I new to this forum so bare with me. I'm not really a new shooter but have been out of shooting for awhile. I got back into shooting a few months ago with a beretta neos 22. I have purchased a M&P 40c to be my EDC. I have shot about 150 rounds through it and it seems to be shooting low. If I line the top of the rear site up with the bottom of the front site and hold a bit high on the target it will hit the target. I'm shooting 186 gr Winchester fmj rounds. Was just wondering if any other .40c owners have had this issue? And as I said I've been out of shooting for awhile so I may be antisapating the recoil. My son also shot the gun and was shooting low as well. I do have plans to go shoot at a range that has an experienced instructer and let them shoot the gun and watch me shoot.

If you are using the pinky extension mags, stop. I have the same problem with them. It causes me to shoot low. I went to the flat bottom mags and have had no further problems. If you want to keep using the extension, practice keeping your pinky loose on the grip.

Are you also shooting to the left a little?


This is the proper sight alignment. Top of the front aligned with the top of the rear. Equal light on either side of front sight. Front sight in crisp focus.


Some people say to align the dots, but that is not right. Look at this pic:


As you can see, the dots don't look like they are aligned, but the top of the front and rear sights are lined up. This is the correct way even with dots.

I took this gentleman's advice 5 months ago and I'm not a pro but I hit what I aim at!
Rear sight out of focus, target out of focus, front sight clear as a bell. Top of sights aligned, bangs the 10 ring almost all the time. I am still shooting at 15 and 30 feet. Going to start focus on 7 yards soon. Don't get to the range as much as I would like.

Also because of not enough range time, I work on technique A LOT! Grip, finger pad on trigger etc...Trying to get the muscle memory thing down.

For the record. My mp40c was shooting just right. Went to a range with an instructor and after about 5 minutes he had me straightened out. Turns out I just wasn't use to a trigger like the mp40c has. This gun is as dead on as any gun. The more I shoot it the more I love it!!!
Also like shooting the 165gr better than the 180gr.

D-Hop get a pack of snap-caps. Load the gun up randomly (as random as loading it yourself can be) with the snap caps and real rounds. It will help you catch any pushing/pulling or weird trigger pull behavior. What also worked well for me was pull the trigger very slow.

Thanks. I will be getting some snap caps. While I was shooting with the instructor he noticed that when I was pulling the trigger slow was when I was shooting low. He had me start just slapping the trigger back and doing double taps and I was a on target. I do need to practice dry firing. Also putting the small back piece on the grip helped a lot also.

This is strange advice indeed. I've never heard of anyone getting better by slapping at the trigger. Still, the only thing that matters is hitting what you're aiming at. If that works for you then I say keep it up.

I would like to shoot some with you and see how this works for you.

When I was pulling the trigger slow I would over think and antisapate the recoil and push down on the gun which was causing me to shoot low. The trigger on my mp40c is a bit stiffer than I'm use to and I would even catch myself pushing down on the gun when pulling the trigger slow and let off before the gun fired. When slapping the trigger back I don't have time to over think it......if that makes any sense. As I said the more I shoot my mp40c the more I love it. I just need to get a little more comfortable with the trigger.

Yes, that makes perfect sense. However, I would suggest a different approach. With your gun empty, point the gun at a spot on the wall, but only an inch or two from it. Hard focus on the front sight and press the trigger. Because you are close to the wall, you will see any movement in the gun very easily.

Practice this with both types of trigger pull. It may take some practice, but most people find the slower press easier to control.

When I say "slower" I don't mean you should take a full minute to press the trigger. Just a consistent building of pressure until you get a surprise sear break. This can be done relatively quickly, but smooth is the key.

Again, and this is most important, you have to do what works for you. I'm just making a suggestion.

Also, consider putting an Apex Hard sear in your gun. This will drop the pull weight about in half. That will make it much easier to operate the trigger as well.

I totally agree with you. I do need practice with the trigger and I would be more on target with a smoother slower pull once I'm more comfortable with the trigger. I have heard of several people putting the apex Trigger on the M&P guns. That may be something I look into in the near future.
