As I recently passed 56, my need for mild reading glasses caused me to re-think the sights I use on carry guns. I found I shoot best with something on the front sight, and a wider notch rear sight.

Working with my good friend Wayne Novak and the great guys at his shop, we came up with what I think is the perfect solution:

- the Megadot front sight (.140" wide, big white dot with Trijicon insert)
- superwide (.156) plain black rear sight.

Highly recommended ! Just got my slide back, and it is just what the doctor ordered. Give Novak's a call.

I hear it's no easy task to replace the sights on a Shield.

It's not ! I have an MGW sight pusher for the Shield, and still couldn't move the rear sight.

So off to Novak's to both supply and install the sights, which was worth it. They also installed a roll pin in the front sight, and replaced the factory firing pin plunger and spring with Apex parts.

The easiest solution is to ship your slide to Novak's. Their turnaround is fantastic.

I found Big Dots worked well with my eyes on my Shield - I can shoot them well with my bifocals, with reading glasses or even without glasses at all.

I run those sights on my 9mm Shield and Glock Gen4 G26. Great sight picture in any light.

Bought and had my Shield's TFO sights installed by HD-H2000 in Clay, AL. Click HERE for their website. Fast turn around, reasonable prices, FREE install if you buy your sight from them and superb work.

As an aside, I tried to remove the rear sight to install an Apex USB and with different sight pushers and could NOT get it to budge. Included the USB in my shipment and they installed it when replacing my OEM sights.

Ops mgr - the front was the one on my shield that gave me fits. I managed to punch it out after about 20 minutes. The TFO's took a bit of fitting too.

Do your self a real favor and pick up Viridian for your Shield. I am your age and recently purchased one and all I can report is nothing less than fantastic. The instant on and stroke feature are amazing.

I have a set of XS Big Dots on my G33, and they serve the purpose of that gun pretty well. One CAN shoot pretty precisely with them, but it takes more work to develop that skill.

The "old guy sights" (I want to say Chuck Rogers came up with that term, but don't quote me on that) are what I had on my duty 1911 and my Wilson KZ9. The XS standard size tritium dot worked well with the .156" rear (a 10-8 rear on the 1911, a Wilson Boot sight on the KZ9). They work pretty well for me.

I recall reading on the 1911 forum some years back of a guy who went with a big dot, and to get a decent picture he had something like a .300" rear. I'm not curious enough to take that path.

As I too have the same issue of not being as young as I once was. I have a S&W Shield .40 that I am going to put new sights on and was wondering which ones work the best for night time. I am also planning on putting a green laser on it, however the sights will work with it instead of just using the laser. Any ideas?

All of those are good sights, I choose Dawson Precision for my guns.
