Default Clean after X rounds

Good evening all -

As most of you will have guessed by now, I'm a new Smith & Wesson gun owner; a M&P Shield in particular.

When I first bought my Glock years ago, I asked this question and it sparked a good conversation. So, here we go...

When using an M&P Shield you'd clean if after how many rounds at the range?

Every trip...field strip and clean. 10 rounds or 100+ rounds.

I clean a new gun before I even shoot it. Then, after every trip to the range, it gets cleaned again, whether I fire one shot or 100. I just can't stand the thought of one of my weapons sitting around with carbon and other residue in and on it.

Don't have a Shield myself but an M&P 40 FS and several other handguns and rifles. I clean after every range outing. Usually at least 100-200 rounds. That's just me though. I kind of enjoy it and it seems to relax me.

Depends on how sooty and/or dirty the ammo was, some is much worse than others.

If it's an edc piece, I'd clean it after taking it out to range.

It probably got enough lint and other stuff inside to begin with to warrant a clean and lube. Some lubes can sometimes evaporates more quickly than others.

Above two posts summarize my thoughts.

Hey, at least you didn't ask what kind of lube/cleaner folks used

I tend to clean after each range trip, which may include 50-100 rounds in my 9c and a good couple hundred in my buckmark. I figure a few minutes of cleaning will help them last for years.

I clean after every range trip. If I was shooting again tomorrow, then maybe not unless I felt it was particularly dirty.. But if you don't know when you are going again, or if you intend to carry the gun and trust your life with it, I say clean it every time you shoot it.

It doesn't take long, and I think it's fairly relaxing.

"Clean after a trip to the range" seems to be the consensus. What about when you don't go to the range?

The Shield is a carry gun. Most of the guys I know who carry don't shoot as much as I think they should. I just went shooting with a friend who hasn't fired his carry gun in over a year.

What about lint or dirt that builds up over time? If you carry a gun, it will happen. So, I recommend at least a quick wipe down every week if you carry the gun.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

I shoot a lot. So, I clean the gun every time I go to the range, but only clean the bore about every 500 rounds or so.

My Gramps told me : if you shoot it - you clean it.

Worked for him. Works for me.

As stated above, I pretty much clean all my weapons after every range trip. However, the quantity and quality of ammo may affect how intense the cleaning is.

With handguns, I do a basic field strip, Hoppe's #9 and Rem-oil each time. Not every single time do I "go to town" on the bore, though.

I like to at least clean the bore after each trip to the range, and field strip and clean the rest every 100 rounds or so. Even that's probably more than it needs, but an antique car fanatic is going to change his oil every 1000 miles or less...so what do you think gun fanatics are going to do?

It doesn't matter which firearm, brand, type or how many rounds, I clean every gun after I get home from the range.

After every range trip no matter how many rounds fired.
A carry pistol gets cleaned once a week regardless of being shot. It gets wiped down daily with a silicone gun and reel cloth.

Will add I also clean all my other guns twice a year even if they have just been sitting in the safe.

I shoot at home and sometimes I shoot a mag or two everyday. I'll clean after a few 100 rounds but certainly not every time I fire the gun. If one of my pistols is going to be put up for a while I'll detail clean it before storage.

I do the same with my guns unless I'm running a test for some reason

Same as I was taught when I was young. If you shoot it clean it. If you handle it, wipe it down.

I guess if you think of it as a chore, you'll do it less often. I enjoy it and its just a part of going to the range for me.
Most modern semis can function fine for several hundred rounds.

The Shield is my EDC, so when shooting at the range, I run a bore snake through it before putting it back in my pocket and leaving the range, then give it a cleaning when I get home.

As for my other pistols (G19, G26, XD Service and XDMc)... They can easily go several range trips before they get a real good scrubbing.
Euro-guns don't seem to mind running 'hot & dirty'.

All good answers and by cleaning your weapon every time your done at the range we can avoid any false accusations of firing our carry weapon in public or anywhee else. Then when someone says "shots fired" they will find a clean M&P

The two pistols I shoot most are a polymer Sig 9mm and my S and W stainless 1911. I clean the 1911 after every shoot. It gets testy if I don't. The Sig? I don't know at what point it would begin to want a cleaning, it shoots filthy dirty as well as it does clean, so I settled on every 500.

I might be a bit lazier than some of the others here. I shoot at least once every two weeks, and an average range trip is only around 100 rounds. I feel like cleaning it every week is a bit excessive, so I typically end up cleaning it about ever 2 trips (so about every 200 to 400 rounds I would say).

I have never felt like it was excessively dirty, and it has never malfunctioned (not even once).
