Question on M&P 9L
Question for experts on the M&P 9L:
I found a M&P 9L for sale on the internet, new, with SKU 305701. (This SKU does not appear on the S&W web page).
Is this an older model M&P 9L that is being sold "new, old stock"? Would it have the new, higher twist rate barrel?
Thanks in advance.

I believe the new barrel went into effect Oct. 2012. You can ask the seller what the date is on the envelope that contains the test bullet. That will tell you when it was made.

They still call the CORE 5" a 9L Product: Smith & Wesson M&P9L Pro Series C.O.R.E.
But they don't call the 5" non core an L, curious.

This model was current through 2013.

Look on page 12.
To learn how much older it may be, as others have said either the serial number or the fired casing envelope will tell all!

Usually SKUs' that start with "3" are LE packages and include 3 mags and sometimes the night sights.

Thanks all. Yep, it is the LE version from Bud's that I am looking at. I would like the "better" barrel, and think the odds are good this one was made recently... at least since January of 2014...

Just checked Buds Police. The 9L is out of stock. Buds Guns has the 9 Pro series and the price went up on that by $40 in the past two days. Also I believe that the 9L has a 6.5 lb trigger and the 9Pro & 9 CORE have 4 to 5.5 lb triggers. Am I correct?

It's advertise 6.5lbs but it's not. My Lyman digital gage read over 8lbs. I bought a 40FS, 45FS, 9C, & 9L in less than 6 months, all of them read over 8lbs of trigger gage.

I ordered the M&P 9L (SKU 305701LE) from Bud's Police Supply two days ago. I see today it is still (back?) in stock.
I'm interested in other people's experiences with this pistol, which is definitely in the minority in terms of all M&Ps sold.
I am okay with the 9L trigger pull out of the box -- since I will add an Apex hard sear and trigger, and round the corners on the striker block. That should take it down to around 5 lbs or so, maybe a little less.
Fingers crossed it has a newer build date, and a barrel with a dimple underneath -- meaning the new twist rate. A trigger bar with an "H" would be a plus, too. Most of all, hope it shoots well... should be able to take it out for a test drive next weekend... range report to follow.

I bought a M&P9L when they were first introduced. My buddy bought one also at the same time. We compared our guns to his 5" Pro and were shocked to find that the front of the slides were different.
These were LE guns and came with the factory night sights.
What I found out was all the time I had with the M&P9 made the balance of the longer M&P9L feel "Different, in an odd sort of way". I didn't shoot it any better than the shorter M&P9.
I ended up selling the M&P9L off. Took a while as the market for it was much softer than had it been just a regular full size gun.
I was surprised to see S&W reintroduce the M&P9L, as it was discontineud for a period.

This one comes with 3 mags and night sights - for $463 (minus $50 rebate) which is, all things considered, a pretty good value.
Have ordered a Warren Tactical rear/fiber front for the 9L. Am I right that the sights on this gun are different (higher in the front?) from a regular FS M&P?

The new M&P9L arrived. No dimples on the barrel, but the "H" on the trigger bar. Made (at least, test fired) on 30 January 2014.

Good to know, thanks for the info. I've been pondering the same purchase, visiting Bud's sight for the past week or two. Finally went ahead and ordered one on 4/12. Good thing I did, it was out of stock right after I ordered; I must have got the last one!
Still hasn't shipped (I paid with e-check), but I should have it in-hand by late next week.
How does it shoot?

Still haven't shot it yet! But did install a Warren Tactical rear sight and an Apex Forward Set sear and trigger. Wow. Super smooth and about a 4.5 lbs trigger pull. Hope to get it to the range soon!

That is an LE SKU'd 5" 9mm with factory NS's and three mags. S&W still makes them and we stock them. Our has all latest internal to include the barrel.

No. The new twist rates really didn't start showing up in LE SKU'd M&P's till 2013.

First trip to the range, 150 rounds later, and very happy with the M&P9L (proof tested on 30 Jan 14). It is very accurate.
Strangely, the 9L seems to clang at the end of the slide recoil a bit more than the 9: could it be the length allows the powder to burn longer in the barrel, and the bullet to get to a higher velocity, generating more recoil? Or is the heavier slide hitting the slide stop with greater mass? Whatever it is, it has something to do with physics. And it is not a major problem, just a minor perceived difference.

All of the above.
