Stiff Safety
I owned a lot of guns but never had a gun as stiff as my new M&P Shield 9mm. especially the safety. Cleaned it and added a bit of gun butter with little result. Suggestions please.....dg255

My 22A has an incredibly stiff safety too. You really can't operate it with the thumb right now.

The thumb safety on the Shield is on there most likely to satisfy laws in certain states. It is not really designed to be used like the slide lock safety on a 1911. It is far too small and still, which is just perfect to keep it in the "off" position, where it belongs.

What's this "safety" thing you're talking about?

What rgoodwin says. Just work it. I can swipe mine off easily now. Its still kinda stiff. But it works. I think the only real way to loosen it would be to remove the sear housing, disassemble it, polish or trim the safety a tiny bit or the piece that the safety rides on. I believe that part sits on a spring. Maybe a lighter spring would do it too.

I just leave mine in the off position, as I carry mine in an IWB holster, so no big deal. Besides it is too small to be trying to hit with your thumb in a high stress situation, at least I think so.

My Shield 40 also has a stiff safety, but with practice I found I can easily swipe it off. You have to practice forcing your thumb tight against the top of the lever, and then swipe down. At first I also thought the lever was too small to safely swipe off with my thumb. But it is now easy to get my thumb in the correct spot, and with strong inward pressure on the lever, I just swipe down, and it snaps off every time.
