Default Generations

Just curious....

Are the M&P pistols considered 4th Generation or did the generations stop with the Third Generation and this is just all new (relatively speaking, of course).

Even more specifically, and emphasis on I think this is correct but I'm asking, if you discuss the pistol "generations" you can, for instance, start with a Model 59 and track its changes through the various 59xx models.

Using that analogy, what would a 5903 be in the M&P line, or a 6906, or is it "not done" in that manner?

Thanks.

I'd be interested in the different generations of M&Ps as it relates to barrel upgrades.
Also, the M&P Shield. Are we now into the second generation Shield?

Improvements to certain parts of a gun do not count as another generation. There would need to be serious changes such as a model # change to be a second generation. Like a 59 became a 459 which became a 5904. That's 3 generations. A Shield is still a Shield even if there are improvements to the gun. The M&P line refers to polymer frame guns, so 5903's, or 6906's are not M&P guns.GARY

What about the BG? Does M&P designated body guard qualify?
