Default New here with a new Shield that may have problems

I'm new here and wanted to say hi from Texas but more importantly, I just picked up a 9mm Shield and I think it may have a problem. I bought it last Thursday, took it home and cleaned it out then went to the range this past Saturday. I will say it is very accurate but i had probably half a dozen FTE's and one where the spent cartridge never left the barrel. I know it wasnt limp wristing as my brother, ano experienced shooter, was watching my form and said it was good so I'm thinking it may be (hopefully is) the ammo.

The first box was Herters 115 gr brass and the second box was Sellier and Bellot (sp) 115 gr. The problems seemed to be with those two brands as the last 100 rounds were Winchester White Box and it functioned flawlessly after that. I did strip it down and clean it during the first 100 rounds but still had a couple of issues after that but befoer switching to WWB.

Is this normal or should I be concerned? This will be my EDC so i have to have complete confidence in it. Ive shot the same ammo through my M9 as well as through a Glock 19 with out any issues at all. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Personally,

I wouldn't worry unless it was still giving you problems AFTER 200-300 rounds. Some guns need a "break in" period. Not saying yours does, but some do. I'd shoot it more before making any drastic decisions.

Hard primers or high primers will give Shields a hard time.

It was the number of FTE's that bothered me, especially when it didnt even extract the case after it had been fired. That lead to it trying to feed a new round into a blocked chamber making for a nice jam. It did great with the WWB so i am going to try and find some more 9mm in different brands, including the Herters, and S&B, and see how it does the next time out. My other gunds havent had any problem with those two brands so i was really suprised when my Shield did. Otherwise I LOVE THIS GUN. After carrying a Glock 19, the Shield feels great IWB at the 3:00 position.

Did the successful ejections seem weak? Did the fired brass travel at least 4 ft at 4 o'clock? It could be that the recoil spring needs a workout before it settles in. Try leaving your slide locked back for a period of time to see if that helps.

The ejections were strong but were all over the place. Two of them flew straight back over my head and down the back of my shirt. You would have thought i was shooting a Glock 19. According to my brother, it was ejecting cases all over the place.

I order 500 rds of the Herters and shot 1 box yesterday w/ no issues thru a Glock 17, Shield and 9c. I've seem other's comment on cases being ejected in the face or irratically and pointed to the hook angle on the ejector. I'd run it awhile longer before swaping parts though. Best of luck resolving the issue.

This is an issue that comes up with both the Shield 9 and 40 now and then on this and other forums. In my opinion, FTE isn't a break-in issue if the slide is going back. The extractor should have hooked and thrown the spent casing out (if the slide is going back and you're not limp wristing - which I'm sure you're not). My Shield 40 had a FTE during the first 10 rounds fired (Golden Sabre 180 gr.) and then perfect the next 100 rounds with cheap ammo. If the problem persists, you should send it back to S&W for an extractor replacement for peace of mind.

The way I understand it, FTE means either failure-to-eject or failure-to-extract. A failure-to-eject always results in an ejector port jam and a failure-to-extract results in a double-feed jam unless it's the last round in the magazine. Is this everyone's understanding as well?

My Shield9 seems to be picky. I bought 1000 rds of Aguila 117gr JHP and this gun does not like them (sometimes)...hard primers with a few FTE (to eject and once a double feed...with Aguila 117gr JHP). My Glock 26 eats them up with zero failures...the hard primer strikes I put in my G26...no problems. My Shield9 likes the Federal AE 147gr FMJ and the Winchester NATO 124gr FMJ the best. I have shot some 124gr Gold Dot and a few Hornaday 115 gr defense ammo with no problems. I personally think mine likes the heavier grain bullet and or a much hotter round...my opinion...good luck.
