Default TRITIUM OR FIBER OPTIC SIGHTS?

Which do you prefer? I have a full size 45 that came with painted dots, which I repaint every so often using my own special mix of glow paint & super white automotive paint. My mix works pretty well but only last about 2 cleaning cycles before I have to touch them up. I stopped in the gun shop today & held a pro with fiber optic green front in 1 hand & a trijicon equipped m&p in my other hand. Yes the lights were on, but the fiber rod pops a whole lot more than the trijicons. The trijicons were actually harder to see than regular white painted dot sights in daylight. How do fiber optic rods do with cleaning chemicals? I really like the trijicon HDs with the orange ring around the tritium insert but the price is nearly half of a new m&p 9. I had a hi viz brand fiber optic post on my m&p 15 & it became dull, I'm guessing from cleaning chemicals. What's a good mix of night & DAY visibility that will last?

My choice was to not decide. I went with both.

Tritium works in the dark. FO does not.
For daytime shooting, FO. For low light/no light...tritium.

Check out Ameriglo, they have a bunch of different sight combos. Not quite as expensive as the actual Trijicon brand.

I had an FS with Trijicon tritium sights that I sold for a Pro Series 5" with green fiber optic front sight. Neither really works all that well for me. The tritium proved too dim to be really useful. The green fiber in the new gun doesn't pop for me like the red does on my Ruger MK III or I have on my shotgun.

Given my experiences with these two guns, I'd just stick with the stock irons because I don't see a significant advantage for me. But my wife has been asking me to put some fiber optics on her M&P though.

What'smechaniclbility of the TFO sights? Can a competent, mechanically skilled person with the proper tools, or close to them, install TFOs without breaking them?

I installed them with no problems.

Getting the old sights out was a bit of a chore, but putting new ones in was a cake walk.

They are not difficult to install if you have a clue. The trick is knowing a few little things.

Take the original sights out from left to right. Install the new ones right to left.

When installing the new front sight, use a flat file and take material off the bottom of the sight until it fits in the dove tail half way by hand. Then press it in the rest of the way. You can use a punch to hammer it in. Just be sure to place the punch against the dove tail and not the post.

Using a sight mover is much preferred. That way there is no shock to the sight. Less chance of damaging the tritium vial.

Truglo tfo. Best of both worlds. Let a lgs with the tool (mgs 318 is the part number) replace the sights. Not worth trying to save 30 imo, especially on the front sight...its a bear.

I added a set of Trijicon HD to my Glock 30SF and they have spoiled me. They are one of the few sights I can shoot well without wearing my glasses. It isn't so much the bright front, which is a plus, but the wide U notch in the rear. As I've gotten old it is harder and harder to shoot open sights of any type. With the HD I can still make out and quickly center the front sight.

I've used both. For a working gun, tritiums still have the edge if night sights are needed. FO is better suited to range and competetion. I have no experience with the dual systems like VTAC or Truglos, but if they work for well for an individual, they're an option.

I choose tritium sights over fiber optic every time. It's all about durribility. FOs are great until one of the tubes flies out. And Mr. Murphy will see to it that happens when you need the sight most.
My favorite sights are Trijicon HD sights with the orange front. I have a 9c at the gunsmith getting them installed now.

Somebody help me here. If you have tfo's or any other kind of night sights, you still need a white light to be able to see what you are shooting at...right?

I think have narrowed it down to the ameriglo operator style. They look identical to the TRIJICON HDs but the rear sight isn't serrated, and the ameriglos are cheaper. When I was at 1 gun shop yesterday the ameriglo hangers were pretty much all empty, only had glock sights left. I wonder if that's a sign? The trijicon, meprolight & hi viz hangers were still stocked.

Nothing wrong with Ameriglo sights. The serrations on the Trijicon HD sights just add in keeping glare down.

I really like the look of the rounded notch rear sight. Looks like the front & rears come together better, you can still have 3 dots & the front dot will fill in the rear notch to make a perfect picture. Wish I could try before I buy!
