My new 9mm shield out of the box was hitting to the left at 25 yards from a sand bag rest. The rear sight as installed was not centered but off to the left a bit.
After reading all there is about this issue I blamed myself. So I spent a lot of time practicing good trigger control and dry firing. I am not a new shooter but do realize that grip and trigger control are a challenge on the smaller pistols (I used to have a full size M&P 40 and it was easier to shoot).
After all the practice, I was still shooting to the left.
Decided to try and drift the rear sight against the advice of the owners manual.
Set screw can out just fine. Small amount of red Loctite on it.
Sprayed some Liquid Wrench on the sight and let it sit about 10 minutes.
I made my own drift punch by grinding down an old steel punch. I made it the same width and shape as the rear sight dove tail. Covered the end with 3 layers of electricians tape. The sight started moving after a couple of hard hits. Was not really a problem. I kept looking at the punch tip and replaced the tape a couple of times. I drifted the sight from left to right. I could have easily removed the sight totally but chose to just re-center it.
I ended up with the rear sight just slightly to the right from center, about the same amount it was off originally to the left. 25 yard impact in now at point of aim.
Really happy! I know all guns are different, but mine was not the problem I expected. All of the dry firing has also improved the trigger pull. I was at first considering an Apex kit but don't think I will need it.
Taking your time and having a perfectly shaped punch is important. When I finished, there were absolutely no marks on the sight or slide.
The Shield is really a great gun!
