Default First time shooting M&p 40c questions (1st post)

Just picked up a 40c with thumb saftey this weekend at the Nashville Armory. Bought some Federal (red and black box) ammo from walmart and went to shoot on Monday.

My question is that one some shots it seemed like the slide would slowly come back, stop, then go back forward.

It just seemed like that slide was "stuck" or didnt have enough to kick back.

Also, this is my first compact, I used to have a Remington 1911 fullsize.

Thanks in advance for any advice or comments.

Hello & welcome to the Forum. Probably the first question everyone is going to ask you is if you cleaned the gun before taking it to the range. Did it actually "stick", or did it cycle completely, just slowly? You should try a different brand to eliminate the possibility of the ammo being the cause. You didn't say how many rounds you put through it, so its possible with a good cleaning & more rounds down range your problems will clear up. Maybe a little more break in is all it needs.

I bought the gun and took it straight to the range they had. I bought the ammo before hand because I knew they had it in stock.
I shot exactly 100 rounds of the federal and 10 of the hornady defense rounds.
It would fire then the slide would just go back slowly, have a distinct stop, when I would tilt the weapon to check for a malfunction, it would rack. This happened about 4 our of 100 times.

So, I did not "clean it" before I shot it. I took it from the shelf to the range so to speak.

I am going to have to get used to the recoil, its a little harsher than I anticipated.
I will give it a good wipe down and cleaning and give it another go....If I can find some ammo.

I've got a 40c myself. Once you get use to the recoil it won't bother you at all. I enjoy shooting mine. Of the four 40's that I own, the worst felt recoil is in the Shield. I guess there's just not enough grip for me to hold on to. In my area, 40sw is easier to find than 9mm. Best of luck!

Whenever I sell a gun at my LGS, I always tell the customer to clean it before shooting. Quite a few times they don't listen, & come complaining to me that the gun is jamming, & sucks. Of course when I ask them if they cleaned it first, & they reply no, I ask why I wasted my breath. I then take their gun apart, give it a quick cleaning, & amazingly the gun works perfectly. Some guns have metal shavings when delivered, & others have thick grease for protection. Either way, a new gun should be cleaned before shooting. GARY

N4KVE is absolutely correct. S&W puts a grease in their guns for preservation. It was not meant for lubrication. It's like putting axle grease in your car's engine instead of motor oil. I wouldn't think that would work, either.

Clean the preservative out with a good gun cleaner & lube with a good gun lubricant according to manufacturer's instructions. The preservative will also collect powder residue making it even less lubricated than it already is.

I had this problem with my 40c and I did give the gun a proper cleaning. I took it to my gunsmith and he polished and chamfered the barrel. The gun eats anything i put into it without a hiccup now. Love my compact. Hopefully a good cleaning takes care of it for you though. Happy shooting.

Thanks. I am trying to aquire some frog lube and then I'll try it again.

Any suggestions on the slide release? I can't seem to slide it forward with my thumb. There is nothing wrong with just pulling the slide back --the sling shot method--but maybe i just got weak hands?

pull the slide back a little to release tension off the slide release and then rotate the back of the slide release downward...almost kind of clockwise

Pulling the slide back and releasing it or releasing it by pulling down on the slide lock does the same thing. S&W says that there is nothing wrong with releasing with the slide lock. New guns will be harder to pull down on the lock lever. This will loosen up the more you use the gun.

Always release and never walk the slide forward.

Also you can slam in a loaded mag (when the slide is locked back) and most times the slide will unlock and chamber a round.
