I drank the Kool Aid
Good morning all, well I have taken the plunge and purchased an M&P 9 shield to accompany me while my M&P 40 is for colder weather and home defense duty. Luckily I have a good friend right down the road that builds leather holsters in his leather shop, so I got an IWB at the same time (I'm left handed so that can be an issue at times). I have not had the chance to go to my range and run some rounds through it, but my initial thoughts are that this is going to be one sweet CCW, and I got it for $1.00 more than a S&W 642 I was looking at at the time! This makes me look even more forward to this weekend. I'm so excited I just had to write this. Have a great day.

How do you like the trigger? That's the only negative on the shield in my book. Other then that they make an AMAZING carry gun. I love how the body is thin and smooth. The rear sight is sharp and will poke you but that not to big of a problem.

My Shield 9mm is absolutely NOT the best shooting pistol I own. However, it's with me all waking hours of the day. An APEX hard sear made the trigger pull a much nicer experience. Good luck with yours, it really is a nice carry gun in my book.

The Shield is an excellent choice. I love shooting it and carry it everyday, all day, usually in a Remora. The trigger is great to me--I wonder what RichardDBeck doesn't like about it.

For its intended purpose, the Shield is a very good gun.
However, I don't understand these comments:

Good cc weapon. My 40 is an ok to shooter at the range but not my favorite. After about a half dozen mags it begins to wear out my palm. I prefer my 40 cal 4046 for killing paper but it is a lil big n heavy for daily cc use. So I cc the shield and do most target shooting with my all metal framed gun. I find th shield trigger passable for use with a smooth even pull.

More to the point, can you tell us what you don't like about the trigger? Is it all Shield triggers, or just the certain ones you don't like?

Interesting. You'll notice, if you read my post, that I didn't say I dislike the trigger.
I asked the question that way because you said the trigger is great. I'm just curious as to what other triggers you've tried that make you say this one is great?

Compared to my M&P FS. Excessive is anything more than the minimum required to ensure 100% full reset of the trigger. I don't need nor want a running start at my trigger. Nice and smooth. If it must be long, make it smooth. If it must be short, make it crisp. I don't like a long unpredictable trigger with multiple stages.

For what it's worth, here's a 10 second video of my trigger. It has a fairly short take up and then a crisp break requiring moderate force. What's not to like?
Disclaimer: I'm not a professional. My experience is very limited compared to many others on the forum. I shoot about a couple hundred rounds a month--more if ammo is plentiful. My regular handguns include four autos (Shield 9, BG 380, 4006, and Ruger 22/45) and two revolvers (S&W 638 and Taurus 66). Plus I get to shoot handguns owned by my two sons-in-law, which include a Colt 1911 and Beretta 92 A1, and others.

Living under Massachusetts Laws, most semi-auto handguns feel like your pulling the trigger of a DA revolver. I'm lucky to have a Shield with a 'normal' trigger pull, which i find.....well... sweet.....

The Shield trigger, like all M&Ps, is OK for what it is. However, it does have too much take up, a heavy pull weight and too much over travel.
Is it a bad trigger? No, I don't think so, but it can be better. Ransom didn't say this, but to say that it is the "best I've ever shot" is either excessive or you just have limited experience.
When talking of triggers, the worst 1911 has a much better trigger than the best Shield. The design lends itself to be shorter and crisper with less effort required. That, in itself, doesn't make it a better pistol, just better trigger.

I like and shoot my Shield 40 better than:
SW99QA .40 - x
SW990Lc .40 - x
G23 - z
G27 - x
XD9 - y
XD40 - z
XDs .45 - y
x = I've shot a LOT
y = I've shot enough to vividly recall them
z = I've shot a little
My Shield recoil is less than the SW990Lc and G27.
My Shield trigger is less gritty than the SW99/990s with far less "break-in" rounds through it. My groups are better. I do not shoot it "low and to the left." I did (badly) with the SW990Lc.
My Shield groups are as good or slightly better than with a G27.
The Kool Aid is perfect. Not too sweet. Not too tart.

See now, I wouldn't call it Kool-Aid. That would imply that you're doing it blindly. The Shield is a good gun. No need to be ashamed to have one.
There are pros and cons to everything. If you like the Shield, no need to be apologetic for it.

Love my Shield 9mm. Shoots good, holsters well, carries easy. I'd be lying if I said the trigger was better than my Kimber 1911 or any of my single action revolvers. It's on par with the double action pull of my older Ruger P90 (which I always liked).
I like the trigger on the Shield and can hit what I'm aiming at. I like it better than any out of the box Glock or Springfield XD series I've ever shot but definitely not the best trigger in the stable.
However, for a CCW pistol, I'm not sure I want a 2 - 3lb trigger pull.
Jeff
