Default Another Shield 9mm Defect - Trigger reset spring broke on first shot...

Had another problem with my brand new Shield 9mm. My trigger reset spring has broken. Just spoke to S&W and they're sending me a prepaid label to get the gun sent in, but man, I'm so annoyed that this pistol has had issues since day 1. This is the second "brand new" malfunction I've had with my Shield 9mm. It occurred either before or as a result of the very first shot I took with the pistol. My first problem was with the slide stop spring, which was not properly tapped into the front rail group. So when I stripped the pistol down to clean it before I shot it for the first time, I couldn't get the slide back on because the stupid spring was sticking out. Long story short, I fixed that, and then this dadgum trigger reset spring broke. Very, VERY frustrating! Has anyone else had this problem?? See the pic below of the spring I'm referring to, and also a link to my posts about the first issue I had with this pistol: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/327785-shield-9mm-factory-defect-help.html

There is a safety recall on the shield trigger. S&W advises to test and see if the trigger safety gets stuck on the shield and if it does, to send it in.
Knock on wood, my trigger has been fine so far

A few months back my TS broke on my FS 9 and I sent them pics and explained what broke. First they sent me two mag springs for a FS .40. Quite a difference in size. I was perturbed when I opened the package. Eventually got what I needed.

It's defective send it to me you don't want that piece if junk!

Serious note **** happens. I'd be pissed to. Actually have a shield with the trigger safety alert. No biggie that's why I bought a S&W they will definitely fix it.

This is one of the parts I worry about... It seems you can buy the entire trigger bar assembly, but not just the spring? Hope they make it right for you... It really sucks sending in guns, I'd rather then just send parts...

Yes, I'm aware of the recall, but my trigger problem has nothing to do with the problem that caused the recall. I discussed this with the cust. service rep just to make sure.

Oh trust me, I tried getting away with just sending in the parts. but they insisted that I send the gun in "since it's a trigger issue, and those have to be dealt with in house". At this point I'm so annoyed that I really don't care... If I send the whole gun back S&W will have to reassemble it (since I have it torn down pretty far) and check every functionality before I get it back. I'm hoping that the extra attention will translate into me having a more reliable pistol and also me having more confidence in the pistol, knowing that it's been gone over with a fine tooth comb.

I have a Shield 9 that is on its second trip back, but I will say the folks at S&W are doing their part. The first was for a known issue, the second possibly for a breakdown in use. There has been no question about dealing with it. Compare the handling to another manufacturer, no, can't compare (I sold the SR45 after giving up on it).

The understandable concern I have is that it is intended for EDC, and I need to trust it. We shall see. The guy who took my last call promised that he would check it before shipping himself. Being a customer service guy, I appreciate that.

I just bought a Shield last Thursday and today was my first day shooting it. Halfway through my second mag the trigger spring broke. Needless to say I was kinda pissed. I've done weeks of research on the shield before I bought it and never heard of this. But my local gunsmith is gonna try and fix it for me. If not they said they would ship to S&W for me

While I have no idea why your trigger spring broke, I'd offer that it's not impossible for a small number of improperly produced/hardened springs to make their way from any given vendor to any given gun company. I can think of a couple other gun companies who have changed hardening, end coil or wire spring shape, etc in their good quality guns to address problems encountered by owners. Sometimes these things make it all the way into the hands of owners before they're recognized, identified and can be resolved. (Not a perfect world.)

Armorers can order the springs separately, but it's not as simple of an installation as it is in some other brands (and people, including less experienced armorers, can apparently easily install springs incorrectly in those 'simpler' guns).

As a regular owner, I'd let the company have the gun back to replace the broken spring.

FWIW, as an armorer for the M&P pistol I've not heard of any notice of a 'bad batch' of trigger springs, but when you think about the many tens of thousands of really inexpensive springs that are shipped to gun companies ... and it's not like individual springs are hand-checked to specifications, right? ... it's not surprising that a bad couple of them might slip through in that huge quantity.

The companies do pay attention to such things, though, which is why they monitor repairs.

Also, another reason to let the company inspect the gun is to make sure that the broken spring coil isn't the symptom of another problem, instead of being just a spring problem.

Also FWIW, the Shield armorer material was just recently approved, and I haven't yet heard whether it'll be a separate class, a supplemental part of the M&P class, or whether currently certified M&P armorers are going to be able to buy the Shield-specific material.

I would be interested to hear from Shield owners experiencing trigger spring breakage the date the test round was fired.

If dates are close it tells me a bad batch of springs.

The Shield and the other M&P's are similar enough that one would think that they'd just tack the Shield onto the M&P "Armorer's" stuff, but.... Same purchase audience, I think, from an LEO position.

I recall some talk about the M&P trigger springs and the little foam "tampon". I wonder if this is related.

I was at the new Fin, Feather, and Fur store today. Some great stuff, and a great layaway plan. Unfortunately, the wife has a layaway plan, too. If I buy another gun, she's going to call the Funeral Director and, well, lay me away.... Meantime, the accountant told my wife what our refund would be.... AARGH....

Regards,

No way to really know how many of which batch of springs were mixed together into the bins used by the factory parts people when they assemble the trigger bars, and then when the production cell workers assemble the guns.
