Which M&P is Similar to Glock 19?
I am the proud owner of an M&P 22, M&P 9 FS, and an M&P 15-22. All feel great and shoot very good. Since getting the 15-22 the others haven't been fired much.
Sorry for the long story. The wife is looking to get her first gun and looking for some experienced advice. Naturally I'm an M&P fan. Advice from me is biased. I've read a lot and have seen reviews about the Glock 19. Is there an M&P equivalent to the Glock? Maybe another Smith model? She has shot both my M&P's but wants one she can call her own. Any advice would be welcomed. How about hearing from some female shooters as well.

9C is between a Glock 19 and 26 height wise.
9FS is between a Glock 17 and 19 height wise.

Glock 19 is a tough gun to beat. I've got 2. Every gun owner should have a 19 in their collection.

I agree. I foolishly sold my Gen2 in 2007. Got an OD Green on the way from Glockmeister though!

The first Glock I purchased was a well worn ex LE gen2 19. Still have it and will never part with it. It's my rat-rod gun. Looks well worn but has never missed a beat. Did yours have the Austrian proof stamp on the slide?

Tell her to rent a G19 and shoot it. After that she will have a better idea of what she wants.

I had the G19, shot the M&P 9c, sold the G19 to get the 9c, which fits my little hands much better. The G19 is very nice gun and nothing wrong with it, but make sure it fits her grip.

Exactly. I had a gen 4 G19 and it just didnt feel right to me. The M&Ps fit my hands perfectly (and I have big hands). Nothing wrong with the G19 but I prefer my M&Ps.

Some real good answers here. Since it will be basically a woman's gun, I want it to work well for her. I know I'll be shooting it as well and my hands are not large. Since having my M&P's, which fit like a glove and are very comfortable, I am leaning towards the Smith's. It's very difficult to rent a Glock or even an M&P 9c to even try and see how it is. The closest I can get is hold the G19 in my LGS and check it out without firing it. As you probably know they are one of the most popular pistols around.
Keep the comments coming. Thanks...

Not really. The Glock 19 and its .40 caliber twin, the Model 23, are sort of in a class by themselves in that sense.
Many LE agencies use the Glock 19 or 23 as a "do-all," (i.e. uniform duty, plainclothes duty and off-duty). The gun is big enough to where you feel you are getting a full size pistol capable of distance shots, but small enough for concealed carry without feeling like you are limited to 7 yard shots.
Amazingly the Glock 19/23 takes up about the same size as a 2 1/2 inch K frame. Lay one on top of another if that does not seem right to you. I was pretty surprised, to be honest with you. The capacity is higher, recoil feels lighter, the trigger is lighter and easier to manage, and they are very reliable.
The M&P line are fine guns for CCW for private citizens and for LE use, but in the double stack M&P (not counting the Shield, so as to compare "apples to apples"), S&W offers two barrel lengths (full and compact) while Glock offers four (in 9mm, the 17, 19, 26 and 24; in .40, the 22, 23, 27 and 35).
To answer your question, the closest S&W M&P to the Glock 19 and 23 would be, in my opinion, the full size, especially when you take into account magazine capacity, but the full size M&P is slightly longer and taller. The M&P Compact is more akin to the Glock 26 and 27, but the M&P Compact is slightly larger, while still being small.
To be honest, both are fine guns and it comes down to what feels best and what features you prefer.

Glock makes 3 9mm models (actually 4 but we arnt counting the long slide for this). The full size 17, compact 19 and sub compact 26. M&P has only 2.
The M&P9c is between the 19 and the 26.

I am a BIG fan of the M&P series, owning one of each FS Models...yet I carry a G23. A little smaller, lighter, and only 2 rounds less than M&P. I also have a G19, and it too is an excellent handgun.
It all boils down to what she (or you) is most comfortable with.

9c. IMO, it's what the Glock should have been. Nothing wrong with a Glock, but the M&P series feels better to me, and has a better trigger.
An argument could be made that recent striker fired pistols are basically copies of the Glock in one way or another.

This is kind of a vague question. They're both "plastic", they're both striker fired, they're both robust and reliable, so in that way they're equivalent. I have both. My most favorite Glock is the 19, I have two, a 1st generation I got 20 years ago and a 3rd generation I've had for a while. I also have two FS 9mm M&P's, and now two (2) Shields (the Shields won me over and now my Kahrs reside in another household!). Having said that I'll say this...
If the M&P's had been available back in the day I would have never bought any Glock...

I understand you are partial to M&Ps, but the 19 is really in a class of its own. I'd recommend handling one at a LGS and if it feels good, pick it up. It's a fantastic pistol, but if you guys really decide you can't keep it, trust me you'll be able to sell it. Easily. For minimum if any loss.

I'll take a slightly differnt tack here an suggest she try the S&W SD, comprable is size to the Glock 19, but much more (IMHO) ergomic than the Glock. Trigger has a differnt feel, longer pull, but she may like it.

And a lot cheaper.
Glock - M&P; you can't go wrong with either. Some like the trigger on Glocks better but M&Ps that are of recent manufacture have an improved trigger. Some like M&P grips better. That's a matter of personal opinion. I had a G 23 & G 21 which I dearly loved. Gave them to my son before WI had a concealed carry law. He likes his police issued M&P 40 a little better even though he's a true Glock fan. He's fresh out of the academy & has 2013 model M&P40 with the better trigger. He likes it better than the Glock's trigger which in itself is sweet.
Grips can be gotten used to. Some can adapt after a few rounds through it & some can never adapt.

While I like the M&Ps in all calibers, there is no directly comparable model to the G19 in my opinion. the G19 is smaller than the M&P FS, and only marginally larger than the compact. I'm very partial to my M&Ps, but I still have 2 G19s that I prefer when carrying a full-capacity 9mm. For concealed carry, nothing beats the Shield, in my opinion (in 9mm).

I was looking for either a G 19 or 32 but after doing some extensive research on the S&W M&P line I purchased a MP40c and very glad I did. If she wants a 9mm I highly recommend the mp9c. It's just a little more compact than the g19 but has about the same feel as a glock.

Most like a Glock is the SD line - SD9=G19
even has the same take down method.
SD9 VE? & SD40 VE? - Smith & Wesson

Hi,
Being a female with relatively small hands, I found M&P's with the small backstrap to be the perfect size for me. I've shot a few Glocks, here and there (mostly G19 and G17) and found the grip to be to large or block like for me.
Everybody is different, so she should rent a few pistols, try them out and see what feels best in her hands. I say there is nothing wrong with your wife having her own M&P, if that works out for her.

You have a M&P9 full size. Has she shot that? If not, have her shoot it. The compact 9 will have a little more recoil but not much more. The grip is almost the same, just shorter. I have big hands and I prefer the flat bottom mag in my compact.

I have both G19, and full and compact M&P's. There's something about the G19 I can't quantify...it's excellent in it's own way and I frequently carry it. But the M&P full size fits my hand--and several of my friend's who've compared them both--so well. They did such a great job on the grip. And I shoot the M&P so consistently accurately, even compared to the G19, that there's no 'choice' comparison if you can/want to have only one; I'd go M&P, personally. Glad I don't have to make that choice. Get both if you have the option! Both are worth it.

I appreciate your stepping up and making your comments. Since having both M&P 22 and the M&P 9 FS I was looking for a gun the wife could call her own. She has shot both and I think the 9mm has a fairly hefty kick for her. I was hoping the Glock 19 would have less. I am only going by what my LGS people and on the forum have to say about it. Wish I could shoot one before any purchase but they are not to be found. I really am a fan of the M&P and enjoy all 3 of them. My 15-22 is getting all the attention now and claiming the spotlight. What are your favorites?
Thanks,
Howard

I run Glocks and M&Ps, the G19 will not have less recoil than an M&P.
If recoil is an issue, she may need an hour or two with a professional handgun instructor. Recoil control is very much about technique.

Nah no longer need one in the collection. I actually traded mine for a Colt AR back last year shortly after buying my Shield.
I never thought i'd find a sucker to make that trade. But for some reason the guy wanted a Block 19 instead brand new Colt AR.
Oh well, im glad he likes it.

I'm happy to help. I am a total M&P fan, I mean what's not to love?
I have the 9FS and it is my favorite pistol of them all. I have the 9c which I like to carry during the winter, as it's a bit heavy and thick for summer carry, but has 12 rounds. That said, I purchased the M&P .22 a few months ago and think it's the perfect plinker, especially since I'm smitten with the M&P line. Now for summer carry....lucky me, I have the Shield 9 and it's a keeper.
With respect to the Rifles, I now take the 15-22 to the range every chance I get and while I have the M&P Sport, I've yet to shoot it. I got nervous when all the chatter of banning "Sporting Rifles" occurred and I decided THEY were not going to tell me, what I could and could not own! Hence, the AR is in my collection. I'm planning on heading to the range tomorrow after work, so I can check out the M&P 15 Sport and take my 9FS, as she deserves her time at the range too.
Candidly, unless your wife has issues with her hands or hand strength, I don't think the M&P 9 is too much to handle, especially the full size, but she'll have to make that decision for herself.
Good Luck!

Wife will have to try my 9 again and give it a fair chance. I think she wants to have a gun to call her own. She enjoys shooting the M&P 22. Like I said since getting the 15-22 I hardly shoot the others. Wonder if ammo is a problem where you live?

In terms of size, the M&P 45c is practically identical to the G19

If the gun is for the lady, then she needs to handle it before you buy it. My fiancé has an MP full-size but she also likes my Glock 19. I personally sold my MP nine compact for the Glock 19 and later got a Glock 26 as well. I find that the Glock's have nicer triggers based on my preference, but The MP seems to have better ergonomics. Remember, the guns for her so let your bias out-of-the-way and let her choose which she likes and what she shoots well

Well, I do like the Glock trigger. I also like the ergonomics of the M&P. My solution... My G19 has stippled grip that includes taking away the hump. BTW, leaving my G4G30 as is (leaving the grip alone). My M&P9c now has the DCAEK w/much better grip.
... just say'n

I agree with Enzo, my 45c is almost identical in size to a G19

Very good post IMO, I like and have both pistols. Most of the time I carry my G19 or my G23 though. The M&P 9c & .40c just feel to short in my hand. I contacted the GAP floor plate company about a year ago to see when they were going to make them for the M&P's like they do for the G26 & G27 and they replied back "soon" but I don't think they ever did.

Re: recoil -
Although there isn't much difference in recoil between a G 19 & M&P 9C but between a G23 & M&P 40C I've noticed a slight difference with the M&P having slightly less. It all made sense when I realized the M&Ps have a lower bore axis. I should think that the 9MM versions of both would show the same slight difference.

I am also thinking about buying a Glock 19, but I have been reading about some problems.
Funny, I went to buy one a few years ago but got another M&P.
However, I have always wanted one and I like the Gen 4s.

I got back into shooting last year after a LONG hiatus. Wanted either a Glock (which I'd owned in the past) or a 9c. I fell in love with the way the 9c felt in my hand. What I did NOT fall in love with was the totally ****** trigger on it, so went with the Glock which I really like. I have had ZERO problems with it . I use it regularly in IDPA matches. Only mods were a lighter Ghost connector and a set of Warren-Sevigny Tactical FO Sights.
However, lately I find myself giving serious thought to a new M&P9, and if I can find the Range/Carry Kit somewhere, I just might be tempted.
