Default Chip on new M&P barrel!

Hi guys first time posting a thread! I just bought a brand new M&P and though I haven't taken it to the range yet I love just about everything about it! I got home from work today and was inspecting my new toy and noticed a tiny chip in the barrel! I would just like to get some feedback on whether or not this is anything to worry about? Should I contact S&W and send it back for a replacement? Any feedback would be appreciated!
thanks!

You are going to get two types of responses...as this was just asked recently.

The first one, which I fall under, is this is a brand new gun. I'd call S&W and send it back. If I pay for a new car, I don't want to take delivery of it with a scratch on it. I realize the gun (or car) will work absolutely fine even with said defect. But that's the point of buying new.

Now, the second line of thinking will be...why the fuss? It'll shoot fine, it'll do nothing for reliability and/or longevity, so why bother just go shoot it.

That's really your call. But you'll get plenty of responses for both points of view, neither are right or wrong.

I'm in the second camp. If it doesn't effect function I don't bother. That being said, it all comes down to what type of damage it is. A small chip on the outside of a barrel or a large chunk of something missing. Neither might effect function but I wouldn't want a giant gouge in the slide or a huge hole in the grip

After you shoot the gun for a while, there will be wear which is natural to use, and possibly scratches from handling, cleaning, and holster wear.

If mine, I would not take the time or the risk of sending it back to S&W (possible loss in mail or damage), as long as the gun works properly.

But that's just me. I tend to favor function.

Welcome to the forum!

I'd send it back. S&W seems to have poor QC issues regarding finish since the rollout of the M&P. It's the only way they'll learn, hit them in the pocketbook.

Thanks for the replies. I gave S&W an email and requested a replacement barrel be sent to me but, if they want me to send it in I'm just going to ignore it. Since its a tiny "blemish" that can barely be seen when the slide is pulled back or when its stripped. After inspecting it further I'm sure it wont effect the performance and reliability. Once again thank you for the feedback!

When I take delivery on a new car, I inspect the interior and exterior - you know, the visible stuff.

If the transmission housing or transaxle has a mold mark or paint run on it, it goes undetected. And I would love to see my dealer's face if I asked for the parts to be replaced because of these "defects".

It is impossible to say how long they will have it if you send it back. I'll bet it will be more than a week, however.

If you don't mind buying it and then immediately not having it to shoot for an indeterminate time, then send it back.

So yes, I'm in the second camp of thought. Jes choot it!
