Multiple guns
Last weekend I traded my G19 4th Gen for a M&P Shield 9mm.
Here we are a week later, and I wished I'd kept my G19, AND simply bought the M&P Shield.
I used to think that I only needed one gun (sort of like a car,m who needs two?), and thus why have multiple. But, I've been reading and commenting on this forum all week, and I've learned that it is almost impossible to simply own just one gun...
Honestly, what was I thinking. So, with that, I think I need to look for a M&P Full (not the compact, but the bigger one, sort of same side as my old G19). I guess this is how you learn, and then you're down a rabbit hole buying guns and accessories for them
My missus is looking to get another Ruger pistol, 38 Special. She loves that gun.
Is this how it starts? I hear people that get tattoo's say it starts with one, and then before you know it, you're covered...

The answer is pretty much, yeah.
To both questions....

In the cycling world this is called "N+1 Syndrome"; seems like human nature. My wife and I have just started shooting handguns. We each have an M&P 22, she also shoots an M&P 9mm while I have a .40 cal. We're not going to CCW so I don't see a compact or sub-compact in my future. While I'm fascinated by some of the other handguns out there (Glocks, various 1911s, Sig, ...) I am going to resist unless the number of hours I'm working in my retirement job kicks up.

Its hard to stop once you start. A couple of years ago I bought the first new gun In several years, a 40c. I came here to this Forum looking for some info & I saw some pics of 3rd Gens, & I was hooked! I've got a "few" of them now. It just kind of snowballs on you.

Oh boy. You're going down the slippery slope. You'll never be completely done. Unless you swear off guns completely (don't. Lol) this is a disease that will stick.

The missus and I are off to a gun shop an hour away from us this weekend. This should be interesting. I'm taking my credit card with me!

My only bit of advice is: take cash, not your credit card. I only buy my toys (after the first one, they're all toys) with cash in hand. This way you don't get underwater on something or end up paying a ton on interest charges. As my WWII vet dad says,
"Cash talks and ********* walks".
You always get a better deal when paying with cash, the vendor is spared the CC transaction fees.
Have fun.
Stay Safe.

You need to remember that there are a lot of enablers here. You see and hear something about a gun, and next thing you know you're looking for one. And the cycle continues..........

I sometimes think that there should be a sign over the entrance of a good gun shop, saying something like: ABANDON ALL HOPE( of financial solvency)YE WHO ENTER HERE!!!

How do you get by with so few?
It really is a disease. I actually have a line item in my monthly budget for gun stuff. This is how I save up for things. If it's not in the budget, I don't buy it. I've broken my budget a couple of times.

The only time I will ever trade off a gun is if it is a dog and can not be fixed without spending a bunch of money. I've only encountered two such guns in my 30+ years of gun ownership.

To me guns are like tools. Each fills a specific need.
I own a hammer and a saw. Both for different purposes, but both are tools.
I own more than one gun. A Glock 19 and a Shield actually make a great combination.

i started with a sigma for home defense ...then i bought a mossberg 715t(much like the 15-22, but junk)...then i needed one i could carry so i bought a 40c...then i sold the junk mossberg to buy a better 15-22..and my wife decided she wanted to carry so after about a year to decide, we bought her a shield...which led me to need a shield since it was easier to carry...and that filled my need for both my wife and i to have a home defense handgun...the 586 that i inherited from dad 2 years ago still has just as many rounds through it as the day i brought it home from mom's...it's my "safe queen"
i'm done.............................................for this month anyway...

.45 Compact
Take a look at the M&P .45 Compact: same size as the Glock 19 with 9 rounds of .45ACP. It's a very soft shooter, and if I could only have one pistol I wouldn't complain if it were this one.

Certainly not less.
OP, always good to buy outright rather than trade/sell and risk losing something you were happy with/you'll want back.
Also good to buy with cash too - for many reasons - like not buying more than you can afford when the sickness has you momentarily delirious.
Good luck this weekend.

I used to joke that I had enough guns to outfit a small city's SWAT team. Then my wife made me inventory them for insurance purposes.
I was shocked to discover that I have enough guns to outfit a small city's SWAT team.

Got my 1st gun a bit over a year ago, an old Colt. Loved shooting it but thought I should get something new to 'save' the old colt since it was a family piece. So a Buckmark was added. Then figured id like to get a wee bit more oomph so picked up a 9c. I really enjoy it so........
And my tattoos seemed to start the same way, only diff is i wasn't 50 when I got my first ink lol

I didn't need a gun. I had to get the girl friend to sell her's....to me. Then I felt safe. She is a hell of a shot. That was April of 2005. I felt safe enough to break up with her then.
The disease sat dormant until March of 2011. It really began to escalate then. I got worried about leaving all the guns in the house. Now I own a safe which is bulging.
It has been fun. Like drugs or alcohol with a lower monitory loss. You see the guns go up in value if you resist impulse buying and build a decent collection. S&W revolvers have been doing better than the stock market.
Go slow, enjoy the ride, drag it out. Cash is king. Plastic will sink you if you're not careful.
BTW I am over 50 and am in remission. The signs and symptoms are almost gone.

I don't care for the M&P 9s since I haven't owned one that can compare to the 45s or other brands of 9s in the accuracy department. I did just pick up another barely used M&P FS45 just yesterday for no reason other than I think it's the most comfortable poly 45 on the market, with great accuracy to boot. I mumbled "what am I going to do with two of them." while looking it over and the store clerk said" Well, you'll have one for each hand." I see it as a back-up since I'm using my first one for home defense.
Owning one gun is hard to do if you like shooting them. I don't want to even tell you the number of firearms I've gone through over the years to settle on what I like best.

I went to the range today, and instantly saw three guns that I'd like to add to my collection.
- M&P Full
- Ruger; like the full M&P
- Dessert Eagle (just to shoot it at least once!)

I have traded guns only once.. I don't regret the decision. The gun I traded, I tried for almost a year to like it and to get it to work right. I never could get it to behave. It was not unsafe, I would never trade an unsafe gun. It tore primers and would not hit POA. Nobody could get it to hit POA. I traded it for my 9c and I have not looked back since.

Agreed x100.
I've traded 3 and sold 1. I regret all of them. All the trades were before I had kids and thought I'd never have any. Swapped a 870 Wingmaster lightweight magnum 20 gauge for a compound bow once (let that sink in for a minute) - how I'd like my son to have that now. It won't happen again.

Of the few guns I've owned, I've sold two. One I regret, one that I was glad to get rid of. I sold a Browning .380, made in Belgium, that I still kick myself over. The one I don't regret was a SW40VE, that had the worst trigger I've ever used. The trigger pull was horrible. I actually sold it for more than I had in it, so I was happy with that.

I always had a good reason to sell or trade guns at the time, but looking back regret each and every one!
For new guns....I've started to count them in numbers of new safes I've had to buy to store them.

I just kept thinking one doesn't need more than one gun. I understand protection and enthusiasts. But, my Mum sort of always encouraged me to not 'over do it'. Now I think to myself, I work hard, I pay my bills, I only socially drink and I don't smoke ANYTHING, thus why not have more than one gun. I should have kept my G19, and merely added the M&P Shield and conceal carry.
All that to say, I will probably get an M&P Full (not sure what it is really called) at some stage. Might as well 'match'

I've been buying, and selling and/or trading (some) for close to 35 years now.. always in search of ...... something better...... many I now regret letting go....... but rarely have I lost money when compared to inflation......
On some; the current value is 3-4-5 times what I paid on pretty run of the mill Smiths in the 80-90s.........sold one this year for 4X what I paid for it just 2 years ago......even have one a RM worth 15-20X what I bought it for in this century........
All that said I'm not saying guns are a "good" investment tool to replace your 401K... but if you buy well and take good care of "your investments" you in all likelihood won't lose any money and have a lot of fun in the process.
Sure a better deal than the 3 nice film cameras from the 80-90s and a bunch of lens we have in a closet somewhere.....LOL
