through the KKM conversion barrel and 9mm magazines this weekend and had perfect reliability. I also like the way the stainless barrel looks in the all black pistol. I'm pleased with this purchase.

Default Why conversion barrel?

Stupid question, but do you need a "conversion" barrel, like Storm Lake and KKM sell, or can you just get the 9mm OEM barrel (or 9mm barrel from Storm Lake and KKM and others) and slap it in? If so, why do they bother selling a conversion barrel? Thanks

Just get the barrel directly from S&W. It's about half the cost. Others sell conversion barrels because they can.

It may not matter much, but the 40-9 conversion barrel fits the M&P slide and breech face exactly. The factory barrel does not but is close enough. The conversion barrel may be more readily available for purchase as well. The M&P pistol is ideal for conversion since the 40 S&W and 9mm ejector and extractor are the same. Other pistols, like Glock, require a 40-9 conversion barrel to fit the slide.

I tried searching for this p/n on the S&W site and I am coming up with nothing.

I have a S&W M&P .40 I just purchased and I am interested in having the 9mm conversion so I have the option to use it.

Sounds like all you need is a barrel and swap it out. Seems like the best option is to buy some 9mm catridges as well. No spring etc is not needed then?

Thanks all!

Those are the right part numbers. They won't show up on the site because they don't sell them on the site. Call S&W to purchase.

Yes, barrel and magazines is all you need to swap out.

perfect.. this thread has everything I need to confirm my next purchase will be a M&P 40 range kit.

**as soon as this stupid Maryland background check bag log starts to decrease from the current 60+ days, and before the October 1st high capacity (anything over 10) mag law kicks in.

The 9mm oem barrel in my factory .40 has less wiggle than my .40 original barrel.

I'd like to purchase the .357 barrel. But I've yet to ever have seen .357 sig ammo ever! Where would I buy such?

Well, whenever stock comes back up, Walmart, Cabela's, Bass Pro, etc.

And you are in a rush to blow your ammo downrange huh? Did you try to order one recently, or are you going off of info from a couple of months ago?

Either way, for most, it's not a problem to wait for a barrel because ammo is in such short supply right now. Plus, why pay nearly double for something just for semi-instant gratification that will sit in a drawer or safe for the most part until ammo becomes available. If it were me, I'd rather pay OEM price and use the savings to buy something else.

My .40 S&W barrel is the one in the drawer. I am shooting more 9mm with the KKM conversion barrel because I have more 9mm ammo and reloading components.

Why did I pay more for a conversion barrel? - I can. It was available. It is an exact fit in the .40 slide. KKM makes great barrels - maybe more accurate than factory. I have more 9mm ammo than .40 available. The stainless barrel looks good in the all black pistol. I was able to find some new 9mm M&P magazines from a fellow club member for a reasonable price.

I'm glad some of you have had good results with the factory 9mm barrel. Nothing wrong with buying a conversion barrel.

That's great, S&W-Admirer. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's EVER anything wrong in buying aftermarket parts at all. In your case, it worked out well, you have the ammo, the magazines, and can reload. For others, not so much, so it's good for them to know that there are choices out there that will save them $, especially if they have to wait for magazines and/or ammo.

10 more quick rounds through my KKM 40-9 conversion barrel this afternoon after I finished teaching a CHL class. Flawless performance. Excellent accuracy. I'm using 9mm magazines.

Price is listed in post #11 above. Highly unlikely that they have any magazines right now.

Forgot to mention in my first post that the KKM 40-9 conversion barrel was a drop in fit.

You mentioned that in the last line of your original post. The stock barrel from S&W is also a drop in.

Just to let you all know, I have 357 MPC and drop in SW OEM 9mm and .40 barrels. Also purchased 2 9mm full size mags for ease for range use and 2 extra .40c mag which I color coded the barrel and mags to avoid loading mistakes. Oh yes absolutely seems that I purchased 3 different weapons and the ability and choice of ammo.
My EDC is the .357 SIG MPC Rowlette

Default Can you convert a 9mm to a .40?

Other pistols, like Glock, require a 40-9 conversion barrel to fit the slide.
Can you do a 9mm to a .40 with a new barell and a new mag?

No. Not easily. You could buy a 40 barrel and remove a very small amount of metal and make it fit. See the 9 to 40 Shield threads for information.

After all the ribbing for buying the KKM conversion barrel on this thread, I feel better after reading about all the accuracy problems with the factory 9mm barrel, especially the older ones. The KKM barrel locks up real tight, is excellent quality and has a better twist rate for the lighter bullets. By the way, KKM isn't listing M&P barrels on their website right now. The brushed stainless barrel looks great in the all black pistol. No regrets.

Shot 50+ rounds of Remington, Winchester and two different handloads through the 40-9 KKM conversion barrel. Feeding was 100% and accuracy was excellent when I did my part. The pistol shoots to the point of aim. BTW, the KKM barrel has the older style barrel design with the collar. The factory .40 barrel that came with the pistol has the newer design without the collar. Test fire date 12/12. The KKM barrel is the same diameter all the way down the outside the barrel unlike the slight cone design of the muzzle end of the S&W factory barrels. The trigger seems to be getting better each time I make a trip to the range.

Shot another 25 rounds of reloads through the KKM conversion barrel from a rest. Accuracy was excellent. Feeding and ejection were 100% with 9mm magazines.

Default New to this but looking for conversion as well

Hi all, I was looking to get a new M&P 40 but would like the ability to shoot 9mm due to cost of .40 ammo. I called S&W and was told that there 9mm barrel wouldn't work without modification due to misalignment of head plus any such work would void there warranty. So I asked about KKM barrel and they again said it would void warranty. I asked why don't S&W make an factory conversion kit but was told that most people would rather just buy 2 guns. Seems to me there would be a big demand for such a conversion kit from S&W. Some people may not want to buy both a 9mm and .40. At this point, I'm looking at a new Glock because they do offer a conversion kit that doesn't void there warranty from what I've been told. Sad, I may have to add a Glock to my collection which to this point has all been S&W.

It is a slight chance you take. I bought a M&P .40 FS and inspected and shot it enough with the .40 barrel to prove to my satisfaction that it was not problematic and probably wouldn't need warranty work. I would think S&W would have the prove the problem was due to a conversion barrel before it voided the warranty. If the problem wasn't barrel related, S&W would still have to fix it.

Before I shot the M&P with the conversion barrel, I thoroughly checked to make sure it fit properly. If the conversion barrel has a problem, KKM will take care of you on the barrel - maybe the pistol if the barrel caused the problem.

I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Glock will probably have the same policy. S&W wants to sell 2 handguns not 1.

Many on this forum just buy the factory 9mm barrel and have good results. I bought the KKM conversion barrel just to ensure good fit and function and because I have had good results with KKM barrels before.

The factory 9mm barrel actually works better than the aftermarket barrels do.

Anything you do will void the factory warranty. Polishing the trigger, filing the burr off the takedown lever, and yes, swapping out the barrel.

Hundreds, maybe thousands of M&P 40's are using M&P 9mm barrels, with hundreds of thousands of rounds fired with no problems.

As Nike says.... Just Do It!!!

Prove that statement. My KKM 40-9 barrel works 100% and is very accurate. It fits the breechface perfectly unlike a factory 9mm barrel which produces a slight gap at the top.

M&P 9mm barrels have been criticized for accuracy problems up until recently when S&W changed the twist rate and design.

Regardless of going with OEM 9mm or KKM Conversion, I assume were using S&W OEM 9mm mags?

Everyone has their own strong opinion either buy S&W OEM Barrel or KKM/Storm Lakes conversation Barrel. The people who spent a lot of money for KKM justity for what they spent or the ones who purchase OEM Barrel by S&W because it is by the manufacturer both have strong points. You need to do what you feel makes you comfortable and you will have great S&W before and after the change. I personally went with OEM route since the OEM guts have the same item numbers so I felt that as a manufacturer it customary to build transferable parts to keep cost down and more practical for quality control. If you research on this and other S&W forums your S&M
W brothers have shot thousands of rounds through OEM barrels with no ill effects and no accuracy problems. But again do what is best for you. It is your semi auto and only you who will practice with it. I personally convert my back to .357 for EDC. Rowlette

Not to throw another option into the mix but does anyone have thoughts or recommendations on Storm Lake's vs KKM conversions? From what I know, Storm Lake has standard rifling, matched grade barrel and ported/threaded options which can shoot lead, FMJ and reloads. The KKM has button rifling which they say is better but I'm not sure on matched grade barrel or if it's capable of firing lead, FMJ and reloads. Waiting on call back from KKM.

I had two CHL students shoot 50 rds through my M&P FS .40 with the KKM 40-9 conversion barrel and a 9mm magazine for the shooting qualification part of the class last Saturday (5/25/13).

The students experienced perfect feeding and function with all 100 rds fired.

Interestingly, I gave three inexperienced students the opportunity to handle my M&P FS and Glock 17 and choose the one to shoot during the CHL shooting proficiency test. Two chose my M&P and one chose the G17.

After the shooting test, I took the M&P apart and inspected the slide and conversion barrel. There was no unusual wear or damage to either since I started using the barrel.

BTW, I don't feel any need to justify the expense of buying a more expensive 40-9 conversion barrel over the stock S&W 9mm barrel. I am reporting on the performance of the KKM barrel for anyone interested. To each his own.

I have a new M&P .40 Pro with the KKM conversion 9mm barrel. I am using factory M&P 9mm mags and have all kinds of problems with. I have tried about 4 mags of ammo using two different factory 9mm mags and experienced all three types of failures; failure to feed, failure to eject and double feeds. I haven't tried it yet with the .40 barrel and .40 mags and ammo. I never had this with my G22 conversion. Help!

Sorry to hear about your problem. Does the barrel fit the slide well - not too tight or loose? Does the slide hand cycle okay with the KKM barrel installed? Shoot the pistol using the factory 40 barrel and see if the pistol is working okay otherwise.

You are probably going to have to call and possibly send it back to KKM.

I have had perfect reliability out of my KKM 40-9 conversion barrel. I'm sorry you have had a problem. Sounds like you are trying all the right things.
