I just wondered if anyone has solved the problem of the sharp edges on the rear sight? I really dont want to file or sand them, because it will remove the bluing. I have a Ameriglo proglo front sight on it now.
I pocket carry, and everytime I draw,the darn sights seem to snag. I cant understand why S&W even made them like that,on a carry weapon?

It is probably not the sights as much as your technique. Pocket carry with a Shield is not an option for me. It is possible with a much smaller Kahr PM9, but barely. A really well designed pocket holster may help, but personally the option of pocket carry with a semi auto requires a lot more practice than a small j frame. Cargo pants would work for the Shield, but I can imagine a quick draw from cargo pants pockets under stress, would resemble an octopus falling out of a tree.

I often pocket carry my Shield in a Desantis holster & I used to pocket carry my 40c in the same holster. I'm starting to gravitate away from it because of the difficulty of drawing when seated. I've started using a Don Hume JIT belt slide holster, even with pants that don't have belt loops. I put the belt on over the pants & cinch it tight. It works well for me & its comfortable.

Still not answering my question.... Has anyone smoothed out the rear sights, wthout ruining them?

Impossible to round off without removal of the bluing.

go ahead and replace the sights with something you like or just round off the stock sights then reblue it and repaint your dots.

its the only solution available to you beyond replacing the sights which is the direction I would go in your position

I have taken a fine toothed file to the tips of my compact. Just enough to soften the points.

The Shield is already a tall weapon. The stock rear sight is terrible for pocket conceal.

I changed out my Shield stock sights for the XS Big Dot sights and pocket draw is now quick and snag free.

Check out my pictures. The rear sight is angled forward and edges are rounded and the rear sight is lower in profile to the stock sights.

No. I removed the entire sight and replaced it (along with the front) with a set from Ameriglo...

Well if your just stuffing it in your pocket without a holster it will be a problem.

The rear stock sight catches as you draw the weapon from a pocket holster.

The height of the Shield also compounds the problem drawing from the pocket.

The problem isn't the pocket holster. The issue is the average pocket opening is not large enough to accomidate the distance between the rear sight and the flush magazine base plate of the Shield and the sharp edges of the stock sight only added to the problem.

Try as I did when I would draw my Shield the stock rear sight would catch on the opening of my pocket.

When I replaced the rear sight with a low profile XS Big Dot sight which has rounded edges and angled forward I no longer had the problem of the gun sight catching on the pocket opening of my slacks.

I do not believe that any edge on the Shield rear sight requires attention. Thus, I have never heard of anyone trying to modify them.

I do not know what type of pants you are wearing, but I have never had any issue. I wear dress slacks, khakis of various brands and jeans.

Obviously, it is an individual problem, and it is good that you saw the problem and addressed it. The fact that you thought about it, came up with a solution that works for you and followed through is good. Presentation of the pistol is vital to its use, and the last thing you want is to struggle to remove it from the pocket when you need it most.

I wear 34 x 36 Sam's Club slacks to work. I realize there are brands that work better for conceal like khakis but I am a tightwad so I had to figure out what works with my cheap pants.

It is almost as sharp as a skate blade. I can shave the tops of my fingernails with those rear sights.
I will take a small file to them, and touch them up if necessary. I am not spending $60 for a rear sight. The $40 I spent for the front is enough!...and is all thats necessary IMO.

I just seen your question, 3 years late, so i guess you found a solution by now. I also had the same problem with my shield, so i took a dremal to it and the shimmy spots i put black sharpie on, so now no more holes in my T shirts from the sharp edges. I carry OWB & IWB now i'll carry the shield again. I might spot reblue later.
