When dry firing my Shield, my impression is that the trigger pull is not consistent in terms of the amount of pressure required. Sometimes it seems to require considerably more pressure to release the striker than at other times.

When more pressure is required, there is more movement of the front sight at the instant of release--will this affect the point of impact for such a round?

Is this perhaps unique to the gun I have? Or is it just subjective on my part?

Any solutions you might recommend will be welcome.

I'm kind of having an issue myself. The striker safety makes a pretty gritty sound when you push on it with a punch or something. Definitely needs some trigger work but I dont feel comfortable removing the rear sight with minimal equipment.

Would polishing part of the trigger bar help the trigger break?

of course it affects the point of impact, how much depends on distance. unless you can hold the gun perfectly STEADY during the break. most people shoot more accurately w/a shorter lighter trigger. heavy triggers tend to make me hit lower than what I am aiming for.

I just put the Apex hard sear in mine and am totally pleased with the outcome. I can live with the grittiness from what I've read about trying to get the rear sight off.

Movement of the sights will affect point of impact. This is true for any pistol or revolver. The rest is subjective and I suspect you "think" it is different, so it "is" different, when in fact it is not.

Mine smoothed out after about 500 rounds. Feels decent based on what the price point of this gun is

Not sure what could or would be causing the inconsistent trigger pull pressure. My stock Shield 40 was consistent at 6.5 pounds. I added an Apex sear and blocker, plus polished the sear and striker face. I now have a 3 pound 10 to 12 ounce pull, which is exactly what I wanted. If you buy the Apex Duty/Carry kit, their springs make the pull 5 to 5.5 pounds. I used the stock shield sear spring and used a Glock trigger spring, to get the lower pull weight. Or you can try firing many rounds or lots of dry firing to try to fix the gritty pull. You could follow this video for a quick, permanent fix, if the blocker is the problem for the gritty pull:

OP, I bet your gun was manufactured in March or April of this year. Send it back and have them correct the problem as it is their quality control screw-up.

Robkarrob, I had the exact same issue as you with my Shield except the trigger pull weight varied between 7.5 and 11 pounds (on the non-Massachusetts version of the Shield). The striker safety block hole was so poorly drilled by S&W that the striker block would sometimes get stuck in the up (unsafe) position or get jammed half-way in its movement up and require more tigger pull poundage to overcome it.

The grittiness has been an ongoing complaint since this gun was introduced. The solution is simple if done at the time of manufacture. Shame on S&W for not picking up on this a day or two after the gun was introduced to the public.

True but it's all about the $$$$$ S&W makes on this CrackerJack box gun.. Low production cost high production output.. Still it could have a quality feel and function.. Don't take this post wrong I love the M&P just no excuse for most of the issues we been having with the guns.. All the triggers should be much better out of the box from the start of production!.. I polished the striker safety bar (the one that lifts the striker safety) where it rubs on the striker safety plug with some crocus paper (super fine emery cloth). It smoothed the grittiness dramatically. The more I dry fire the better it gets, and that is all I am doing to my trigger.
