Question Larger magazine for 9mm Shield?

Does anyone know whether a single stack magazine holding more than 8 rounds (12 would be nice) is being developed for the S&W 9mm M&P Shield (which comes stock with a 7 round and an 8 round magazine)?

I bought the 9mm Shield for my wife, thinking she'd like it as purse gun. No luck. She wants more bullets.

Thank you.

So far... No Extended mags. Kinda defeats the whole purpose of a Subcompact SD pistol, doesn't it?
Pearce Grips would probably be the best bet to bug about a +2 grip extension, but that's about it.

I know this is a bit off topic...

If your wife wants 12 rounds, a Compact would be a better option.
The standard magazine for the 9c is 12 rounds.

In my opinion, a larger magazine for the Shield would make it be a less-effective CCW gun.
If you compare the height of a compact (with a pinky extension) & a Shield with the 8-round mag, they are almost identical.
A flat magazine baseplate on the compact is even shorter.

The difference between the length and thickness is very noticeable.

If it's a purse gun, concealment isn't much of a problem with the bigger size of a compact.

My reason for my opinion is this:
The difference between the 2 Shield mags is approx. just under 7/16".

If you were to add the length of four more rounds to the 8-round mag, you'd be adding almost 1 3/4" to the length of the mag, thus adding that amount to the height of the gun.
Again, no big deal for concealment in a purse, but the extra length could cause a problem if it got snagged while she was trying to draw the gun in a defense situation.

All just my opinion, of course.

P.S.
Welcome to the Forum.

Welcome to the forum. I agree that since its a SD gun geared toward concealment, and not your typical range gun, that larger mags probably wont surface. It would be nice to have a few more rounds at the range, but from the practicality standpoint of what the gun is marketed for, not so much.

I think Hillbilly hit this ball out of the stadium-

While I would never tell someone what type of gun to buy or how to use their guns, especially not *Their Wife*, I do believe this is one instance where people on the forum can help by suggesting, offering information and such, etc.

I just bought my Shield yesterday- and I am totally tacticool gear quear who is always preparing for "The War" - i always buy as many magazines for all my guns as possible, always want a full infantryman load if I can lol, etc. But with the Shield, I specifically bought it because my G23 was too big for concealing and also, carrying the loaded, extra mags was too much weight adding to my entire setup (Because I of course carry other things in my pockets plus the G23/Holster etc.)

So I know I am not going to fight a war with 7rd/8rd +1 but it's not for that- it's a CCW gun for light duty CCW/EDC/etc. If I was going out and for some reason, really expected trouble, I would carry my G23 and extra mags. But by enlarge, the Shield is exactly what I want and perfectly what I need-

if you feel it's not (or she for example does,) I believe the absolutely logical thing to do would be to go up to the Compact. I did NOT want the Compact as I wanted something noticeably smaller than the mid-size G23 and I felt that the G26/G27 was not a HUGE difference ... I still may get me a G27 one day for carry but I felt the Shield was perfect in many ways.

So I am thinking to myself, you either talk with her and work with her to accept the Shield, or if not, you want that M&P9C . Maybe let her hold one somewhere, compare them, etc.

But I do know sometimes with women, nothing matters other than what they say they want - logic goes out the window, it's simply Do What I Say Cause I Said It. So perhaps it's a no-win situation lol.

Thanks, guys. Knowing what I know now...not about women, that's still just guesswork...I should have purchased the 12 rnd 9mm Compact instead of the 9mm Shield. It's done now, though, and it will be awhile before I can put more money into another firearm. So it looks like the Shield is mine for now, more or less. That's why I'd like to extend the magazine a bit. The extra size wouldn't bother me and well, I don't carry a purse.

Default just brainstorming here-

Hey i am just wondering- could you not sell the Shield for a small loss and buy the Compact?

It sounds like the Shield is quite new if not brand new, although you can correct me here with the actual condition- but the point being, many people are interested in buying slightly used things when it saves them money.

Now I will full admit *I* am NOT one of those people... I would not buy a used gun for $350-$375 I could buy new for $400 - BUT, I am in the minority, I know people who do this all the time with all sorts of things and relish the opportunity to "take something off someone's hands" while "saving money" etc.

So just wondering , it may not make sense but, if you can get a good deal on a new Compact, and sell the Shield for a good price, maybe it's not as tough as it seems. But certainly, if YOU keep the Shield, I imagine you'll be pretty happy you did!!

this is actually a good idea before i bought my shield i was considering a used one but their are hardly any on the secondary market.. i used armslist and floridaguntrader to check out the listings and there were a boat load of XDs but for a months worth of looking only 2 shields and they were selling for 345 to 375 depending on accessories that went with them... and they sold within days of the listings.. i opted for a new shield w/o the safety as i got a steal on the new one because i didnt wont the safety.. just my preferance...

I'd post on Armslist and see if you could trade it. A co-worker of mine traded her M&P 9c for a Shield. Someone had the Shield and was looking for something slightly larger, and she had the Compact and was looking for something slightly smaller.

I have a 40c for trade if interested. Not sure if the wife would like the 40cal. I know mine doesn't. But just thought I'd offer. I bought the 40c but love how much easier the shield 40 conceals, so I had to buy one. Good luck!

I currently carry the 7 rounder with the 6 rounder in a pouch on my right hip. (on a .40 Shield)

I've debated about longer magazine options for a while as well, and the only real use I could think of for one (as a male) is just to mess around on the range without having to reload as often (think G26 with the 33 round mag).

I really wouldn't mind a 10-round option for my .40, but I think I can live without it if I pouched 2 more 6's or just carry 1 of the 7's with 2 more pouched.

The nice thing about the wifey-purse gun idea is probably what you're visualizing : Carry the Shield with the standard mag, keep a long-stick in the purse for prolonged exchanges - but how often do you think that situation would ever go down that just pouching another 6-7 or 8 rounder wouldn't be able to handle?

Larger magazine for 9mm Shield?-2015-05-06-20-33-27-jpg
How much longer it would be with a 12rds aftermarket mag... needless to say it would be way to long for cc...and the 9c would work better in this capacity

I know this is an old thread, and the OP hasn't been back, but there is a way to increase the magazine capacity by one round in either the 7 or 8 round mag. I bought one of these kits and it seems high quality and it works. MagGuts | The Last Round's On Us!

I know the Promag mags don't gt any love around here, but I've been using one with my Shield 9mm for months now with zero issues at all (so far)
10 rounds is nice to have with this thing, I use it at the range all the time and I have a horizontal mag pouch that I use to carry it as a spare. I carry my shield with the 7 round mag IWB (it's just easier to conceal) so I get 7+1 + 10 if I need it. I also have 4 8 round mags and pouches for them so I could go 7+1 and 32 if I really felt the need LOL!

I have a ProMag 10 round magazine for my Shield and love it for the range and backup mag. Never had a problem with it.

I bought the Pro-Mag 10 round magazines. No issues. Have put around 600 rounds thru them. Just my 2 cents.

No problem with small mags as I only load 3 or 5 rounds at a time at the range. For SD I carry the 7 in the gun +1 and the 8 on my belt. I probably be dead before I shoot that many.

Seems like OP's wife lacks confidence in her ability to hit a BG reliably.

A larger firearm could well help with this since they are easier to shoot well, not because of more rounds.

Lots of available rounds don't help if you can't hit the target.

I can't remember any reported incident where a sd shooting involved more than 1, 2 or 3 shots hitting the BG.

If 7 rounds won't do the job in a true (not vampire-zombie fantasy) sd situation, OP's wife needs more confidence and, most likely, better training to gain that confidence.

Default Promag

I hate to be one to recommend a Promag as I've had a few that wound up in the trash can, but I've put about 75 to 100 rounds thru my Promag 10 round mag (AE 147 grain, S&B and Winchester Train & Defend 147gr mostly) with zero failures. It may be too long for you to conceal but for range use it seems to work fine.

At $17 it was cheap enough to take a chance, glad I did. I still prefer the feel of the 7 & 8 round factory mags with the Pearce extensions better than the tapered bottom of the Promag but it works. I like it enough to grab a few more for range/practice mags.

The Promag base plate is different from the factory mags, it has two round pins holding it in place instead of the single rectangular latch. So Pearce extension won't fit without mods.
