Default Crowning on FS M&P 9mm Barrel

Hello all. I'm wondering if you can offer your expertise and help me out with a concern I have. I recently purchased a FS M&P 9 and the factory barrel that came with it looked completely trashed inside the bore(and it doesn't shoot much better). So I called S&W and they wanted me to send the whole gun in just to get a new barrel. I decided I'd rather not wait and ordered a factory 9mm barrel from MidwayUSA. Now, the funny thing is, is that the barrel I got from Midway lacks any sort of crowning and the rifling goes all the way to the end of the muzzle.

Seen here-

The barrel that actually came with the gun was properly crowned, but the machining inside the bore seems to have been lower quality and the gun doesn't seem to shoot as accurately with it.

Here's the one that came with it-

Hopefully the pictures depict well enough what I've tried to illustrate.

My question is, the gun seems to shoot better with the barrel that I got from Midway, but could the lack of proper crowning affect accuracy? And should I just send the gun back to S&W to get a properly crowned barrel that is better quality than the one that came with the gun?

Thanks for your input.

In my experience, the most effective and efficient way to get a new S&W repaired is to paste their return label on the box.

From what I can tell in the photos, it appears that someone at the factory forgot to crown that barrel. I'd crown it and check for any change.

What does a poor machined bore look like I can't see anything wrong in your pic but obviously I can't see inside the bore?

It's hard to explain but it just looks really rough. Like its bare steel without the melonite finish. The barrel from Midway looks and functions much better minus the lack of a crown.

I've seen this issue a few times here on the forum recently. Here's a link to a recent one by oldbill with pics of a proper and incorrect crown.
9FS Barrel defective or not?

You may also want to check out this article to see if you have (or get) the most recent production version of the new barrel. I believe that the latest version is supposed to help with accuracy in the 9mm.

What was your mfg or test fire date?

I'll have a look at those links. Test fire date was 4/4/13. It's got the new 1:10 barrel and the one from Midway is also 1:10.

I think I'm just going to cave and send it in. I'm going to ask them if they can crown the other barrel I bought, too. Then I can just put the guess work to rest. I've had accuracy issues with this gun since I bought it.

I'll be calling S&W when they're back in business on Monday.
