Default S&W 45 Identification Assistance

Well, you guys certainly helped me with the S&W 38CTG last night so here is another Smith & Wesson but this one is a 45 caliber. This one is marked with SN# 98376 on the barrel, cylinder and on the butt.

This is definitely marked "US Army Model 1917" on the butt wich hopefully the pictures will show, top left side of the frame has a very small marking that appears to look like a vase with some type of leaves coming out of it (yes, I know this sounds odd).

Also pictured is the original holster with the S&W 45, old family heirloom and this belonged to my great uncle who passed away back around 1975. I have had the gun since.

Bluing looks pretty darn good to my novice eye but you guys are the pros at this. Any help identifying the age and approximate current value would be greatly appreciated.

Don't beat me up if i have my terminology wrong, I'm trying.

Thanks all for your help.

Not an expert, just a novice here, but I am going to go out on a limb and say it is a US Army Model 1917, I don't see the S&W logo so I am going to guess it is a Colt Revolver.

Here is a link with more info.

You have the ID correct. It is about halfway through the production run, so an early-mid 1918 ship date is likely. The stamping you mention is the US Army Ordnance acceptance mark, a flaming bomb (flowers would not have been thought appropriate for this use ). From what I can see of the holster it does not appear to be a USGI model.

Aside from the chips on the wood stocks it is remarkably well-preserved, better than 98% of the 1917s I've seen. I would guess it to be in the $11-1200 range. Be sure to document any history you may still have about it. Hope this is helpful.

Gun Nails and Murphy Dog, thanks for your input and yes, that falls right in line with what I know about the history of the gun. We had to move my great aunt and uncle to a nursing home many years ago and I had always heard stories about my Uncle's "Gun from the War" as my family referred to it. I believe he was US Infantry in WWI but not sure.

Alan, thank the Lord I did not refer to it as "flowers" or I would never show up here again. The marking of the "bomb" is so very small I had to get a magnifying glass out to get an idea of what it might be.

Gun Nails, it definitely has "Smith and Wesson D.A. 45 on the barrel, believe it is on the left side but don't have it with me at the moment.

Again, thank you both for the assistance, pretty sure I would not sell it for $11.00 despite the chip in the stock! Kidding of course, this will be passed down to my sons one of these days.

Thanks all.

That's a beauty! You had your decimal in the wrong place, though... I think Murph is saying $1100.00.

Default A Little Further Info

Hey Gunnails,
I looked at your link from wikipedia on the 1917 S&W 45 and they had an picture of the moon clips. I have and old Iver-Johnson box marked "Trailsman Snub" Model 66S, Serial No: K15792.

In it was two half moon clips loaded, along with a box of 22LR. Never can tell what kind of surprises you will find in old boxes. Thanks for putting that link in the post to Wikipedia, I had not thought about looking there for info.

Again guys, appreciate the help. Much appreciated.
