Hi all, I just bought a new box of PMC 165 grain target ammo and it has some really weird coloring on the casing toward the bottom the coloring doesn't go all the way around on any of the casings just about half way around it. I'm just asking what you guys think it might be or if it might be dangerous to use, I don't want to get hurt or hurt anyone else by using bad ammo.
Sorry for posting this in m&p pistol forum, I also posted this in the ammo section. Moderators can close or delete this thread, once again all apologies.
Cuprous oxide from exposure to oxygen. The cartridges were probably packed nose down in a plastic 'egg carton' inside the box. The base of the case was exposed within the box. The box may have been damp. Lower zinc content in the brass, high temperature, and high humidity will favor formation of Cu2O. Copper jacketed bullets will likewise turn from a shiny pink to a dull orange if left out for several months. Some manufacturers even put the little oxygen absorbing packets in the box with premium sd ammo so they stay shiny. It is totally harmless.
