Default new for 2014 S&W M&P Bodyguard 380

It looks like Smith & Wesson has reworked the Bodyguard 380 and has given it the M&P treatment. With a new slide with the M&P logo, adjustable sights, and now without the built in laser, it is now officially a part of the M&P family.

Product: Model M&P BODYGUARDŽ 380

I owned one, and sold it. I liked it much better than the LCP or TCP....but I didn't trust it.

Did they eliminate the laser? I don't see the buttons. I couldn't tell from the video. If so, I'd sure consider one!

My only issues with the original Bodyguard .380 were the laser, which would not hold zero and the odd appearance with the pelican looking cust cover. This is a vast improvement in appearance. Unfortunately, with the pocket 9mm pistols now, such as the Shield, G26, SIG 290RS, Beretta Nano, etc., I am not sure exactly what need there is for a .380. For those who wish a .380, I cannot see anything wrong with the new M&P Bodyguard .380.

Did they rework the trigger? I dry fired the older version today and the trigger feels like 12 lbs.

I agree that with the size of the small 9mm pistols why spend so much time developing a .380? I think Glock is crazy bring out one when we all want a single stack 9. Why not just bring out the 9 with a .380 barrel?

Because despite all the caliber snobs on various gun forums, 380's are big sellers.

I want one. I was on the fence about one before but now with the laser gone and the placement in the M&P line I am sold.

The original BG380 has second strike capability as well.

Yep, for those who want the small package and light weight with less recoil, the .380 is a good compromise. A 9mm in the same package would be too painful and hard to shoot well for many people. The BG380 is small enough to be a true pocket pistol, unlike the Shield, etc. Yes, some people pocket carry a Shield, but those are exceptions.

I've got a Shield and a BG380 and like having both. I would have gotten the M&P BG380 if that were an option at the time.

Aside from adding "M&P" to the slide, and missing the laser... is there any difference between old and new BG 380's?

Drift adjustable front sight (rear sight already was) and two magazines instead of one.

As much as I like S&W, I think the Beretta Pico would be a better choice for a pocket .380. 0.725 width on the Pico. I can't find the width on the Bodyguard.

I haven't dealt with Beretta in a couple of years, but my last experience with their customer service wasn't positive...and unless it's changed, they don't have a lifetime warranty.

I much prefer to buy new guns from companies like S&W, Ruger, and Springfield, who have great CS, lifetime warranties, and they pay for shipping.

That being said, sometimes another manufacturer has a gun that works best for you...and then you just have to take your chances that you won't need CS. Many people never do...but if there is anything that can go wrong with something I buy, it usually does.

Interesting. I have not heard of the Pico before. Looks like a nice little gun. The BG380 is .75" wide.

I like my Kahr CW380, much better trigger than the LCP and it's about .25" shorter than the LCP or BG380.

Are the sights any better on the m&p bg? they would have to be with no laser (and they cant get much worse). That plus extra mags makes it worth looking at. And you get squiggly grip lines on the rear of the slide!

Looks good. A co-worker has one and he said the trigger pull is looong.
I'd like to shoot one though.

I agree the Pico looks interesting but for some reason the release date keeps getting delayed, it was suppose to be out last August. I'll bet these new Smiths will be showing up in days.
As for the long heavy trigger on the BG I feel this is much safer for a pistol that will likely be carried in a pocket. There is no way this pistol will discharge by accident.

I like the idea of adjustable sights & no laser. The price looks good. If it came in 9mm I'd jump on it as a BUG if the trigger is good & if it were striker-fired with no safety. I don't have a whole lot of problems with .380 but would definitely prefer 9mm.

Not sure why everyone hates the 380 so much. I surely wouldn't want to be shot by one. These are fantastic options for women IMO. My wife doesn't like shooting a 9mm or my xds 45. I don't blame her. But put a 380 in her hands and she can have fun. What the 380 brings is a lower recoil option for people who are new to guns or just plain recoil sensitive. I don't see an issue with this offering. I have a BG380 that i carry once in a while in summer when wearing shorts or running, biking etc... Not my first choice, but it serves a purpose. I know Smith sold tons of BG380's when it first came out.

I've had the original BG380 for a couple of years and love it. It's extremely concealable in just about any weather, and the DAO, very long trigger pull insures that when it fires, you mean it to fire. The design and engineering are very similar to the M&P family. For me, the laser is just a fun gadget. Doesn't bother me that its there.

Does anyone happen to know when this will be available? I can't find it in any retailers yet.

I've got a permit expiring mid-Feb and was hoping to find one of these before then.

Is this a fantasy?

According to S&W web site, this gun is DAO hammer fired.
Why then the need for a manual safety?

I have an LCP. Putting it in a holster almost doubles the thickness of the gun. It has no safety just double action. I want the new M&P Bodyguard because it has a manual thumb safety. I plan to carry it in pocket or with a clip on the side IWB. Is it as reliable as the LCP?
The LCP has terrible sights but it goes bang every time (except for Tulammo).

My wife's older B.G. with laser has been flawless for 500 rounds using any .380 ammo I can find. Including tulammo.

Only thing we don't care about is the trigger pull. Its like 20#s, its not really that bad but it is a long stiff pull.

The wife likes hers enough she want to upgrade to the new version

Howdy, first post here.

Funny, I finally got a hold of a trigger pull gauge and just tested my BG 380 this morning. Pulled it several times, and the result each time was off the end of the 8lb gauge. If the gauge is linear, then it's a little over 10lb.

Anyone know what the spec is on these? If it's out of spec I'll send it back. I did send it back after I first bought it, asking them to make the trigger pull easier since my wife couldn't use the gun. They sent it back and said that they don't do trigger jobs on the gun (yet). But if it's out of spec I think it's a different deal, right?

All guns will vary in trigger pull even if they're the same model. It's just how it is with manufacturing. There are trigger kits you can buy for the BG380 that will lower the trigger pull though. And they are nice because you can always swap it back and return to stock.

I do not like DA only pistols, but I need a pocket pistol to carry on the farm, tractor and mower. I am not going to carry my stainless PPK and take a chance on it being lost or damaged. I looked at all of the .380 pocket pistols, the Bodyguard w/o laser is my favorite in it's price range. Better then the Ruger, Beretta Pico, Taurus, etc. So unless I find a good used PPK cheap, I think I will buy one.
