Get a high thumbs forward grip and learn how to pull the trigger. Since this is your first auto, you're going to have to learn how to shoot an auto in general first because you don't shoot it like a revolver.
Decent video here on the grip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvmAYFsRc-I

I know it was just a mistake, they don't make automatic Shields.
Continue shooting though, you'll get the hang of the trigger.

*Concentrate on the front site.
*Remember to s-l-o-w-l-y squeeze the trigger using the pad of your finger.
*use a good firm grip on the gun but don't try to strangle the life out of it. I prefer the fingers of the support hand to be wrapped around the fingers of the shooting hand on the grip as apposed to a "cup and saucer" grip.
*Practice. practice, practice.

Buy a 22 Auto and practice. You are probably jerking the trigger, anticipating the shot or some combination. Dry fire it at a bullseye target a few hundred times to get the feel of the trigger break. Then, when you go to the range, have someone surprise load your mag with a dummy round somewhere in the mix so that you do not know when it is coming up and watch what your sights do very carefully when it goes "click" instead of "bang," and I think you will see the problem.
