Default Shield recall

One of my local gun shops just got an email stating that ALL Shields are being recalled and further sales to be stopped. WTH?!
He said further info coming.

Just saw a post from ar15 too so I guess I shouldn't say "nothing" on the internet, but nothing substantiated.

How do you know that guy who started that thread isn't an idiot? I also noticed the linkback to this thread, so we are going around in circles over a rumor started by someone who has not provided a source. Even then, his source could also be flawed.

Fact is I don't know... he could be an idiot. They both could be idiots...or neither. maybe both are the same idiot ...relax.

as far as the link back, it was only so peeps on both forums would know it was slightly more than an isolated thread... the silver city FB post appears legit...for now

Seriously. Not to be demeaning, but I've learned in my short time visiting ar15 DOT com that there are a large % of nutjobs on that forum.

People who MIGHT be knowledgeable, but are certainly running the ragged edge of sanity.

Man, whatever you do, DON'T disagree with the opinions of certain people on that board. They will go nuts on you.

And DON'T - under any circumstances - ask for advice then NOT go with what they tell you to do. You'll get annihilated. I've not personally experienced it, but I certainly won't ask for advice or opinions on that board after some of the personal attacks I've seen take place. Including from moderators.

If I need advice on my AR, even though my current one is not an M&P, I'd probably ask here first before asking over there (unless a thread with similar topic was already underway).

I take everything I read on the internet with a grain of salt. That's why I'm so thirsty all the time, lol.

There are several sites like this one, Defensive Carry...com & the two Army ones I moderate with good reliable info plus maybe a couple more that I have more faith in.

I've said this to a lot of people before. I would think S&W would be the first to put something out there. Just my 2 cents.

Well that's sounding more official, unfortunately. Nothing from the company, so it's still not a real thing to me.

Boy that would suck if for real.

That would likely put me further back on the schedule for picking one up. Was targeting later this year. Might have to either change my timing plan or go for my second choice.

I would think that it would appear here, IF it were true.

Product Safety Information - Smith & Wesson

But I DID come across this:And this actual verbatim email post in several forums:

We received the following announcement from Smith and Wesson today. More info as it becomes available..

"To All Smith & Wesson Customers

Smith & Wesson is in the process of announcing a Safety Alert relating to the lower trigger on M&P Shield pistols. We should be in a position to provide you with more details as to the scope of the affected pistols in a few days. In the meantime, please stop all sales and shipments of M&P Shield pistols pending further notice. We appreciate your assistance in ensuring that the products we provide to customers meet our high standards for quality and safety."

I was taught, as a child, believe none of what you hear and only half of what you see. When it comes to the internet, if you didn't make it up yourself believe even less than you hear...

So it looks like a bad batch of the trigger safety spring (not sure that's even the right name) went out recently. Looks like this effects only recent Shields and a small number of them at that.

I just hung up with S&W Cust service. They said that there is not an actual recall out but there was a safety alert on a trigger. He did not have any other information at the time but did hear about the rumor/alert.

No word if the safety alert will turn into a recall.

Hope this helps.

JFR

***Update*** " M&P Shield Safety Alert" Confirmed by S&W. See post #78.

That mirrors my recent conversation with them as well. He said the website will update with any actionable information. I'm waiting for a shipping label for my Shield (not related to the trigger or this possible recall) and I hope I can slide in under any newly repair volume.

I just spoke with a very large LGS that buys direct from Smith(not through a distributor). These guys have Shields all the time and have had many shipments of mags over the last few months.

The only thing they have heard about a recall is from customers calling them to confirm internet rumors.

I just got off the phone and got the same information about the trigger pin, it should be on their web site this afternoon. I have almost given up on buying firearms this would be the 3rd pistol I would have to send back in less than a year. 2 Rugers and maybe an S&W. I am thinking I should buy toy trains.

So there is a recall? I have put almost 1000 rounds through mine... its my EDC. I find it hard to believe something is wrong with all the shields.

Don't care what they say. Neither one of mine are going back for something like that. If it aint broke, dont fix it.

So they stop selling the 9mm barrel to the public. Now all of a sudden they have a recall on ALL the Shields. Be my luck they have figured out a way to stop the .40 from firing the 9mm cartridge and visa versa.

If the lower half of you trigger is springing forward, as it should, your Shield should not be affected by this "recall."

I, personally, am waiting for Apex Tactical's Shield trigger to be released.

No there is no recall yet just a safety warning, I had to send an LC380 and a ruger 1911 back so far this year. Was not really happy with Ruger at all. But no recall yet on the shield

If there is truly a recall, it must be for the pins in the trigger walking out. Apex Tactical talks about it in their Shield kit video --- Apex Duty/Carry Shield Kit Install - YouTube

I thought they already released it? And If this turns out to be a recall I will be doing the same and going to the Apex

The guy is legitimate, I buy at his shop. He said there was an email in from S&W this morning that said to stop all sales of existing stock until further notice. They did not give further detail in the email, just said that more information was to follow.

I've had a Shield on Lay-away @ Cabela's. They just called me and told me to come and pick up my deposit as the Shields have been recalled, with no other info available.

Redneck, if you're too lazy to call a big box store to find out for yourself, then I guess you're better off continuing to rip on 1st time posters such as myself. Could it be that we 1st timers are new to S&W, and as a consequence, have little to add to the forum that's not yet already been covered? Nice way to greet new folks to the forum.

I have a good friend that is the general manager of a BPS. I called asked if he has heard anything about it, he confirmed that they did receive a stop selling notice today and will looking into the details for me.

I think this one has some weight to it, now it's just a matter of the details and depth of the impact.

FWIW I think the impact will be minimal.

Add**Also the 1st time posters have good credit with me, keep it up and thanks for sharing! We all had a 1st post at one time, I'm glad theirs added value!

Bass pro answer to this question = huh?

Cabelas answer to this question = Since when?

LGS #1 answer to this question = Not since a mag issue on the .40, and i dont even think that was a complete recall.

LGS #2 answer to this question = GOD i hope not. I just sold 8 today (2 about 15 minutes ago) and we are on the immediate notify list by all manufacturers that we sell for. Let me check the manufacturer since we have very easy access to them.........Manufacturer tells me they know of no such thing.

There u have it.........next.

No. Not yet. Scott Folk of Apex Tactical emailed me this on August 12th...

We're working on one, it's taking us a while to get everything the way we need it to make it right.

**Update** I heard back and apparently S&W hasn't provided any other details or instructions to dealers other than "Safety issue with the lower trigger mechanism" and that they will be providing more details shortly. All this aligns with what others have posted here.

It looks like the "Mailman" OP has delivered. Thanks for sharing the info.

Why are they still allowing the Shield to be sold by big chain box stores and other LGS. This makes no sense. Because if it were a potential problem they would put a hold on ALL new orders and wouldnt let one leave the store if it were already there.

And IF it did happen to accidentally be true. This would fall in line with it being a possible "batch" problem. Meaning all the ones at the store can be sold because maybe they dont fall within that batch.

It may be prudent to read the previous posts prior to posting. There IS an issue with some of the new triggers. If your trigger is fine, you have no worries. See post 17

That's interesting, I have two shields bought this year, one with a May date and one with a July date. The July build, the pin for the trigger hinge appears to be set too deep on the trigger which then protrudes on the right side of the trigger enough to be felt. The May build is flush on both sites. Both triggers function fine, but the July build pin looks like the one in picture 2 on the link in post#17 and the May build looks like the one in picture 3. Here's the link for those that don't want to go back to the post: S&W Shield missing a spring? - M4Carbine.net Forums

Thank you for the layman's version. My trigger definitely is spring loaded. Snaps back every time.

Try as I might (gun empty) squeezing the top half of the trigger will not fire the weapon.

Inertia safety works as designed on my Shield.

I called the local academy and they were put on a no sale hold and received that notice straight from smith and wesson. From what I have gathered it pertains to newly bought shields. not those of us who bought it months ago(=

Well, nuts! I have one built in June and one from July. Both seem to me to be ok, but maybe more specific info will be forthcoming.
