Default Dents inside my M & P 9c Slide!

What are these? Only 250 rounds and I notice these perfect round "dents" inside the slide! Did I just miss these the first two times I cleaned the gun?!

I have the same on my shield but i have 5 dimples. I thinks its a way for S&W to record how many shields they make and the date time frame. Much like the serial # Also i think it has to do with what type steel they use and when they make changes to the gun. Seems to me i read that soemwhere on this forum. I am sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in soon

I asked about those a couple of years back or more. The guys at the S&W booth at the SHOT Show said they are code markings allowing S&W to identify which sub-contactor machined that slide.

Ok...these answers make sense, but I still wonder how I missed them my first two cleanings! I even ran my finger inside the slide to apply a little protectant and did not see or feel them until today's cleaning. Maybe there was some sort if compound filling the holes. Oh well, thanks for the responses thus far!

They look like a pattern of 6 dots which could produce a goodly number of distinctive patterns or 'letters'. I guess they didn't want to engrave actual letters because it might give away secrets, like maybe Ruger manufacturing the M&P slides.

My understanding was that it marked what machine the parts were made on. So if a problem came up it could be traced back to that machine.

A dent will show up about every 50 rounds. The compound that fills the holes slowly dissipates at a set rate. You actually have dozens of holes in the slide, but the compound in each hole will wear away at 50 shot intervals.

So your slide has 5 holes, and about 250 rounds through it. I have a newer Shield my wife uses and it only has about 150 rounds through it and I can just make out the third dimple showing up now.

An old M&P I have is so full of holes, I had to increase the recoil spring because the slide was so light. S&W will replace the slide when it gets too bad I hear.

Good luck and happy shooting!!!

Ok...thanks for the feedback! Glad to know I was not going blind or crazy. I knew I would have spotted them from the start, so I could not figure how they would just appear all of the sudden. Thanks!

Your M&P had a severe form of acne during it's teenage years.

Relax.

Those markings identify the CNC machine, operator and date of manufacture of the slide, allowing S&W to track any QC issues that might occur during manufacture and be identified at a later date.

What about the filling compound that wears away?? I can't believe they would drill holes in a perfectly good and new slide just to remember who made it... I mean they have serial numbers they can check and all.

No Fastbolt, you are a smart man, and you have all those armorer degrees and all, but you really dropped the ball on this one.

Self-dissapating metal filler compound is the answer.

Oops.

That's what I get for listening to the S&W techs & engineering staff.

When will I ever learn?

They are just throwing you off the track...

The OP nailed it when he said there was a compound in the slide, I just added the self-dissipating part.

The things you can learn here.....

Wow, I have an M&P 9mm, and I just looked at the inside of my slide. I have three dimples/dots, but I have around 700-800 rounds through it. I clean my gun after every shooting and never noticed the dimples. What else am I missing..Maybe I should wear my reading glasses when cleaning..lol..

Dunno. Depends how soon you want the gun to look clean to your eyes.

That's why I find blue/black finishes, and black plastic frames (versus grn/brn), look cleaner, sooner. :P)

Of course, when I use the magnifying lamp at my bench, I can be at cleaning for longer than when I just use my unaided eyes, or even when using my reading glasses.
