Question for those of you that own the Shield, Compact and Full Size
I own both a Shield (actually both flavors) and a Full Size 9
Have my eyes on a LNIB 9c for about 400 dollars.
Am I missing anything by not having a Compact in the stable? I'm asking owners of all 3 to get some feedback. Now that you own all 3 is there part of you going "man I really don't need all 3" or why did I buy a Shield, compact etc
At this point I guess it is more of a want than a need for me, just looking for opinions on which of the 3 you like the best etc.....

If the Shield had been available at the time I bought my compact I would not have bought the compact. Used to carry the c, now just carry the Shield. FS is better for home defense and range, Shield is better for EDC. No need for the c. If I could only afford 1, it would be the c. Hope this helps. If you want all 3 and can afford it, go for it! Be safe, shoot straight.

The compact is a great gun and a buy at that price. Could easily replace a Shield depending on how you carry.

If you are not going to shoot it at the range, you are not using it for home defense and you are not going to carry it... it doesn't seem logical to dump $400 on something you will never touch.
It is a good price but why not use that money to diversify your arsenal? Maybe an M&P 22 / M&P 15/22 for cheap range/plinking fun?
Like MumbleyPeg said the M&P compact is a great gun and makes a ton of sense if you are only purchasing one. That is the choice I made. If you already have a shield and FS I don't see the point.

Honestly, the 40c was my first M&P, I loved it, it was and can still be a do it all gun (carry/home defense). That said, the FS 40 fills my HD need and my Shield fills my carry need (I carry it 100% of the time now, it's just flat out easier to carry). That leaves my poor 40c collecting dust, nothing wrong with the compacts, I like them but I really don't have a need for one.

I shoot the compact better than the Shield so I guess if I could only have one it would be the c. $400, go for it.

I had all 3. When I received my Shield my son inherited my compact. I didn't really see the advantage of having both outside of the capacity of the compact.
If I had to pick one, I also would choose the Compact.

I had the C first as it was my only pistol and, as such, it was the most capable single weapon platform for carry, HD, range. When I bought the Shield I replaced the compact with a 5" Pro. Now I have the best of both worlds.

I have an M&P 40 FS & am waiting delivery of a compact. I had thought about a Shield long & hard but two factors kept me from buying it. The most important was the mag capacity. Since I buy my firearms from a police supply store the FS & compacts come with 3 mags. The Shield only 2. Compacts hold 10+1 rounds so that would give me 31 rounds on me as I plan on carrying both spares. The FS carries 15+1 & I carry one spare. Same round count between the two. The second factor was the wait time. I was told it could be up to a year. I know I could have gotten one a lot sooner through a regular gun store but they wouldn't come close to the price the police supply store sells them for.

Candidly, I have all 3 and thought that I did not really "need" the 9c, but I really like carrying it in the winter months (better conceal ability) with the right clothes and it has 12 rounds vs 7 or 8 of the Shield. I love all 3 the 9 full for home protection, and range, the 9c for winter carry and range and the Shield for warm weather carry.
Just all around great pistols, as most on this site know :-)

I don't know why people have to own 10 guns of the same mfr, be it HK, Smith, or Kimber. I'm not a huge S&W fan, but the 40c fits my hand like it was made for me. It's my carry gun, so there's no reason to even look at a Shield, as I find it too slim. I'm also not a Beretta fan, but the 9000s fits my hand so well, it's my night stand gun. Working at a LGS, I have been checking out the new XDS 9mm, & while I like it, I won't buy it because I already have a great carry gun, the 40c. It seems like many people have a Mon, Wed, Fri carry gun, & also a Tues, Thus, & weekend carry gun. What's up with that??? Working at gunshows, there's plenty of guns I can buy on the cheap, but I keep what I have, as it's good. Years ago I used to buy a gun, & trade it in a year later for something different, but I now regret doing that, so when I get a great gun, I keep it, & I don't buy guns to just sit in the safe. If it were me, I'd sell all the M&P's, & just get, & keep the c. GARY

Lots of good opinions here, thanks!
I have found that the 9c was made in Sept of 2011 so it has the older trigger.... It feels like it has a decent break on it.. Perhaps even a bit crisper than my FS

Good discussion, I'll throw in my .02. For me the only FS semi autos I have are all .45's. As such then I have no want or need for any other FS framed guns. I choose the 40C because it can shoot three calibers, it's still small comparatively, has excellent capacity, and with good night sights is a great night stand gun. The Shield and XDs 9 have never appealed to me because my CCW is either a Kahr PM9 or XDs 45. The XDs 45 I only carry occasionally during the winter because for me size matters in a CCW gun as at least 80% of the time I want to pocket carry comfortably. So the Shield, XDs 9, or PPS, do not tempt me as they will not pocket carry well for me. I only got the XDs because being a .45 fan I was intriuged by a .45 that small, it's been a great purchase. For me if I could only have one M&P it would be a Compact hands-down. I'm very happy with my 40C but have no plans to add any other M&P's to that.

I had all three. I sold the compact after rationally thinking about the niche it played, deciding that that niche was very small for me, and then waiting for three months to see if I would ever get the urge to carry or even practice with it (which I obviously didn't). I sold it with a nice holster and a 50 rd box and picked up a SIG P220 that I've wanted for a long time. Everyone won.

The MP9c to me has all the worst attributes of a Glock 26 without being as small.
Skip it.

I have all three or should I say had. My wife shot my 9c and I no longer have a 9c since she has taken it as her gun. I still get to carry the Shield and have the FS for home defense.

My FS is for IDPA, My 9C is for HD and my Shield is my carry weapon. They are all great and each has its place. They all go to the range.
If I had to have only one it would be my 9C. Small enough to carry and large enough to me for IDPA. I use the 9C with 17 rnd mags and the mag adapter. Fits my hand great with 17 or 12 rnd mags.

I'll play...
I have all three, in multiples of each in fact.
I love them all, but I have my favorites.
The FS models are great for the range and home defense.
The compacts are great for EVERYTHING. I can put a FS mag in a compact and it becomes essentially an FS.
The Shield is okay. It's fun. I have three. It would be the FIRST I let go. My favorite is the compact. Easy to carry, easy to put extra rounds in, very reliable.
Your signature shows you are Air Force. You can buy brand new M&P's from Bud's Police for $399 with three mags anytime. I wouldn't be excited about a used one for $400. Just sayin' .

I agree with these two thoughts. I actually like the Shield the best of the three pistols. I do not think of the FS gun as much of a range gun, and for a HD pistol I prefer a .45 Auto of some type to either a 9mm or .40SW.
That said, I can't see any harm in owning a Compact model considering you seem to want one and you seem to think the price is attractive. We all have our own preferences and ideas. The Compact might turn out to be right up your alley.

While I don't have a 9c I plan to soon. I've always liked the look, but have a shield and wanted other guns before the 9c. Check quantico tactical they have them on sale for 348.

I think Quantico sells them for $398 and then says you can get a $50 rebate from S&W. Quantico charges $25 for shipping a gun, Bud's does not.
They are all hard to find in stock, you have to keep checking.

I had (have) a 3913 that was my off duty carry gun until the Chief nixed all but a select list of weapons authorized for carry. One of those that made the list was the 9c.
Now I loved my 3913 (and still do) but the 9c is quickly winning me over, 12 + 1 VS 8 + 1, one trigger pull instead of a long heavy pull followed by a very light trigger, incredible accuracy and reliability and it has the same dimensions as my 3913 (which had pachmeyer rubber grips which made it a bit wider).

I'm not so sure that getting a used Smith is a bad thing. They are working 3 shifts around the clock to keep up with demand. Because of the demand they have been hiring lets just say some less than skilled workers.

When I sent my last gun back to S&W for warranty, the first question they asked was "Are you the original purchaser of the firearm?"
If you buy used you'd have to say no, and they could deny warranty.

Glad I'm not the only one that shoots the Compact better than the Shield. In fact, since buying the XDs45 & already own an M&P Compact I wish I'd never bought the Shield.
No, I don't own an M&P FS... have a Gen 4 Glock 30 for home firewatch duty. I will not deny the M&P ergos is superior to Glock. I digress...
Something about my 9C, the ergos, trigger pull < 5lbs (thx Apex DCAEK), the mag cap, and the grip (w/mag flat base plate) is actually shorter than the Shield's. Yes, 9C is much thicker but IMO the grip length is just as important for CCW.
With that said, for $400 BUY it!

I've had more trouble w/NIB v used. Not always, but often times a used pistol becomes available because the owner wanted the newer version, or decided to go with a different brand.

I don't have a FS but I use the 17rd mags in my C for HD. The Shield is my EDC. If need be, I have also carried both. The 9C (12+1) OWB and the Shield *** (towards weak side).

Just today, my local gun dealer had two Shield 40s in stock. I did not buy one. I love my 40c (an LE model with night sights). It just "feels" better in my hand. The gun is dead accurate and no failure after a year of shooting. The 40c is my EDC.
The decision for me is comfort and accuracy and reliability. I get it all with my 40c.

Well my American friends , you are indeed very lucky to have to deal with such problems like the ones above ..Here in Canada,we don't have a conceale carry law, we are not allowed any handgun with a barrel lenght less than 4.25 in. barrel so .. be happy having all those choice to make ..!! Wish i had those problems of so many choices ..!!
Recently purchased a S & W 9 mm the 4.25 in. model with the range kit..so i got the gun ,2 spare mags,Blade-Tech holster and double mag pouch + a gizmo for helping to load ammo in those mag.. good because i find the mag sprigns to be REALLY hard to push a cartridge in with finger pressure ..my PRE BAN 6906 i still have with 5 stainless mags and those are easy to load ..
Today i installed a Viridian X5L Gen 2 Lazer-light kit on my MP and WOW .. i am very happy with the gun and laser-light kit .. shot 300 rounds of American Eagle 124 grs. ball ammo to break in the new pistol,it ran like a Swiss Watch ..i'm very happy with my MP pistol, fit my hand perfectly, precision is good, grip(medium one ) is perfect for my rather small handsize .. Also got a Tacloc holster included in the price of the Laser sight ..Great invention ..dial in the light and laser , holter gun and everything shut down.. draw and everything light up ..!!
This will be my bedside pistol with the Tacloc holster tied to bedframe with large Velcro tape .. my 6906 will be my daytime gun from now on ..i'm a member of the national Firearm Association of Canada .. we are pushing hard for a Concealed carry law and i'm happy to say that the future looks brighter ahead for us..About time that we get out of the Stone Age ..!! Keep safe all of you ..

In my area the only First Responder (LE/Mil, EMTs, ect) prices are Glocks @ GT Distributors. I bought a G4G19 for $398 & G4G30 for $464 both NIB. I'm not into FS pistols. My ownership consist of Compacts, Subcompacts, and those that have just over 3" barrel. If, I had to pic between my 9C & Shield 40 it would be the 9C. Besides, I shoot my XDs45 better than my Shield.

I agree. I don't see any reason to purchase a Compact version in your case unless you are into gun collecting.

I've decided on hold off on the 9c for now. Too many other firearms I see each day lol. I think I may get the M&P 22 as the only other 22 pistol I have is the S&W 22A which I haven't shot in about 12 years. I think the M&P 22 will make a good companion to my FS 9

I've never understood all the excitement w/22's? As a plinker? I'd rather take one of my CCW to the range. I know the 22 cal is great for preteens learning to shoot. Anyway, to each his own.

I had to M&P 9 Compact and sold it for the Shield. I love the Shield because I can carry it. I loved the compact because it was a joy to hold and shoot but it was just a little to much weight for me. I decided that if I could only have one it would be the one I could carry easy. I am a little small at 160 so maybe that was why I was feeling the weight and also the width. I think the compact is a better pistol. It is more forgiving. I tend to limp wrist at times with the Shield and it has stove piped on me twice. I never had a malfunction on the 9c because it was just an easier gun for me to hold. It is just a great gun

lol
You don't like plinking with a 22? I love it...shoot all day for pennies. 22 has become not such a rarity in these parts so that isnt an issue anymore (for now) I have been shooting 22 with my 15-22 and Sig 522 but would like to shoot more with a handgun.
But like you said, to each their own.

I own all 3 and IMO no, you are not missing anything.
The full size makes an okay range gun, the Shield is an okay
CCW piece. I bought the M&P9c because I wanted to try it.
I may end up selling it when I decide to thin the herd.

I'm sorta the other way. I have a 9mm Pro, three M&P 9mm's (personal gun, issued gun, and range issued gun), and a 9C. I will buy a Shield as soon as it gets approved, but I will definitely keep the 9C.
I have shot a little less than a thousand rounds through our test Shield so I'm not unfamiliar with the pistol. The 9C is my main carry gun, and will stay that way. With the 9C and one spare full-size magazine I have 30rds on me. With the Shield and one mag, I'd have 15 - 16. There are times, however, that the 9C is still a bit on the large side (Church, around the house, etc.) and the Shield will fit that role perfectly.
So yes, I think there is a place for all three versions.

And I think you are right. I also think you will find it to be a lot of fun to shoot. I put more rounds through my M&P 22 than all the others combined. It's cheaper to shoot and it is so much fun that you won't want to put it down, especially after you find a few extra mags for it. The .22 is also a reasonably good trainer for the FS and the c, but not as much so for the Shield.

The only one I don't have is the compact M&P40.
I have a M&P40 Shield, 4.25" M&P40, 5" M&P40L Pro CORE, and will not rule out a compact to fill the list. I love all my 40's and shoot them all very well.

Yea, I'd love to be in my 40's, again.

It's all personal preference. I have the exact same pistols as Rifleman with addition to the 9mm versions, and I don't like the Compact models. If I'm going to carry a Compact model it is going to be concealed and the Shield fits that bill best. I don't feel the Shield there, and I did carry a 40C for a short while, and wasn't impressed at all, so I traded it.

I have all three in 9mm and while the Shield and compact are both nice. If had to buy all over again, I would not have gotten the Shield as it is almost the same as the compact but with less mag capacity. That said, I still use the Shield as my everyday CCW carry piece just because I had a really nice IWB Kydex holster made for it and is a bit thinner in the grip area, so it does conceal a little better.

I started off with the 40c before they released the shield series. It is a very comfortable and somewhat compact gun. I could see it being used for C&C but not me personally. It is rather thick which is also why its comfortable. I honestly hate the external safety on the Compacts and FS M&P's but I cannot use a firearm without it, thanks to years of Army brainwashing about thumb safety my brain is just now prewired to flip a thumb safety anytime I draw my firearm and if its not there my brain just goes into red flag mode. Which is why I got the shield for the safety which I love btw. It is so subdued into the case of the firearm when its down that if you didn't want to use it, you would never need to know it was there, but when its up in the safe position it is just so smooth and easy to flip down. I would sell my full size 40 which I rarely use because I hate the big bird wing like safety on it and buy a new one with a shield style safety. Between the Compact and Full size there is essentially zero difference except the size. Do you need a slightly smaller version of a firearm you already own? That is entirely up to you, because they do not offer any different configuration options between the two and the Shield is just way easier to carry concealed. If you got bigger hands, you will probably need to put some sort of grip sleeve on the shield or hold it tightly because the grip is slender and its odd the first few times you go to the range.
