Default M&P9"L" Pro Series CORE vs. M&P9 Pro Series CORE? Different Look On Slide Same Gun?

So I have seen a different look on this gun in amny pics, reviews, videos, etc.

Once shows the slide saying M&P9L Pro Series (in fancy write cursive writing) CORE ( Do Know The L is for Long Slide) .............

And another that says M&P9 (no "L") Pro Series (stamped in slide) CORE.

I am assuming the first is the older version and look that says L with the cursive Pro Series?

Is there Any difference between these two other then how it looks? Internals, Barrel, trigger, etc. etc.???

Pictures of what I am talking about below.

Thanks for the info (I'm picking up mine and I want to make sure I don't something old that may be dated with not as good parts etc.)

Whats The Difference In These Two???

M&P9L (Cursive) Pro Series CORE Has the "L" for Long Slide and the unstamped white cursive Pro Series writing....

M&P 9 (Stamped) Pro Series CORE This pic IS of the 5" Long Slide, but there is no L now with it all stamped in slide....

The differences would be the barrel which is now a 1:10 twist, the newer trigger transfer bar, and possibly the new slide lock. (mine is 6/13 and doesn't have the slide lock, but does have the new trigger bar and did have the newer barrel).

So all new ones look like yours Bkreutz?

The ones with the L and white writing is the old version?

When did this production change occur?

Mine is the current production. I don't know when they changed.

The pictures on the S&W website show the Core with the 9L roll marks and the script "Pro Series", it's the same picture that was there a year ago when I got mine. Mine is the version that doesn't say "L" and the "Pro Series" is roll marked into the slide. I figured it was just an old picture that they hadn't got around to changing. I have a hard time figuring out that website.

Ya I assumed the same exact thing ... Figured that was what it First looked like when they started making it so that's the picture they used ... but when it changed (maybe last year or so sounds like) like you said they just kept the same pic.

Unnerving for me a little for the fact what comes in is the gun I have to keep or I pay 25% fee ... I would be pissed if I got an old one and had to pay $175 cause I told em No I don't want an old friggin gun you know.

One reason I hate special ordering **** like this with changes and they are not ssay a Gen change to where you order the new Gen like Glock you know ... Then if you get an old one your screwed .... Like paying for a Gen4 Glock and getting a Gen3 and them saying sorry it;s yours now or you pay 25%

And with S&W still showing the old model it takes away me being able to say Hell No You Ordered Me An Old One .... when it still shows the same old pic on their website.

Hopefully I get something all new I'm good to go ... guess I'll find out when it arrives, I just wanted to know what to look for is all. But if it has the 9L and Script Pro Series I'm gonna pitch a fit big time ... I'll be damned if I pay full price for an old gun with old parts and pay full price a "New" version and get something old you know.

Where did you order yours from? I doubt S&W has any of the old ones still in inventory. I think all they did was use the same slide as the pro series. Maybe originally they wanted to have a different "look" for the Core but then reconsidered and realized that most of the people who would be shooting them couldn't care less about the external appearance (I know I don't and it's not a topic that comes up at any of the matches I participate in).

I ordered from my local FFL who ordered it from one of there dealers somewhere in Reno, NV.

So I have no clue how much stock they run though from this place they ordered it from.

I don;t care AT ALL about the look of the slide ... more about what is NOT upgraded like the barrel, trigger parts, etc. if for some weird ol' reason I ended up with the old look ... I would know I'm paying full price for a gun that has old internals that have since been upgraded you know.

Just be good to know when they made this change so I know I got the new stuff ... anyway to see the barrel and know you got the new 1:10 Twist? Or know if it's the transfer bar or slide lock?

I want to make sure what I get is "Current Gen" and has everything it's suppose to that is new (since I'm paying for "new").

I've been thinking about this since last night. I don't recall ever seeing the Core with the script "Pro Series" white lettering in person. The only place I've seen it is in advertizing. The Core was first available late summer 2012, I looked at a few videos, on the S&W site they show the white lettering in the pictures, but when they show Jerry M shooting it, it doesn't have the lettering. I looked at a video (again by Jerry M) that was made 2/13, he is shown using one with the white lettering S&W M&P C.O.R.E. Review by Jerry Miculek - YouTube

looking at another video that was made in June of 2013, he's using one that doesn't have the lettering. S&W M&P C.O.R.E. review update with Jerry Miculek - YouTube.

I think since you've already ordered it, no sense in spending any time worrying about it. It will be a great shooter and I suspect it will have all the current parts (I still wonder if the Core ever had any of the previous versions of the parts) I've got over 50K mostly trouble free rounds through mine (broke a trigger return spring at ~ 40K).

Ya ... But both of those videos show the white script "Pro Series" in both of em.

More then likely cause they are same gun both videos of course. There are TONS of the CORE's out there with the old white lettering if you just google M&P9 Pro Series CORE and click on images ... a whole lot.

I just was hoping to not get something old is all ... I'm headed today to the gun shop, they called and said it's in so I will know in a few hours anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to reply ... I will let you know hwo it turns out.

Does the "new trigger bar" include the Glock type safety blade in the trigger (Bkreutz's in post #2)? I'd be more interested in that mechanical difference than the style of the trademarks.

No, the trigger bar is separate from the trigger. That's an Apex polymer trigger in my picture.

All looks good ... New slide look and test shot at S&W in January!

In jail for 10 days .... All should be good with this one I think.

So more your on your APEX trigger ... Easy install? Does it help with reset or did you install the RAM as well?

I know many say the Apex parts are like night and day so I'm thinking about just ordering and getting used to that instead of the stock trigger ... Thoughts?

Any more info you can provide on that would be great.

The Apex is night and day, I installed the FSS and the polymer trigger. I did not install the RAM because I don't shoot to reset (too slow). Hardest part is picking which trigger return spring to use. I ended up re-using the stock spring which gave me a 4# trigger. You still need to file/sand/stone the part of the trigger bar that pushes on the striker block to get rid of the serrations from the manufacturing process (or shoot a couple of thousand rounds which will do the same thing). There have been a number of threads here that have talked about the Apex trigger and sear kits. Have fun with your new pistol. I couldn't imagine having to wait 10 days to take possession. I'm used to impulse buying I guess, I see it, I like it, I buy it, and I walk out with it.

I put the apex fss kit with aluminum trigger in mine as well as the ram. Made it a whole new gun. There is an install video on YouTube from apex. I have never had my gun apart before or anything like it and it took me a little under an hour including to take it back apart and install the factory trigger spring. Ended up with a 3.5 lb pull. Also get the armorer block. Makes it way easier to work on.

Thanks for the info ... I didn't know anything about that Apex Armorer Block ... looks as if it would make doing small gunsmithing stuff on your M&P (is made for glock as well) a lot easier.

Not sure yet ... I may wait to see if the trigger breaks in and feels okay after a while I dunno.

I am not doing anything competition ... just plinking at the range and trying to hit the spots and get good groups ... so I would assume the reset may not be needed and who knows maybe the trigger neither for that matter really.

I think I'm gonna save for an optic really ... then think about the other stuff maybe.

Just looking forward to getting her out of jail and pumping some lead through her is all ... now I gotta start stocking up on 9mm ... geez these prices are nuts.

Hey Bkreutz ... how do like that Deltapoint? I'm thinking if I don;t cheap out and get a PA or Fastfire III I may step and go DeltaPoint2 ... but that about my max money I will spend on and optic.

Curious how it's working for you and if you have tried others?

Curious how it's working for you and if you have tried others?
I've used a C-more and think it's equal to the Deltapoint. I have 6 months and over 20K rounds through it. Everybody makes a big deal out of the Deltapoint II but once I got the dot zeroed, it hasn't moved (I zeroed it, removed the sight and tightened the lock screws, then put it back on). I'm still on the original battery even though I have 2 spares in my range bag. The battery can be changed in less than a minute. So the "improvements" on the II are (IMO) made for consumers perceived needs rather than a real issue. The reason I mention this is that since the II is now out, the remaining stock of I's (is that a word?) could see prices dropping. Here's where I got mine, compare this price to what you have to pay for a DII Leu Delta Point 7.5 Moa Reflex

Thanks for the info.

I am tossing around trying out the Burris FastFire II

It sits a TINY bit higher (nothing major at all it seems" and doesn;t co-witness perfect with the irons but that means nothing to me really .. I guess having that option is good but you can still see them from what I have been told if ever needed, just not in the filed of view as much is all.

Not sure if the DP or other are worth the extra $150+ dollars over the Burris when everyone who has used it seems to like it and it works fine for a little over $200 bucks.

I got some time to decide but really it's gonna be between going with the FastFire II or saving for the DeltaPoint II.

I am assuming the first is the older version and look that says L with the cursive Pro Series?

Is there Any difference between these two other then how it looks? Internals, Barrel, trigger, etc. etc.???
The CORE is a competition model (Core is an acronym for Competition Optics Ready Equipment). The slide is set up to receive just that, competition optics.

The Pro Series (I have one in .40 S&W) has a different trigger than the standard M&P's and I believe a different rifling in the barrel. That being said, mine still benefited from an Apex trigger and sear block upgrade. Sweet shooting handgun it is!

Why the 7.5 MOA ? Don't know anything about these sights. I'll be picking up my 5" CORE on Tuesday.

7 MOA??? I think you may be referring to the DP "Delta" triangle red-dot ... that is a larger MOA due to it's size and not being a Dot but being a triangle.
The Red"Dot" is a 3.0 MOA and that is very standard for a good small MOA on a quality dot .... the Burris FastFire III runs at a 3.0 MOA as well ... anything lower is to tiny from what I have seen ... even anything up to 5 MOA is good really (but I'm speaking for AR platform so maybe not so much for handguns) but I think about 3 is the sweet spot for handguns.

Most things I have read say to pass on the triangle Delta version of the DP and get the dot ... myself anything other then a dot is kinda pointless I think, but that's just me.

I am really down to deciding only on 2 optics ... the Burris FastFire III vs. the DeltaPoint 2 .... the price difference is what gets to me (150 odd dollars more) ... almost 400 bucks is just plain crazy to me for a basic red-dot, but the FFIII price on Amazon of $228 is SO much easier to swallow and really the only difference I can decipher is the slight slight almost nothing height over the DP is all ... everything else seems pretty even ... so not sure the DP is worth the added quite larger price point.

Anyway that of course is my dilemma at this point but I have time to make my decision.

FYI: Couple threads talking about optics right now ....

A "Red Dot" is a loosely used term to describe a reflex optic sight (easier to say too). The indicator can be a dot or a triangle (or something else) but they typically are both called "dots". The MOA indicates the size of the indicator in "minutes of angle", a MOA is 1" at 100 yards. The smaller indicator is typically more precise due to it's smaller size on the target, this is good for distant small targets where you have a lot of time for each shot, but when you get close in and have to move from target to target quickly, the small dot is slower to "pick up" for the next shot. I use the larger dot (or triangle on the DP) as do most of the USPSA, 3 gun, and Steel Challenge Open pistol shooters. If you're going to standing at a range shooting targets in your lane, then the smaller indicator is probably better, but if you're going to be shooting action pistol, outdoors, at multiple targets while on the move, the larger indicator is (IMO) it faster. (and easier to see in the sun).

That's kind of what I figured. Just wanted some clarification on why you used the larger (triangle). I won't be doing any "fast shooting" so would probably get the smaller 3 MOA for range use. Actually I'm going to wait a while and just get familiar with the gun. I've been in the decision making process for a couple of months. First looked at the 9L and was going to buy that. Then thought might as well spend a bit more money and get the pro. Thought even further and decided for about $30-$40 more might as well get the core. At least then at some point in time I could install the optic sight without any problems. Ordered the 9mm PRO CRO from Buds. Good price but the wait has been a bit frustrating. Took them six days to ship it, then UPS had a delayed truck so it got delayed over a weekend. When finally delivered my FFL had stepped away from his house. Another day missed. Then I filled out the 4473 for the background check and the response was "delayed". That was last Wed. Either they call back & OK it or wait three business days before I can pick it up, which would be tomorrow. I really don't understand why they say delayed. Bought a M&P22 last October, FFL called in the background check. Delayed. Waited three business days & picked it up. In Feb I bought a 1911. FFL called in the background check. Delayed. That time they gave the OK the next day. Now on this one am waiting the three business days again. Geez, I don't have a common name and never been charged with anything in my entire life. All I want to do is some target shooting.

LOL LOL LOL

Glad to know I'm not the only one here that went through that hell

I started actually with the basic M&P9 FS, then thought I want the 5" so I looked into the L, then found out they didn't make that anymore so the Pro it was, THEN thought, dammit I know I'm gonna be mad when I wan to to try and optic, AND then next thing I knew I went from a $550 FS to a $705 CORE!

But for the $155 price hike I get a 5" Long Slide, Better sight radius, Upgraded internal parts for trigger etc. and barrel, Very nice textured back-straps, and of the the kicker a pre-milled slide for an optic if I choose ... and I have decided to try one. Plus is says PRO SERIES C.O.R.E on the side of slide ... Now How Cool Is That!

So very worth the 150 odd bucks IMHO

But it's funny how it started and then how it ended ... always more money of course but better gun with may more options!!!

Let us know when you get it and how you like it bro!

Can you elaborate on the differences in the trigger on the standard M&Ps vs. the Pro Series?

Same for the rifling on the barrel?

Just like Jerry in the videos above, the best handgun shooter alive on earth if you didn't already know, I DID NOT use any aftermarket trigger add-ons. Polished the stock trigger sear to a bit under 3.5 lb pull and it beats any stock, gunsmithed or aftermarket trigger in any poly semi I've ever owned including glock, walther, FN and HK. I can't imagine why anyone would replace such an amazing trigger. Both my MP Core 9s were made and tested in late November of 2013 and have all the newest current parts so I'm not sure if earlier models had worse triggers and ect. or not. I had invested much into my rifle optics this year so no rmr until next month and being I had a few glocks with the rmr in the past I know I have yet to see the full potential of my MP Cores but even with the stock raised sight these are so accurate, light and just overall the best performing poly IMO. The MP Core in 9mm is my new favorite and I'm so happy it's a S&W being I own tons of S&W revolvers. Sold all my glocks kept a few of the top tier polys like the HK P30 and my Walther PPQ but the MP Cores are my go to now.
My main issue to get across here was the trigger of the CORE series at least the ones made in November of 2013 or later need no aftermarket parts, only a simple sear polish. Save your cash for the optic.

This is just a kind of "For What it's Worth". I run Eotech optics on some of my long guns and I really like the 65 MOA circle with the 1 MOA dot; it is really easy to pick up. When I got my 5" C.O.R.E. 9L I started looking at optics for it and I watched shooters that were new to red dots on pistols. Until they developed some "muscle memory" for where to pick up the dot there was a phenomenon that I call "Bobble Heading" that set in as they moved their head and pistol trying to pick up the small dot. I thought that it was too bad no one had the Eotech Circle/dot set-up. Well they do Eotech makes a rather expensive pistol optic and so does JPoint make a Circle/Dot that is like the 65MOA/1MOA that Eotech uses. I just checked, apparently Eotech no longer makes its pistol red dot; I believe that it was a European re-badge anyways.

Long story short...it works so well on my C.O.R.E. I got one for my Canik TP9SFx. Both pistols shoot very well; maybe this Summer I'll figure out if I sell one or keep both.

Point of long story is that the JPoint Center/dot really eliminates most "Bobble Heading", holds zero just fine and is relatively inexpensive, it is also light weight and you can pick up the 1MOA dot VERY fast. Battery life is good and I haven't broken either one... yet! JP Rifles I picked up my first one for $219.00 on sale at DVOR, not available there at present ;-(

End of rant ;-)
