Default M&P 40fs - which component is the S/N on?

Wife and I have both 9mm and 40 cal M&P. We're not collectors, but intend to keep and exercise these handguns for some time. I'm interested in competition.

My question: Since I'm in CA I wouldn't be able to either a)buy a replacement handgun or b)have the component hosting the serial number replaced. Neither circumstance is likely, but I'd like to be forewarned. So - is the component containing the S/N likely ever to need replacement?

BTW, worst case scenario is probably a warranty replacement.

Probably not, the lower part that contains the S/N has replaceable guide blocks (not sure if that's the proper term, but it's the metal pieces that the slide rides on). All the other mechanical parts are replaceable as well. Probably the only time the lower frame would need replacing would be due to damage (either external by running over it with a forklift, or internal by some kind of ammunition failure) neither of which is likely in normal usage.

The only component bearing a serial number is the polymer frame. The two steel block assemblies and all other components can be freely replaced. I have heard of a few frames having issues, but mostly, it seems, due to non-factory ammo use.

Makes me curious. If you damage the frame and need to order a replacement do you get a new S/N? A frame only wouldn't have to come through an FFL, would it? The .40 cal M&P are off our roster after 5/18 at which point a CA FFL won't be seeing any.

I cannot speak to CA. I did have a gun replaced by another manufacturer though. I had sent my gun in for repair and they elected to replace. They handled the transfer of the SN within the federal system and I was responsible for the state level reporting. I got the impression that because this was a repair, they had greater leeway than for other kinds of transactions.

YMMV though so CHECK your local laws.

A replacement frame would be considered a new firearm which would mean a new number and it would have to come through an FFL. If it was a warranty repair, S&W may reimburse you for the costs.

This is what Sig says about CA service and replacement. They do not mention if a replacement would need to go through a FFL

- SiG owners may send their guns (on or off roster models) to SiG directly. SiG will return the guns directly to the SiG owner as well. There is NO longer any requirement to use a FFL for shipping.

- If a gun sent to SiG for warranty work and SiG determine the gun must be replaced with a new gun, the company MUST replace the old gun with a new California compliant model, ie...loaded chamber indicator and magazine disconnect gun that is on the current roster.

M&Ps are going the way of the Dodo in CA. Such is life on the left coast.
